Spider-Man: No Way Home looks set to web up a healthy $48 million during its third weekend at the North American box office according to Sony Pictures, though industry experts (via Deadline) are anticipating closer to $50 million - $60 million. Either way, the threequel will pass $600 million by the end of today, with an estimated final haul of $608.58 million.
With that, Spider-Man: No Way Home will top Incredibles 2 to become the 10th highest-grossing movie of all-time at the domestic box office, a truly spectacular feat in this "pandemic era."
Just like the past couple of weeks, things aren't looking quite so good for The Matrix Resurrections. Love or hate Lana Wachowski's return to that beloved franchise, the movie plummeted another 72% during its second weekend (which can partly be blamed on its availability on HBO Max).
Falling to fifth place in the top 10, it will earn only $3.4 million this weekend. Spider-Man: No Way Home has crushed this latest Matrix movie, but a tepid reception from fans and critics alike has ensured that Resurrections is dead on arrival. Short of it being a massive hit on streaming - which doesn't appear to be the case - we're betting that there won't be a fifth instalment after this latest effort.
It's been an interesting few weeks at the box office, and as we head into 2022, it remains to be seen whether any other movies can find a similar level of success as No Way Home. It's been credited with saving the theatrical experience, and if moviegoers are excited enough by a new title, they're clearly still willing to see it on the big screen. We're betting The Batman will be 2022's first mega hit...
