We recently caught up with Joel McHale to discuss his role as Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms, but we're sure many of you will know him best for his time working on Community.
That series was where Joe and Anthony Russo got their starts, and they've since enlisted a number of cast members for cameos in their Marvel Cinematic Universe projects. McHale (who remains close friends with the filmmakers based on recent social media posts) hasn't been among them, so we were quick to ask whether he's still waiting for that call to appear in a Marvel Studios movie.
"Yeah, what the hell, Russo Brothers?" he exclaimed. "I have already come up with my own superhero. His name is Gangly Gary and Gary is...you know, he’s a badass, he has a lot of superpowers, and can use his gangliness to fight people. I’m waiting, Russos. Yeah, come on guys. Step up! I was in Spider-Man 2 with a very small part, but that was pre-Marvel Studios. That was a long time ago."
Talking of Spider-Man 2, Tobey Maguire is, of course, rumoured to be returning to the role of Peter Parker in Spider-Man: No Way Home. We put it to Joel (jokingly) that the threequel would be the perfect place to bring back the bank manager who turned Aunt May down for that loan - and toaster - way back when.
"Oh yeah, it’s about my character. The whole movie is," he laughed. "A lot of people are talking about it like, ‘Is Mr. Jacks the Bank Manager going to reprise his role?’ Absolutely! Hold on to your hat. It is big time, guys. I’m all over the trailer."
Only time will tell whether Joel does get the opportunity to reteam with the Russos in the MCU, but he's getting a fix of that superhero world in the second season of Stargirl as Starman!
