David Ayer Responds To James Gunn Revealing WB Agreed To THE SUICIDE SQUAD R-Rating With No Hesitation

It's been well documented that David Ayer was told to tone down his vision for Suicide Squad, and the director has now responded to James Gunn Tweeting that he was given the OK for his R-rated sequel.

David Ayer has always maintained that his original take on Suicide Squad was very different to the movie that Warner Bros. would ultimately release, and recently stated that he made "an amazing movie" that "just scared the shit out of the executives."

The director never really elaborated on what exactly made them so nervous, but the studio was clearly more open to the prospect of an R-rated Suicide Squad movie by the time James Gunn pitched his idea for a sequel/reboot.

Gunn sent out the following Tweet when Collider shared the details of their 2019 set visit, and Ayer had a very brief, but telling response of his own.

Ayer is clearly a little disappointed that it took WB so long to embrace a more adult-orientated take on Task Force X, but as Gunn points out in his follow-up Tweet, some of the key people making those decisions are different now.

"Although a lot of the major players at Warners were different people, there was no doubt their troubles with you helped to pave an easier path for me, David, so I’m very grateful for that, and for everything else you did to help this movie along its path."

Warner Bros. boss Ann Sarnoff hasn't been swayed by the #ReleaseTheAyerCut campaign, and recently made it very clear that she has no intention of allowing Ayer to revisit Suicide Squad. There's always a chance this exchange could renew interest, but we won't be holding our breath!

This is why I love the WB/DC they aren't opposed to doing comic book movies with R ratings, elseworld and or darker they're versatile whereas Marvel isn't nor allows for it with their movies.

@John456

There’s room for both

@John456 - Even though they were very clearly afraid of doing a comic book movie with an r-rating in 2016.

@regularmovieguy - There is I just wish Disney & the head of Marvel now were more open to comic movies within and outside the MCU that were of both ratings and different visions.

@John456 - Deadpool 3 is already confirmed R

@Havenless - Yea Feige did announce that it was R rated but more likely I feel he didn't want make it R rated, only doing it cause of the huge pressure from the franchises fanbase. His response on no other movies outside of Deadpool 3 being R rated and his views on Blade explains a whole lot.

@John456 - mcu is versatile just in a different way.

@MikeDrop1 - Not really they make the same movie every year and most of them are family friendly children comedies and they all look the same yea I know it's films within a shared universe but still.

@John456 - Yeah but WB/DC only does that for "prestige" directors or else you have a hard time budgeting, editing, and shooting your own film. Just ask Todd Phillips and David Ayer.

Matt Reeves and James Gunn got special privilege. At least Marvel doesn't discriminate, no matter who makes a Marvel film they will always have final edit and reshoots with or without the director's approval.

@John456 - The R-rated DC movies so far didn't really need an R-rating. Joker had one violent scene with blood and lord knows why BoP was rated R because I sure don't.

@soberchimera - even more moronic that they wanted to tone down a movie where “Suicide” is literally in the title. What did they not want to miss selling all those Suicide toys to young kids? Shoulda let Ayer fully do his thing.

@John456 - I'm just happy they seem to be making actual movies. Everybody keeps complaining like "Oh man, DC doesn't have a plan, this is gonna blow up". But to me it's more exciting that there's no plan. It's going to feel less like a tv show (like the MCU, love it or hate it) and more like a series of films.

Like Shazam? Kid friendly as can be but there were things in Shazam you'll never see in a Marvel movie. Like that scene between Billy and his Mom? Too slow and emotional for an MCU film. That's not even mentioning things like Joker. Love or hate Joker, that's the type of experiment Marvel would never have the balls to do.

@John456 - I don't get why you guys keep claiming the MCU isn't dark when a lot of the kills in various MCU movies are pretty violent. I feel like you guys want to see endless gore and dismemberment to really sell the "R" for you.

If Ayer followed up Suicide Squad with a banger I’d give him the benefit of the doubt. But he followed them with Bright and The Tax Collector.

We’re good as is.
