Sandman Actor Thomas Haden Church Has "Heard Rumors" Sam Raimi And Tobey Maguire Will Reteam For SPIDER-MAN 4

After returning as Sandman in Spider-Man: No Way Home, Thomas Haden Church has claimed he's "heard rumours" that Sam Raimi is set to reunite with Tobey Maguire for the long-awaited Spider-Man 3 sequel...

Thomas Haden Church first played Sandman in Spider-Man 3, a movie which ended up being Sam Raimi's final Marvel blockbuster until Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness rolled around.

Unbelievably, the sequel featured only a single mention of the web-slinger and rumours Tobey Maguire would show up as Peter Parker proved to be incorrect.

That was a shame so soon after his return in Spider-Man: No Way Home, and it was there Church was given the opportunity to play Flint Marko again. Now, the actor has told ComicBook.com he's heard rumblings Spider-Man 4 is happening with Raimi and Maguire set to reunite.

"There's always been some kind of...I've heard rumors...that Sam Raimi was going to do another [Spider-Man movie] with Tobey [Maguire]," he states. "[If] that happens, I would probably campaign to maybe at least do a cameo."

It's unclear whether these are rumours Church has read online or rumblings he's heard in Hollywood after playing Sandman for Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios back in 2021. It's worth noting the actor has previously hinted he could make another return as this sinister baddie down the line.

As for Raimi, he didn't shut down the possibility of making Spider-Man 4 when he was quizzed about the unmade last year.

"I love Tobey. I love Kirsten Dunst. I think all things are possible," the filmmaker said while promoting the Doctor Strange sequel. "I don't really have a story or a plan. I don't know if Marvel would be interested in that right now. I don't know what their thoughts are about that. I haven't really pursued that. But it sounds beautiful. Even if it wasn't a Spider-Man movie, I'd love to work with Tobey again, in a different role."

Ultimately, it will be down to Sony whether Spider-Man 4 becomes a reality. However, the likes of No Way Home and Across the Spider-Verse have made it clear there's more than one Variant of the heroes we know and love fighting the good fight out there.

With that in mind, moviegoers would surely be accepting of both Spider-Man 4 and Marvel Studios' No Way Home sequel swinging into theaters in close proximity.

As always, we'll have to wait and see what happens but it's probably best not to get too excited just yet.

Whatever life holds in store for me, I will never forget these words: With great power comes great responsibility. This is my gift, my curse. Who am I? I'm Spider-Man.

I would love it. But the studio synergy with Raimis style of directing just isn’t there. That was evident with MoM

If he does direct SM4, it’s going to have to jump forward a year or two, due to his Goblin injury in NWH. As far as a villain, it has to be something supernatural and scary, because that’s Sam Raimi’s forte. Mix that with him being a father and his kid having some of his abilities, would make for an amusing movie.

@Timerider - no, Tobey Maguire lives in a universe where The Green Goblin died. So, nothing from NO WAY HOME needs to be acknowledged.

@CFL - If anything a quick reference, but nothing that would actually impact the story Raimi wants to tell.

@CFL - Sorry it's been a while since I've seen this movie but The Green Goblin died, was this Harry or Norman Osborn that died?

The story would need to be completely revamped from the original 4’s story.

But Holland’s Spider-Man is in a perfect place so I’d rather just see him continue.

One idea they could do is if Sony wanted to to Spider-Man 4 and Amazing Spider-Man 3…

Combine them!

Have the beginning of the film show both Peters didn’t get returned to their universes at the end of NWH and they both wind up in other universe and they have to survive and find a way back to theirs.

Boom we get more Garfield and more y Tobey and at the end Tobey could reunite with MJ and we get to see that ending (maybe he has a kid too).

Just an idea.

@Vigor -

Thanks!

I could see Tobey and Garfield having great chemistry like they did in NWH. Like and older brother/ younger brother thing going on.

Him and Kirsten deserve to come back with Mayday Parker as their daughter. It’d be a missed opportunity if they dont

If they did do a 4th film would want it to take inspiration from Spiderman Renew Your Vows

Have Peter and MJ get be married, give them a young daughter who is developing spider powers

Could stick with the original idea of the using Vulture and black car

Although another option and more obscure choice would be Silver Main and Silver Sable

It would make sense to both finish the Tobey movies AND finish the Andrew movies... and then continue on with Holland (and possibly other cameos) when that is done.

Don't go full DC.

DC gave us a brand new Batman in 2022. Did that have an effect on the old universe when they suddenly released a bunch of films like Black Adam, Shazam 2, The Flash and Aquaman 2?

No, of course not. The general audience cares so much about superheroes that they will commit to multiple big screen live-action versions of them at the same time. Pffft.

@ObserverIO - Yeah, I was kinda thinking the same thing when I read this article. For as much as I would like to see a "SM 4" movie with Peter in the life that he was in when he got plucked from his universe (presumably married to MJ with a daughter) and an "ASM 3" would be fine (but not my first choice), I don't want to see them go down the DC route with multiple versions of the same character running around in their own universes concurrently, and I think that that would confuse the GA. I mean just look at the potential mess that Gunn could have on his hands with the DCU with the returning/not the same but the same characters and at least 2 different versions of Batman simultaneously and I just don't want to see that happen with Spidey. Sure there are the "Spider-verse" movies, but I think that those are so different from the MCU (especially being animated) that it's easy to tell that they are their own thing (for the most part).

But Sony gonna Sony, so whatcha gonna do?
