MORBIUS Star Matt Smith ISN'T Playing Loxias Crown And Is Instead A Newly Created Character Called "Milo"

When Doctor Who alum Matt Smith was cast in Morbius, it was reported that he'd be playing Loxias Crown. Better known as Hunger in the comic books, he too is a "Living Vampire," and one of the anti-hero's greatest foes. However, production notes for the movie reveal that Smith is actually playing what appears to be a newly created character called Milo.

Apparently, "Milo" is a lifelong friend of Dr. Michael Morbius and is described as "the scion of a very, very, very rich family" who has "grown into a man determined to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life while he can - mostly by spending his money to live the high life in New York."

After Morbius is cursed with vampirism, his "natural reaction is to shield his dying friend - a reaction Milo does not understand or appreciate. Milo steals the serum, transforming himself into the same monster that Morbius is." The two men suffer from the same medical affliction, and upon being cured, "Morbius is afraid of his powers" whereas "Milo embraces them."

It seems Milo is going to be an amalgam of Loxias Crown and Emil Nikos, as the latter was Morbius' childhood friend and his first victim following his transformation into a Living Vampire. Later, Emil was also turned into a vampire, albeit by Baron Blood.

Smith explains, "They both get the same power - one goes one way, and one goes the other way. The lust for more blood, for more feeling, more power - Milo doesn't shy away from it. The idea that Michael is trying to deny his instincts as this creature is just beguiling to Milo. Why? 'We've spent all our lives hobbling around, feeling second-best. And suddenly we feel like gods. And you're gonna throw it away because that's the good thing to do?'"

We're certainly intrigued to see how this dynamic plays out in Morbius, and it's great to finally get some insight into what Smith's villain will bring to the table here. It is a little surprising that we're getting "Milo" instead of Loxias Crown or Emil Nikos, but there may still be more surprises to come.

Morbius is set to be released exclusively in theaters on April 1.

Does anyone still give a sh!t?! I wish they'd just release this movie already on VOD so I can go ahead and pirate it.

@UnderBelly - They really should have dropped the movie directly to Netflix once they worked out that deal with Sony earlier in 2020.
No reason to delay a movie nobody really wanted to see in the first place so often.

@Blergh - They should have! though I'm sure they don't want to renegotiate Leto's deal.

Also Sony has been sticking to their theatrical releases and not going streaming, to some financial success. Venom 2, proved as much. And they were determined to stick with December for NWH, and that's still raking it in. They can probably afford to release a dud, and then sell it off quick after to still better their expected gross and VOD proceeds.

Honestly, with the number of times this movie has been delayed by the studio, and reshoots it’s undergone, it wouldn’t surprise me if Smith originally played Loxias, but they completely changed the character name in reshoots and with ADR. Isn’t that what they did with Jessica Chastain’s character in Dark Phoenix?

@santoanderson - I mean, Chastain in dark Phoenix was changed because the disney deal was being worked on and they didn't want to have the movie act as competition for captain marvel while that was going on. I think that was by request even.

Really don't know why they'd just change the name of the character if everything else stays the same. No way is Sony giving up rights to any of the characters they own, and I doubt Loxias is intended for an upcoming Spiderman movie. Those are the only reasons I can see for them changing the name with reshoots.

@santoanderson - Yeah from Skrull Queen to the random D'Bari alien that the phoenix force consumed in one frame of Dark Phoenix Saga comic. I mean, lore wise it's more accurate than Skrull Queen but she really should have been a villain with more gravitas like Cassandra Nova. With all the Hellfire Club concept at that we got I'll give Kinberg the benefit of the doubt that he was trying to be more faithful to the source material but the Fox deal/Marvel made him condense it all into one movie and change stuff up.

@Juggernaut2021 - I mean isn’t that just comics? Even most Batman villains are just one aspect of his character flipped.

Joker-Morality
Two-Face- Duality
Scarecrow- Use of fear
Babe- Physicality
Etc

That’s what superhero antagonists have basically always been lol

@Ha1frican -
No. Those characters may exhibit shared inherent psychological traits but are not funhouse mirror copies of the original like those I mentioned.
Big difference between the same chess pool producing heroes and nemesis and the villain ripping off the hero to be its counter.
It has and can work but it is just overly done and tired.

Matt Smith or Robert Sheehan from 'Misfits' would be my casting choice for a new incarnation of The Joker.

@TheManWithoutFear - after "Terminator: Genisys", "Charlie Says" and this one would think so.
But then again he did land the lead in the Game of Thrones prequel series and was part of "Last Night in Soho", so the jury's still out on that one
