David Ayer Says SUICIDE SQUAD's Negative Critical Reception Made Him Feel Nervous About Directing BRIGHT

Suicide Squad was a critical disaster for Warner Bros., even though the film did quite well at the box office. Director David Ayer has said the reception to the film left him feeling a little "gun shy".

Based on the film's trailers, 2016's Suicide Squad looked set to deliver what fans wanted from the "worst of the worst" in the DC Universe, but when the film hit theatres, it all went downhill from there. David Ayer's supervillain story was slammed with a barrage of negative reviews, and while it still managed to gross almost $750 million worldwide, it didn't leave the lasting impression that Warner Bros. or Ayer were hoping for.

“It was sh–. Yeah, it was sh– reviews. I got my throat cut,” Ayer acknowledged to Entertainment Weekly in a recent interview. “It was a super polarizing movie. Incredibly polarizing.”

Ayer continued on to explain how the reception left him feeling nervous about directing his latest film, Bright, for Netflix. “It’s like going to the boxing ring and getting knocked out is how it felt. And I had to go into the ring again. And directing is a confidence game, because you’re selling everyone on something that only exists in your head. The actors have to feel that confidence to trust that you know what you’re doing, and so does your crew. As a director, you set the tone. Really, it’s coming off that movie, I understood the pitfalls, I understood the dangers, I knew where the alligators hide, you know? And so I made damn sure I didn’t repeat any mistakes.”

Unfortunately for Ayer, Bright also fared very poorly with critics, though he is taking the reception in stride. In fact, the director has a special plan for the critic who called the film "the single worst movie of 2017".

“This is going on my fridge," Ayer said of the quote. "Highest compliment is a strong reaction either way. This is a f–king epic review. It’s a big fun movie. You can sure string words together Mr. [Ehrlich]. I’d love to read any script you’ve written.”

What do you make of Ayer's thoughts? Let us know in the comments! Bright is now streaming on Netflix.

Bright wasn't that bad but I feel that he might have went into this movie with a bit of hesitation because of Suicide Squad. He just needs to day f*@# it and just concentrate on making a better movie on the next one.

Well he did ghettoize
the joker and harley quinn and missed the tone of what suicide squad is just like the rest of the dceu so its not entirley his fault.

itts these studios without a clear direction.

They want to make marvel money but dont understand why marvel is so successful, I mean disney doesnt even get it, look what they did with star wars.

Blade runner 2049 is amazing because they didnt go and try to make blade runner into something its not, that moviewe is diripping cyber punk and if they did it in any other way it would suck.

Marvel adapts their comcis the way they are supposed to be adapted, exactly like they are on the page and they even fall short when they change charaqcters like zemo, who would be amazing to see on screen, they just caitered to the actor on that one.

Dont change things from the source, its that simple, deadshot being will smith went against what deadshot was and made him into something hes not and theres a reason these characters last as long as they do because if they were anything else, they wouldnt last in popularity.

You wouldnt make daredevil basically luke cage, and you wouldnt make luke cage daredevil.

Just like if they created a new blade who was white? Id say [frick] that. I dont want a white blade, screw white blade its stupid, it goes against the entire point of who the character is by making him white.

Its not about race, its about adapting the source correctly and staying true to what something is.

Im hoping disney adapts the xmen exactly like Xmen the animated series. Im hoping they learn from this sw ep 8 bs and stop trying to cut corners creativly and screw the fans over just to try and piss people off.

SW was a big wake up call in that it showed me what i dont want from films, and it showed me how far studios were willing to go to try and shit on fans without them noticing, or we notice before its to late.

They arent trying to do whats right, they are hoping blind fans wont notice and will accept it by giving them more cash because thats all that matters to them.

So we as fans have to hold them to a standard because without that standard it starts veering off into left field of weird lame trash no one wants to see besides the jerks out there with bad taste without any idea of why something they like is good and how it fails to be something once that product is changed into something that its not.

If you think TLJ was actively trying to sh*t on fans, then you missed the point.

@MattBellissimo - I agree that TLJ was in fact sh2ting on fans and using the blind faith in the words "Star Wars" for money. The real test will be the next one when fans would have opened eyes to the fact that this SW has nothing in common with the SW of the past.

If the Suicide Squad that reached theaters represented something that he thought highly of, then yes... he should question his judgement and have less confidence in it. It’s perfectly fine to take a swing and miss... it’s going to happen to everyone from time to time. But as an artist, you have to know when you got enough of a piece of what you were swinging for or not.

I don't see why there is so much hate for Bright. I watched it and thought it was average. Definitely not horrible
