BOX OFFICE: Not So AMAZING; SPIDER-MAN Sequel Falls To #2 After One Week At #1
Though some analysts thought there was a chance that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 could hold onto the top spot before Godzilla stomps on the spider next week, Neighbors has indeed emerged victorious. Not a good result for Sony domestically...
As expected, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has indeed dropped to #2 after only one week of release. The Friendly Neighborhood superhero was clobbered by some not so friendly neighbours in the Seth Rogen and Zac Efron led comedy, Neighbours. Earlier this week, analysts predicted that it could cause an upset, but many later stood firmly behind their predictions that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 would hold onto the top spot. However, with $51 million, Neighbors became Seth Rogen's highest grossing debut and shrugged off the Marc Webb helmed sequel which trailed behind with a 59% drop for a $37 million weekend. Domestically, it now looks set to earn only $225 million to $235 million all in. Not great and a real low point for the franchise financially speaking, but it's what it makes overseas which will help ensure this version of Spider-Man swings onto the big screen for a third time in 2016. After all, with over $400 million overseas, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has now hit $550 million worldwide. When you look at those numbers, it doesn't seem so bad, but North America is still a vital market and this is still far lower than the $1 billion gross Sony were expecting. How well it fares against the first movie's total will be interesting to see!
