The sequel to Spider-Man has earned a record-breaking $180 million in just six days of release and another $43 million overseas. Director Sam Raimi has already begun writing Spider-Man 3 and is "flabbergasted" by the film's record-breaking success at the box office, according to the Irish Examiner.

"The box office is just a surprise," Raimi said, adding that he and brother Ted are working on the third film.

"We were working on it at the hotel last night and this morning," he said. "But I don't know what is going to happen yet."

The previous record was held by The Matrix Reloaded which grossed $146.9 million in the same amount of time last year.
