It Sounds Like Jared Leto Is Really Committing To The Role Of 'The Joker' In SUICIDE SQUAD

Rumour has it that Jared Leto is really throwing himself into the role of The Joker on the set of Suicide Squad, and insiders are apparently saying that his take on the Clown Prince of Crime will end up topping Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight. Hit the jump for further details...

While the below Instagram post from @umbertogonzalez doesn't reveal a lot about Jared Leto's take on The Joker, it's still a fascinating glimpse into how the actor is committing to the role in David Ayer's Suicide Squad. Heath Ledger went to similar measures for The Dark Knight, living in a hotel room and keeping a diary of what he thought someone as twisted as the Clown Prince of Crime would think about and find funny (AIDS and landmines for example). Of course, there are those who blame Ledger's death on how far into The Joker's mind he went, so hopefully Leto doesn't embrace the role too much. Regardless, where do you think his take on the villain will rank?

Leto is known for staying in character on set at all times. He's very much a method actor. This is par for the course.

I'm not expecting him to surpass what Ledger accomplished with the Joker in The Dark Knight, because I don't think that's possible.

What I am expecting is Leto to match what Ledger accomplished. I'm expecting a truly unique take on the character, and a portrayal that leaves a lasting impression.

And I'm ridiculously excited about the possibility of seeing the same Joker in more than one movie.

This is what I've been saying. Leto is a PHENOMENAL actor, so I know he will absolutely OWN the role. Hopefully Leto is Oscar worthy here, because him winning/being nominated for an Oscar would be awesome. I actually love the Joker look, and the actor, so I'm [frick]ing ready.

Bring on Suicide Squad.

Fan perception is everything. Of course people on the movie set are going to say he tops Ledger's Joker. I'll wait until the theater, thanks.

Not a fan of his look. But Leto will surpass Ledgers Joker.

I do hope he signed a multi-film contract. Leto hasn't done the same character twice, has he? I can't imagine them getting an actor of Leto's caliber and not signing him on for more films.

heath ledger was less a villain of comic book proportions and more an eccentric anarchist not unlike what you might find on criminal minds. i was hoping this joker would fall somewhere between arkham asylum and batman tas. being grounded in reality isnt a bad thing, but this is also a comic book movie. a little surrealism is to be expected. these guys operate in the same universe as an extraterrestrial, a cyborg, a demigod and a freak lab accident who can travel through time.

Staying in character behind the scenes isn't living in a hotel for a month and BECOMING the character. No offense but LEDGER IS LEGEND!!!

Some people need to rewatch The Dark Knight.
Heath Ledger is unrecognizeable in the role. Complete transformation.

Don't be blasphemes about Ledgers Joker! I guess we find out whose a NTF (Nolan trilogy fan) and whose just a DCFB (DCFanBoy) …. Leto will never top Ledger or Nicholson so don't get hopes too high;)

I'm more impressed by the fact that Ledger didn't have to stay in character behind the scenes and managed to pull of a performance like that.

Why would you want him to surpass ledger??? That means it would affect his psyche. Ledger BECAME the Joker and it hurt him unfortunately. His performace was just breathtaking and he became unrecognizable. Idk if it can ever be surpassed because it shouldn't. People not realize that he WAS that charactee. Who ever is it saying they think Leto can beat him, don't know what they're talking about. They need to remember how far Ledger went and how it affected it.

Batman was playing on repeat at the USO tent when I was stuck in Kuwait for a week (bad weather) coming back from Iraq again in 09. Having watched it that many times, I can confidently say that while I'm no fan of Ledger, this schmuck won't come close to rivaling his Joker. Not because he died or any of that crap, but because it was such an interesting take on the character. Harley will rock, but not so much the J man.
Steelmatic
Steelmatic - 5/13/2015, 7:29 AM
Man, I can't wait to see what he comes up with.

I am hoping for a very flamboyant, flashy, over the top Joker. I liked Ledger's take, but his muttering, low key Joker isn't what I am hoping for this time around.
