Morbius has been torn to shreds by critics, and while its opening weekend wasn't too bad (all things considered), the movie is expected to see a steep drop-off once Sonic The Hedgehog 2 races in to steal the #1 spot.
Unless Morbius somehow manages to sink its fangs in for a decent hold on the box office, The Living Vampire's solo franchise may be dead before it even gets going. This hasn't seemed to deter director Daniel Espinosa, however, who expressed his excitement about Sony Pictures' future plans during an interview with Total Film.
"I think that the future is very exciting, and I think that the plans that Sony has in very closed rooms, that I’m not really allowed to attend, or the small snippets I’ve heard, fills me with joy. But if I said anything, they would shoot me on the spot.”
The studio currently has Kraven the Hunter, Madame Web and Spider-Woman in development, and we're sure there are others we haven't heard about. Morbius' laughable post-credit scenes hinted at a build towards some kind of Sinister Six event, but Sony's plans might well extend even further.
Keep in mind that both Venom movies cleaned up at the box office despite negative reviews, and we don't need to remind you how well No Way Home is still performing. Even if Morbius tanks hard, the studio will probably be content to take the loss and forge ahead, possibly utilizing Jared Leto's antihero sparingly and only in other characters' films until the big team-up.
As for Espinosa, he's clearly a big comic book fan, and it's hard to escape the feeling that the studio did a major hatchet job on his movie. We may learn more about what went down at some point, but for now, the filmmaker remains enthusiastic about the future.
“I remember when I was 12 years old, I read a comic book called Secret Wars, and it was when they took all the superheroes to a planet and all the super bad guys to a planet, and they had to fight each other. In Marvel, it always has existed, this great fascination of creating groups, and new friendships that can oppose other friendships. And I think that all us Marvel fans would die to see the Sony-verse people together.”
Yeah... not so sure about that last part!
