Zack Snyder's Justice League is coming to HBO Max in 2021, and that means the #ReleaseTheSnyderCut campaign paid off (after all, it's hard to imagine this happening without that vocal support online). Now, though, a lot of fans are really getting behind #ReleaseTheAyerCut to support David Ayer's original vision for 2016's Suicide Squad.
The question is, does the "Ayer Cut" actually exist? Well, as it happens, yes it does!
In a tweet written in Spanish, Ayer says, "Of course it exists. And it is almost complete except for some visual effects." This was to be expected, as Warner Bros. reshaped the movie with reshoots and outside editing companies fairly late in post-production.
Outside of those unfinished visual effects, it sounds like Ayer's Suicide Squad is essentially ready to go, especially as so much of it (the original ending with The Joker teaming up with Enchantress, for example) was filmed. Now, the next question fans are going to have is whether it will ever be released.
While Suicide Squad was a box office hit, a reboot/sequel called The Suicide Squad is coming next year from James Gunn. Would the studio really choose to release this Director's Cut in 2021? If they did, it would either prove to be a disastrously dumb move, or one which increases interest in the next instalment.
We'll have to wait and see.
