Why An X-MEN: DOFP Stinger With TASM 2? The Answer Will Disappoint Crossover Fans

When it was revealed that the post-credits stinger for Marc Webb's Amazing Spider-Man sequel was actually a scene from X-Men: Days Of Future past, some fans thought this might have meant that Fox and Sony were planning a crossover. But clearly that wasn't the case..

Two rival studios teaming up to produce a movie featuring the CBM characters they hold the respective rights to is something fans have dreamed of seeing for many years..and unfortunately, they'll have to keep dreaming. Earlier today it was revealed that in some Countries, the post-credits stinger in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was a scene from Bryan Singer's new X-Men flick, which featured Mystique, Toad and Havoc taking on Stryker and his men. The Webhead wasn't present of course, nor did the scene have a thing to do with the movie that preceded it, but some fans still thought this meant that a crossover was in the pipeline. Well, sorry to report that was not the case. Variety did some digging and here's what they discovered.

The reason, Variety has learned, is that “Spider-Man” director Marc Webb had an existing contract with Fox Searchlight to helm another film following 2009′s “500 (Days) of Summer.” After “The Amazing Spider-Man” in 2012, Webb’s negotiations briefly stalled with Sony as he was caught in a tug-of-war with Fox. Eventually, Fox agreed to allow Webb to direct Sony’s “Spider-Man” sequel, but only if Sony would promote its “X-Men” film for free.

So there you have it: not only are we not getting a crossover, but Sony were actually kinda held to ransom over the whole thing! Make no mistake about it guys; short of one company buying the rights to the other's Marvel characters, or agreeing to an equal share of the takings (which is a very tricky issue when merchandise sales etc factor in), something like this just isn't likely to happen anytime soon.

I actually knew about the problem with Fox searchlight and Webb directing ASM2, and I was wondering how they worked it out.

really? they let marc direct tasm 2 if he did free promotion for fox? and that means putting an after credits scene for the wrong movie? thats a very interesting way of going about things

Smart move by FOX. Don't need to make another movie with a crappy director and they get free advertising.

I was starting to think Sony and Fox were teaming up to take down Marvel Studios. But regardless, that won't ever happen lol

It's a shame Fox and Sony can't make consistently good movies like Marvel Studios.

Sony made two fantastic movies in Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2, but all the movies since (Spider-Man 3, Ghost Rider, Ghost Rider: SOV, The Amazing Spider-Man, The Amazing Spider-Man 2) have ranged from mediocre to awful.

Fox have occasionally made some great movies, like X-Men 2, First Class, The Wolverine - but they've been interspersed with stinkers like Elektra, Fantastic Four: ROTSS, X-Men: The Last Stand, etc.

I'm gonna find the boardroom of executives at FOX and water-board every single one of those mother[frick]ers until the rights are back with those [foo foo]s at Marvel where the belong, then I'm going to find Marc Webb and rip his spine out through his asshole for making terrible Spider-Man movies. JUST MAKE THE GREEN GOBLIN GREEN YOU FILTHY [foo foo]S!

I'm telling ya I saw a guy look just like Kevin feige on FOX's America serial killers lol

McNyagano - 4/16/2014, 2:17 PM
Feige didn't have as much creative freedom on the Fox and Sony films as he does with the MCU films. Avi and Laura were more in control of the Sony and Fox films respectively.
