De-bugging the Spider-Man Franchise- Why we don't need a 'Reboot'

After the Sony hack the future of the Spider-Man franchise seems more up in the air than ever. I give my opinion on where I see the future of the franchise and the direction I think the narrative should take

Editorial Opinion

Filed Under: The Amazing Spider-Man

First I think it is important to say that I don’t hate any of the Spider-Man films. Spider-Man 2 is probably the best and Spider-Man 3 is by far the worst. In that we see what makes a great Spider-Man movie- a focus on Peter Parker that explores his personal life, his feelings, psychological state and really finds that heart of the character. Of course this should be underpinned with great Spider-Man action and SFX.
The Amazing Spider-Man films have got some of this right in that there is a large Peter focus and I think a lot of that is down to the casting of Andrew Garfield; for me has everything from the characterisation to the look of Pete/ Spidey, so to lose him would be a huge shame.
Where to go with the next few films then?
Sony e-mails have reportedly compared the Spider-Man franchise to James Bond, saying that it is pointless re-treading old ground but that it is important to take Spider-Man in a new direction. They are looking at Kraven’s last hunt which would be cool and implies they want a darker edge to the series. Baring all that in mind here is my alternative for a future trilogy of films that fixes duh duh duh the symbiote saga:

Web of Lies

In this film we see a broken Peter Parker (Garfield or no) that, despite trying to battle on as Spider-man, has fallen into a dark place. He is mourning the death of Gwen and through montage we see his Spider-suit slowly destroyed through battle and neglect until he finally throws the tattered remains of the mask into a bin and collapses on a bed in his small apartment.

We see Pete bump into the girl-(in-the-flat-)next-door Mary Jane Watson- a young lady embarking on a modelling career (I always picture Bella Thorne), on the way out of his apartment. She asks him if he wants to grab a cup of coffee but Pete freaks out over the idea of dating again.

MJ- Easy Tiger, I meant as friends- you know the whole neighbourly thing.

Pete- I had a friend, it didn’t work out so great.

At Aunt May’s house he comes across a video of himself playing with a young Eddie Brock and decides to look him up (a la Ultimate Spider-Man ‘Venom’). Brock reveals ‘the suit’ their parents were working on together for a company called Roxxon and that his parents died under similarly suspicious circumstances. Pete secretly steals part of the suit and is motivated by its adrenaline rush to return to his vigilante ways as a more brutal Black Spider-Man, whilst taking an internship at Roxxon to explore how they were involved in his parents’ deaths.

This prompts the city to commission Roxxon (Under Mayor JJJJr’s watchful eye) to create the Scorpion to apprehend Spidey.

After an initial battle Scorpion goes a bit crazy from the pain the suit is causing him. Spidey collapses due to injury on the way back to his apartment only to be discovered by MJ and nursed back to health. Meanwhile he has also discovered that his father and Brock actually had a fallout over the suit- his father left the project fearing the suit was too powerful and Brock was killed trying sell it to terrorists.

The Scorpion goes after JJJJr for his role in his creation. Pete intervenes but in a symbiote induced rage rips the tail from Gargan’s back, leaving him crippled and in comatose due to extreme shock.
Pete rids himself from the suit but is guilt ridden by his actions- even a being promoted to a full time researcher at Roxxon doesn’t cheer him up. Our final Pete scene sees him knocking on MJ’s door
Pete- It turns out maybe I could use a friend after all.
MJ- Well then face it Tiger; You just hit the jackpot.
The final scene of the movie sees Eddie- who now hates Peter due to his reveal of his Father’s dubious morality- bonding with the remaining suit sample.

Venom- We will be poison to you Spider-Man, We are Venom (growl)

During this film Pete also bumps into Flash who reveals that he is joining the Army after being inspired by Spidey.

Web of Shadows

Set a few months later this film sees Pete in a bit better place- he is almost dating MJ with the two almost kissing in some nice Rom-com-ish moment towards the start of the film. He is doing well as a scientist at Roxxon under the watchful eye of mentor Alistair Smythe.

Unfortunately Smythe isn’t on the straight and narrow and we see him selling weapons that include Oc tech to opposing crime families vying for control of the city now that Spider-man has once again disappeared. This results in the creation of Shocker from a mob enforcer and Vulture from the corpse of a hero police officer. Vulture takes up much of the screen time out of these two, clashing with Police and once with a street clothes Spider-Pete who investigates a blood sample to identify the Vulture and what has happened.

A more sinister angle plays through the film as Eddie resurfaces- stalking Pete and MJ to a semi-date and vandalising MJ’s apartment as Venom. He also reveals Pete’s secret to Aunt May and puts her in the hospital. After this MJ is able to convince Pete to become Spider-man again but he is defeated by Venom who attempts to unmask Pete in front of JJJJr. Pete however escapes.

In the movie’s big action sequence a gang war erupts in New York with the Vulture and Shocker destroying huge amounts of the city when they lock horns. Pete cannot resist joining the fray and defeats Shocker. Whilst locked in battle with the Vulture Pete is able to restore the memories of the officer by reminding him of his family. The sequence seems to be the positive Villain reformation Spidey story we are used to until Venom strikes from  the shadows, killing the Vulture and disappearing.

Recognising the Ock tech that allows the Vulture to mentally control its wings Spidey mistakenly and angrily accuses Doctor Octavius of selling his tech to gangs and engages him in combat which results in an accident bonding Ock to his arms.
Pete vows to return as Spider-man to make his city safe again. He and MJ finally kiss.
(6 0f 6 villains (inc rhino and Electro) and Smythe now established for SS)

Web of Spider-man

Pete and MJ are now dating whilst Pete returns to Spider-Man full time. He is also recruited by Horizon labs to become a senior researcher but leaves Roxxon on good terms with boss Smythe.
Pete immediately begins work into using sonics for everyday tasks and this results in his first patent- using sonics to help stimulate nerves in a damage spine and move towards curing paralysis (see Web of Lies Scorpion).

Flash returns from  War having lost his legs and is hailed a hero. He and Pete re-connect.
The main drama erupts from the shadow of Brock hanging over Pete, Mj and Aunt May. He psychologically tortures the gang until he challenges Pete within horizon labs. During the fight Pete discovers that sonic waves are the creatures weakness and later lures him to a church at the stroke of midnight to defeat the creature. Eddie is left weak and cancer-ridden.

Pete proposes to MJ- she has pulled him up from the darkness and he know life is short.
Mid credit scene shows Flash recruited for Project Venom (sets up Venom solo movie).

There it is folks, will you go see my movies? :-P Sound off below.

I really like how you made Venom a cunning and ruthless adversary, who aims to tear down Peter's life one step at a time, both physically and mentally. This really is how Venom is supposed to be portrayed. IMO, he could be seen as the Bane of Spider-Man comics. The thing that makes Eddie Brock/Venom unique is that he thinks SPIDEY is the evil bad guy.

that is an incredible continution of the trilogy you've made making it true to the soruce material and giving eachother a voice. i like the approach of jameson as mayor as he seems to best fit that in this universe. i also love how flash still has a character and an arc in this series and totally love the chemistry between him and mj. i looked up bella thorne and my god she is young. a convincing adolecent but way younger than garfield. i always pictured either jane levy or karen gillan as MJ.
i also love how you made venom the main trilogy's bad guy like the bane mixed with joker kind of guy mentally and physically torturing peter and screwing up gang related crimes.for the vulture i think robert enguld would be my most favorite choice and for shocker since ryan gosling was announced he might as well play him or the guy who played locke from game of thrones. i haven't picked my eddie brock yet so i'll keep looking.

i alway thought that TASM series and spiderman in general best fits for a tv series and even feels like one even explaining the synopsis and watching the trailers and even reading the comics. so for this development to expand i would like for connors to continue his story with rhys ifans reprising the role. here he gets tortured in ravencroft for this whole lizard rumor/news. his family moved to florida where they wouldn't get harrassed by the neighbors and media. his main antagonist/torturer would be cletus kassidy after he got sent to ravencroft from, his confrontation with spiderman. he mentally and physically harms him everyday even to the4 point where he cuts 3 fingers just to see/tease him in they can grow back. his only friend he can rely on is doctor kafa(or rename her miles warren since doctor strangelove took her name). after they encounter one another they slowly develop feelings for eachother. peter is also involved in this arc and this is during the events of TASM 2 to see if he asks him what he knows and tells him the truth. he felt betrayed because he's helping the son of one of the man who ruined him and the parker's lives despite harry being completely different from norman but makes sense because he couldn't even trust harry either since he believe he'll end up like his father. just sociopathic and selfish. he hangs up on peter while peter begs him not to hang up. during his fight with electro connors has the perfect opportunity to escape while a riot completely breaks out. he confronts cletus and the chase and fight scene was not a pretty sight. connors overpowers him and tries to scare him off as well. i don't know if he'll start to have a new like with kafka/miles or not but somebody has got to give this version of connors a role. since he still has the lizard persona he's been trying to fightr it off, sees halluciantion of the lizard even a newly evolved one including norman, fiers, martha, billy, richard, mary, and peter. he also tries to hide this in secret to make sure his situation with the inmates/patients don't get any more worse especially not wanting to deal with "that bloody animal cletus". i mean oscorp has been threatening him for years, killed his friends, and now thanks to them he's rotting in a cell getting tortured and people even his family viewing him as a monster. there would be several hints in his arc and in TASM 1 that he might've caused the death of richard and mary because osborn and fiers threatened to kill his family and friends if he doesn't tell them. they have been keeping a good eye on his family and friends like they've done so with peter.

thoughts guys?

Complete reboot at Marvel Studios is the only way i'll be interested in upcoming Spidey movies. Kraven's Last Hunt would be great.

also, after watching TASM 2 i sorta liked it a little. yeah it's still has alot of problem but the chemistry was spectacular and garfield really nailed both peter and spiderman reminding me of the romita version where he was in college for being down to earth, charismatic, and friendly like his scenes with harry and the scene with harry in his house drunk, despite being mess around with the editing, was a classic spiderman moment sicne whenever peter tries to do good hiding his secret people always confront him like this.

@Dingbat

kraven's last hunt is early to make. even if they incredible hulk it it's way too early since we have no idea who vermin, robbie nor kraven are and mary jane being already married to peter, while satisfying, is way too early to make. none of these characters had the development they've processed yet. this arc like spiderman himself best serves in television since when you look at the mythos with the romance, characters, power and responsibility, the series best serves on the small screen.

This whole "revert to Marvel" is boring, and no they shouldn't reboot.
The movie made a lot of money still and therefore it's worth saving.
The marketing was terrible, the story was cluttered and these are things that can be fixed.

Firstly, I'd have Felicia be the main love interest in TASM3, you have Felicity Jones who is sure to be nominated for an Oscar, that's good PR. - their relationship can be more fun and dangerous compared to Gwen, and it's a good bridge to have between his two huge love interests.

Stick to one villain again, with Osborne and the other off somewhere plotting a comeback. Kraven or Venom, make it a real despicable villain.

@nuyhm7ai

True, if they were to adapt it exactly like the comics. If Spidey does get a reboot, I just don't want to see his origin again so I chose a story later on in his career. I just want to see Kraven tbh.

as do i but we can't skip everything that far. i'd rather they just focus on expanding the mythos on television because that's where the character belongs in.

Superheros on TV are becoming a hot commodity. High School Peter Parker then?

the first one was decent, second was oversaturated with characters. but in the end, how could you not want to see this property be handled by the guys building Marvel's cinematic universe. How good would this look?

@3Traced

use the "greater than/less than sign" to open/close the link instead of brackets ([]) as you used before.

type "img src=" and post the link of the image. Close with the "greater than" sign.

Here's a smaple of the code:

You don't need to specify the width and height unless you want to "customize" your image.

Also the image shows the link under quotes, but I never put quotes on mine and it seem to work just fine to me, so I don't think it's necessary.

I hope this helped.

No need to reboot and no need to fully revert.
But Sony can use some help. Or a lot. Nothing wrong with that.

The quick fixes that Marvel haters are suggesting in this thread will not result in a better movie. All the creative people need to be replaced. Sony can keep the executives' wallets and the profit.

How the [frick] are people still defending this shit franchise since its so obvious how stupid and incompetent the suits at SONY are? The email leak now confirms it? First TASM was dark and wannabe Batman Begins/Twilight, TASM2 then has a massive shift in tone to a bizarre Avengers/Schumacher hybrid. I say revert to Marvel and reboot this crap. Dylan o'brien for MCU Spidey/Peter Parker!

@CherryBomb
How is that at all "boring"? Spider-Man needs to come home to the MCU where he belongs. Not to mention all the leaks pretty much confirm talks are serious. You can't make a freaking universe with ONE CHARACTER. Sony is throwing sh-t at a wall and trying to see what sticks.
NightForce
NightForce - 12/15/2014, 9:46 AM
I can't believe there is a real opportunity for Spider-Man to come home to Marvel Studios, and the brainless SONY robots still want Sony to continue this dopey, half-assed embarrassment of a franchise. Sony has done nothing but mishandle Spider-Man for years, and its visible in both TASM films that Sony has no clue what to do with Spider-Man.

TASM 1was never a twilight movie. It never acted like one to begin with. Peter was still geeky and confident while Gwen was smart and normal. He's 100000000000x better than shitbag maguire
