SPIDER-MAN 3 Star Thomas Haden Church Teases A Secret Role In An Upcoming Superhero Movie

Thomas Haden Church is best known to superhero fans for playing the villainous Sandman in Spider-Man 3 but the actor has now revealed that he's landed another comic book movie role. Which one, though?

Thomas Haden Church is no stranger to the world of superheroes after starring in Spider-Man 3 but it sounds like we can expect to see the actor return to the genre in the very near future. Confirming that he's filmed a role in a project he's "not supposed to talk about," all Church would say is that it's not Marvel related! The question is, what could it be and when exactly will we see him show up on screen?

"I’m not supposed to talk about it," he teased, "but I actually have returned, but not in the Marvel world, it’s another world, but it is in that genre of superheroes and supervillains. I’m not supposed to talk about it, it’s a movie I shot last year. They’re trying to keep it — and good luck to ’em — with,
y’know, today man, I’m surprised it hasn’t already kinda been revealed." It sounds like a pretty big deal and it's unclear whether Chruch is simply referring to the MCU when he says "the Marvel world."

Aquaman is one very likely possibility as that was shooting last year but so was the Hellboy reboot. If Church is only referring to the MCU, then he could pop up in Deadpool 2, X-Men: Dark Phoenix, or Venom (let's face it, bringing him back as Sandman is the sort of thing Avi Arad would probably do).

Where do you think Church will pop up? As always, let us know your thoughts in the usual place.

@IctyoSapien - Well I highly doubt it seeing as he was Lobster Johnson in the already released Hellboy reboot & that movie tanked at box office. Thanks again for yet another case of over involved executives f$@king up that franchise’s chance for success.

I don't dislike Spider-Man 3 much, a lot of it thanks to him. Sandman was a great villain for him to play, and I hope he gets a substantial role in wherever he pops up next

@AbidNaga - yeah it kind of bugs me how people act like it's SUCH a terrible movie. I mean it's certainly not great, but it's definitely not the monstrosity everybody acts like it is. There's a handful of great things about the movie, Thomas Haden Church's acting is one example.

If avi arad didn't shoehorn in the dumb venom plot into the film it couldve been awesome. Sandman was definitely not the problem with spider-man 3

@SupermansTrunks - Completely agree. Sandman could've carried that movie BG himself.

@SupermansTrunks - Really the only problem with Sandman was that they tied him to Uncle Ben's death.

@Philip - I didn’t mind Sandman killing Uncle Ben solely because it tied to the themes of revenge & forgiveness.

Plus one of my favorite Batman stories is Night of the Chill where Batman confronts Joe Chill & Spider-Man 3 did a Spidey version of that.

It says a lot about Spider-Man’s character that despite Sandman killing his Uncle, Spider-Man forgives him which fits Peter’s character.

I love the end monologue with Peter & Sandman

@LEVITIKUZ - It was a LONG time ago, but in an old issue of Marvel-Two-in-One, Sandman is developed as a very sympathetic character while downing a few beers with The Thing. It was a stand-out issue in that series.

@LEVITIKUZ - I just realized the similarity in the conversations between Peter and Marcus in Spidey 3 to T'Challa and Zemo in Civil War. Both basically forgave their father(-figure)'s murderers.

@LEVITIKUZ - Oh, don't get me wrong, I like that end monologue too.

But having Flint being Ben's killer felt like an incredibly lazy way of tying him to Peter imo.

It doesn't ruin the film - but that's my only issue with SM3 Sandman.

@Ragnarocknroll - I never saw BP forgiving Zemo. I saw BP learning to abandon his quest for vengeance & wanting justice for his father’s death

@LEVITIKUZ - I mean, in a way, it is a sort of forgiveness. Or maybe you're right, forgiveness probably means you harbor no illwill to the other person and perhaps BP still hates Zemo but won't kill him, which like you said, would mean he's been consumed by his vengeance.

@Philip - Really the only problem was Peter’s dancing.

Sounds like its a Kick-Ass or Super type movie that deals with superheroes but isn't based on anything from the Big 2.

Off-Topic:

Bob Iger loses Ryan Murphy to Netflix. However, it is a little encouraging that Disney and the Mouse even attempted to keep secure Murphy in the first place.

Maybe he's reprising his role as the Strobe, for a sequel to "The Specials."
