No Plans To Release SUICIDE SQUAD Trailer; Leaks May Mean No More SDCC Footage In Future
Warner Bros. and Fox are not happy about the Comic-Con exclusive trailers for Suicide Squad and Deadpool being leaked by fans armed with their cell phones, and it sounds like future visitors to the event are going to suffer! Hit the jump for details on that and more...
This year's Comic-Con was good for footage, but bad for announcements. Only some of the former ended up being officially released, but two of the most highly anticipated 2016 releases - Deadpool and Suicide Squad - were not, and have ended up being recorded and uploaded by fans in attendance. Now, Deadline brings word that these leaks mean that major studios are now reconsidering bringing footage to the event in future, so you might want to reconsider going!
It all depends on whether Comic-Con organisers can increase security, but as technology advances (Periscope ran wild this weekend), it's getting harder and harder to do so. Sue Kroll, the President of Worldwide Marketing and International Distribution for Warner Bros. has even issued a statement about the Suicide Squad leak. "We have no plans currently to release the Suicide Squad footage that leaked from Hall H on Saturday. It’s unfortunate and ultimately damaging that one individual broke a long-standing trust we have enjoyed with our fans at the convention by posting early material, which, at this point, was not intended for a wider audience. We are still in production on Suicide Squad, and will have a big campaign launch in the future. Our presentation yesterday was designed to be experienced in that room, on those big screens!"
Unless they're willing to release finished footage online immediately after it's shown in Hall H, this is a problem which is likely going to persist. Some fans have suggested live streams that you have to pay to access, but someone would inevitably just film that and start sharing unfinished clips and trailers the studios don't want out there anyway, so...maybe only bring stuff which can be released in future?
