Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige Talks Protecting SPOILERS After SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME Leaks

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness features heaps of big surprises, and Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has now addressed the impact of spoilers in the wake of Spider-Man: No Way Home leaks.

Marvel Studios has always been very good at protecting spoilers, but, inevitably, leaks do happen. Even going back as far as The Avengers, our first look at the team assembled came in the form of promo art, while rumours and Reddit leaks continue to reveal key plot points far sooner than anticipated.

In the case of Spider-Man: No Way Home, there were some major leaks before the threequel arrived in theaters, including a couple of stills showing Charlie Cox's return as Matt Murdock and the three Spider-Men standing side-by-side; needless to say, they were significant spoilers for the movie.

We were on hand for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness' global press conference earlier this week. During the event, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige was asked about how big of a challenge it's been to keep all the MCU's biggest secrets under wraps. "Well, the unfortunate truth is, you don't [Laughs]," he admitted. "Therefore, you need to make sure that the experience itself works regardless of what has been spoiled or not."

"We still do as good a job as we can, and I think a lot of people are getting good at not spreading it," Feige continued. "You know, [if] somebody steals something, don't spread it around because it just potentially lessens the experience. But, in a lot of ways, No Way Home showed that it did not lessen the experience, so we will continue to do the best that we can, but the most important thing is, to deliver a movie or show that delivers regardless of what you know going in."

It was interesting to hear these comments from Feige, especially as footage from the Doctor Strange sequel had leaked online just hours before the press conference took place. While some eager fans are keen to see a movie or TV show's biggest surprises as soon as possible, that inevitably leads to many having the experience Feige refers to spoiled for them against their will.

To counter this, Marvel Studios has disabled comments across its social media channels, and that feels like a smart first step to ensure fans can enjoy this blockbuster to the fullest on the big screen.

"Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is a one of a kind blockbuster experience and a pure, unadulterated Sam Raimi movie that, while not quite the crazy ride through the Multiverse we expected, delivers a fun, horror-tinged trip," we said in our review of the blockbuster this week.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is now playing in theaters!

I guess I avoided spoilers pretty well, I was not ready for the movie I got. In a good way, I liked it

@TheWalkingCuban - it was pretty good. I wish I wouldn't of spoiled myself. It's not like the movie took too long to let us know who the villain was. It happened pretty fast

He seemed pretty perturbed talking about this. I'm going to try to take a step back from spoiler culture and go into some of these movies blind because the more we're spoiled the more spoiled we've become.

This constant need for information feels like it's overshadowing the movies themselves whereas I watch these movies and immediately start thinking "what other information out there on the next one". It's just getting old and exhausting

@MyCoolYoung - I used to be part of marvelstudiosspoilers on reddit and hunt out every leak. This was pre infinity war days. But then so much of endgame got spoiled for me that it actually detracted from the experience.

I can only imagine the goosebumps the cap mjornir reveal and "avengers assemble" line would have given me. But I ruined it for myself [by reading a rogue comment on cbm actually].

Changed my entire perspective ever since

@arrowz - lol preciate it but so serious. We just got an illuminati and people were just like that's it? I just dont understand

@MyCoolYoung - I definitely avoided watching the final trailer for Dr. Strange: MoM, and I think even then I had most of the plot spoiled, the only thing that surprised me in the film were 3 cameos.

@Vigor - same here. I recently got into leaks and reddit maybe around endgame. I learned how to get spoilers from here and I regret it mow

He's been a hypocritical a-hole honestly. No Way Home did a lot more to prevent spoilers while Kevin relied on them to sell a bait and switch movie about Wanda getting beaten by America Chavez.

Yes I did. Saw only the teaser trailer and the first trailer. That's it. Went in blind to see DS2 and boy was I shocked🥲

As for the film, it's a solid 8 out of 10 for me. The villain is scary AF. Wanda is an MVP. Her motivation was great and heartbreaking.

Strange has more character development.

America is so good in this film and her story is pretty sweet.

Sam's directing really made this film. It's spooky as hell and the pacing is just too notch. 2 hours for this film was perfect.

Gonna see it again atleast 2 more times. 3D next💪❤️🔥

@AmazingFILMporg - I got to the theater thinking I was just seeing imax and to my surprise it was IMAX 3d. It was my first 3d movie since amazing Spider-Man 2. I've never been a big 3d fan but this turned out to be a pleasant surprise.

It was really cool to see there was a through line between all the Strange's.

I feel like a lot of people got wrapped up in Wanda's quest and didn't pay enough attention to Strange's because his was quite good.

Definitely agree with everything you said. I was shocked with how much horror was in this and the brutal deaths

I feel like with the gross amount of trailers they have been putting out for Dr. Strange, they are spoiling the movie themselves. Just cutting down on this would make me happy. I've tried to condition myself to stay away from any and all spoilers on the net because I actually do like to go into a film and be completely surprised in what I see.

I think they are making up for far from home

That was a Sony film and kept spoilers very quiet.

I think Disney is of the mind that the more they spoil the more people will come and see what more does the film have up it's sleeve 🙂

I think at this point the extent of spoiler prevention really should just be left to NDAs and a not revealing marketing campaign. It's clear with no way home spoilers don't hurt the experience, so why bother with the secrecy, such as giving actors partial scripts and lying to the people working on the film what the scene actually involves.

If anything, I'd say this proves revealing spoilers can actually make a movie more liked and successful.

@Origame -
If people knew going into MoM that
- Fan favorite characters would be depicted as incompetent and killed off
- Only explored three incredibly generic basic multiverse locations
- It was not Marvel Zombies but Doctor Strange possessing a decaying body
- America Chavez saves the day
- Wanda's motivations are retconned and the entire plot of WandaVision ignored or misinterpeted
- Vision never shows up

I think the viewership would have been lower. Spoilers are only good if they present the film in a positive light, not a negative light.

@Scarilian - well, at that point it's like just make good film making choices then.

@AmazingFILMporg - I wish, but I think Chris Columbus is semi-retired from directing.

@AmazingFILMporg -
I think introducing and killing off Mr.Fantastic made Jon Watts quit the project. It's incredibly difficult to get an audience to care about a character they just witnessed being killed off in a previous film. It's pretty much damaged the investment people will have in MCU's Fantastic Four.

Either way, Fantastic Four is not going to be out until 2024 at the earliest given the delays and shuffles of films it probably won't start filming until early 2023 so I would not expect casting until perhaps September/October.

What about not spoiling the movies yourselves, Kevin?

Anyway, these two movies probably got spoiled because of the pandemic, with the VFX team working from home, so of course it leaked.
It wont happen again.
