Now that Suicide Squad star Jared Leto has signed up to play the titular character in Morbius the Living Vampire, Sony Pictures is hard at work putting the movie together. As that continues, news on the female lead has been revealed and it turns out that speculation it will be Martine Bancroft was right.

Introduced in the pages of 1971's The Amazing Spider-Man #102, she has a long history which saw her start as Michael Morbius' fiancee before becoming one of his victims and a vampire in her own right. She's then served as both an enemy and ally to her old flame and her involvement could very well shed some light on the other characters who will ultimately be part of this horror-based superhero movie.

Directed by Daniel Espinosa, Morbius is expected to start shooting this November, It doesn't have a release date and many believe that could be because Sony is waiting to see how Venom performs.

If this looks anything like Venom, I'm going to be writing off this entire attempt at a universe.

Sony is going to kill all of the Spidey universe.

People love vampires and Jared Leto is a big name.

I'm not interested but I wouldn't be surprised if this was a sleeper hit.

@DCFilmJunkie - outside of the Twilight franchise Vampire movies don’t make a lot, the budget for this needs to be under 100 million.

Man, I already compared Venom to the 2006 Ghost Rider movie but then it really just hit me how much Riz Ahmed character reminds me of Blackheart from that film

Who wants to bet against me that this crap gets cancelled by the time Venom is finished playing in theaters, likely getting panned by critics for the god awful screenplay and a #14 role of tom hardy mumbling about something - playing an autistic 10 year old with slight downs syndrome

@BlindWedjat - A bit too familiar though, isn't it? Or is it just a coincidence you suggested Margot Robbie opposite Jared Leto?

Out of all of Sony's Spideyless spin offs, this is the one I think might work out really well. Morbius, while mainly a foe of Spider-Man, is an actual interesting character on his own, he doesn't need Spider-Man necessarily to function. He isn't defined by his relationship to Peter Parker the same way Silver Sable, Black Cat or Venom are. If we didn't know that Morbius was from the Marvel Universe, his story would still work and is somewhat unique all on it's own. He also isn't exactly a character most people would be excited about seeing as the villain in one of Spidey's movies. Like they have still never shown Mysterio, Kraven the Hunter, Chameleon, Mr Negative, Morlun, Jackal, Scorpion, a real Rhino, Tombstone, a good Electro, a good Venom, or even Karnage. I would probably want to see a movie with those guys a lot more then Morbius especially because of how much of a horror element Morbius is and Spider-Man is never going in the horror direction.

@JustAChillFan - I agree. Morbius is a tragic anti-hero, one that -- if done correctly -- audiences should feel sympathy for. There is a lot of hate on Sony for Venom right now, and to be sure they earned it with the garbage that was the second Garfield film, but looking back, the first 2 Raimi films were excellent, the 3rd Raimi film was OK as was the first Garfield film. Being a life-long Spidey fan, I was very unimpressed with Homecoming and the villains they stuffed into that film. To hire actors like Hardy and Leto to play the role of villains/anti-heroes in a lead role shows commitment. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing hopefully original films/scripts instead of the fun yet formulaic Marvel Studios films we always get.

@GeneralZod - I mean I agree with you except for the whole Homecoming being unimpressive and Marvel always being formulaic. Out of every CBM that has come out in the last 3 years the most formulaic have been Justice League and Apocalypse, two non Marvel Studios Films. If anything they have been the most against formula with Infinity War, Guardians 2 and Ragnarok.

@JustAChillFan - I was a big fan of Morbius when he first hit the scene. Great anti-hero with some depth. I love the origin and handled correctly, which I am not confident of, it could be really good.

@Goldboink - I agree, however, the characters I want him to interact with the most, Sony no longer owns.
