THE SUICIDE SQUAD Director James Gunn Says Warner Bros. Did Ask Him To Make The Movie PG-13

We know that James Gunn developed The Suicide Squad with an R rating in mind, but the director has now revealed that Warner Bros. did initially ask him if he could bring it in at PG-13.

James Gunn has always maintained that he only ever envisioned The Suicide Squad as an R-rated film, but as it turns out, Warner Bros. did initially ask him if he could bring it in at a PG-13.

During an interview with Collider, Gunn was asked if he was surprised that the studio allowed him to make the kind of movie he wanted since it was so different to most other DCEU entries (Birds of Prey was also R-rated, but pretty tame in comparison).

"I think I have a sort of blindness about that sort of thing," he replied. "I wrote the script the whole time, thinking they would let me make it, I mean, they asked, 'Can you make this PG-13?' I said, no. I said, 'You can make it and take it with somebody else, and they can direct it, and you can do a PG 13. But if I'm going to direct it, I want it to be R.' They were like, 'Okay, that's worth the trade-off for us.' So, they were great about it."

Gunn was also asked if he'll continue to make R-rated comic book movies going forward, and pointed out that he'd simply do whatever the story required.

"I would never do an R-rated Guardians of the Galaxy. It just wouldn't be what that show is. It's for families, and old people love it. It's more like a fairy tale. And I think it is completely, that is what it is. Suicide Squad is something very different than that, and the stakes are different. All of that is different. But if I were to do say a Shazam movie, which I'm not saying I'm going to do a Shazam movie, I don't think that should be R-rated either. I think if I did that, it would be PG-13. If I did Deadpool, it would be rated R."

It's true that The Suicide Squad would almost certainly have made more money at the box office if it was rated PG-13, but then, it'd be a completely different movie!

The Suicide Squad is now playing in theaters and on HBO Max. You can check out our 5-star review below.

Honestly the movie wouldn't have been much different than it was if it were pg13. They'd lose some "[frick]s" an unnecessary dick shot, and gore that was only there for the sake of being over the top. Harley is liked mainly by teenage girls and those attracted to Margot. But the R stopped a lot of Harley fans from seeing it. Gunn made King Shark into a cartoon character that kids would love just like Groot only to not be seen by the audience that would most love him. It was a dumb move to make the movie R rated.

@l0rdleg0las - I completely agree. I enjoyed it fine the way it was but a couple of language tweaks and toning down the graphicness of the violence could have easily afforded this a PG-13 and not hurt it narratively.

Much like JL'21, Gunn did it because he could. People complain about studio interference but sometimes there has to be a line drawn and boundaries set and they should have held firm before the cameras started rolling.

Suicide Squad shouldn’t be PG-13. Just doesn’t lend itself well to that rating.

There's a great PG13 version of Suicide Squad that definitely pushes the boundaries of that rating, but I really wouldn't want that in place of what we got.

@BlackBeltJones - id say that's more Hollywood than anything else. For the longest time we were only getting big pg13 movies, with r being something rarely done on movies not expected to make much. It wasn't until 2016 with Deadpool that studios started to see people wanted that kind of content.

Pg13 was seen as the ultimate rating, mature enough to convince adults to see it without kids, and appropriate enough that parents were fine with kids seeing.

Honestly the thing here is that suicide squad failing might make studios rethink r ratings.

Suicide Squad shouldn’t be PG-13.

Wouldn't have been a different movie. Tone down the gore and lose the F-bombs and one pair of naked titties that we saw and you could have made the exact same story with the exact same character development and exact same humor. Nothing at the essence of the story was rated R. The only thing that might have been difficult to justify would have been the scene where Peacemaker and Bloodsport were one-upping each other.

Outside of feeling like the story deserved the R-Rating I also feel it helped kind of differentiate it tonally from Guardians.

For those saying Suicide Squad needs to be rated R, what about this movie that made it rated R was so important to the plot that it could not have been toned down, still kept the same story and reached a wider audience?

Literally turn down the gore a little, because it was over the top for the sake of being over the top. It didn't add anything to the story and wasn't an integral part of the story. It was literally just Gunn showing the world(or limited amount of viewers) he was able to do whatever he wanted. Remove some cringy jokes and take out a gratuitous dick shot.

Do those things, you get a PG-13 movie that tells the same story, flows a bit better and reaches a wider audience. Which is good, since the R rated movie isn't getting a sequel that a PG-13 may have

@l0rdleg0las - ...the opening, which properly established the premise and made the point clear that everyone involved are expendable and can die. While that can certainly be done without the blood and gore, it wouldn't be nearly as effective without seeing the mangled bodies all over the battlefield. Not to mention king shark would miss his whole joke if his killings were off screen (as evident by when venom tried to eat heads on a pg13).

Meh. Always felt SS was more appropriate for an R rating anyway given the source material.

Loved the movie. I have no problem with it being R-rated……but I think it could have easily been PG-13 without losing much.

None of the rated R jokes were funny at all. You know what was funny? Polky’s mom everywhere. Cracked me up.

Don't think the jokes are what made it Rated R.

@Battabing - too bad you can’t keep gore in pg13 then. How is it dumb and dumber can be the funniest movie of all time and plenty R movies can’t touch it. Not saying all, Apatow had a good run, and obviously the Farrelys had other hits, Carrey it no Carrey, that were R, but a lot of times, pg13 gets the point across. Is the gore Worth the low BO? I’ll leave that to the pundits

James Gunn Named In Lawsuit For Hosting “A Pedophile Themed Party”

The Suicide Squad director James Gunn has been named in a lawsuit against Mindless Self Indulgence lead singer James Euringer aka Jimmy Urine for hosting a “pedophile themed party.”

In the summons for the lawsuit obtained by Human Events, an anonymous woman accuses Euringer of “sexual assault, battery, and abuse of a 15 year-old girl, which occurred for nearly three years.”

Gunn’s best film on characterization alone. But I’d argue humor and action too, by far. So many awesome camera angles and shots. It deserves the critical acclaim what a ride! I’ve already watched it thrice.

James Gunn and his gore fetish. Didn't need to be Rated-R. Only Birds of Prey was worthy of the rating.
