The Suicide Squad has finally arrived in U.S. theaters and on HBO Max, and while it's been playing internationally for the past week, we're sure the majority of you have only just now checked it out.

More of a reboot than a sequel to 2016's Suicide Squad, James Gunn's take on Task Force X definitely feels like a fresh direction for the DC Extended Universe, and one that could be a game-changer for these characters, in particular. We're certainly excited to see where things go next for the franchise, but what exactly can you expect from Gunn's bloody take on this team of villains?

In this recap and discussion for the movie, we run through the plot, highlighting the biggest moments and reveals, and share some insights into what those developments might mean for this movie and beyond.

Whether you've seen the movie and just want a refresher or are curious about what to expect when you check out The Suicide Squad in theaters or at home this weekend, we're here for you.

8. Meet Task Force X

WI1133432333

We kick things off with a new Task Force X being assembled in Belle Reve for a dangerous mission in Corto Maltese. Rick Flag is joined by Captain Boomerang, TDK, Mongal, Javelin, Savant, Blackguard, Weasel, and Harley Quinn. They're being sent to the island to destroy Jötunheim, a Nazi-era laboratory that is home to the mysterious "Project Starfish."

Landing on the beach, Weasel drowns, and the team finds themselves squaring off with the might of the island nation's military. Blackguard steps forward and reveals he betrayed his fellow villains, but receives a bullet to the face for his troubles. With that, the rest of the team are taken out in suitably gory ways (find more details on that here), though Harley lives and Flag escapes.

A second Task Force X arrives - the first squad was just a diversion - and this one is made up of Bloodsport, Peacemaker, King Shark, Polka-Dot Man, and Ratcatcher 2.

7. Rescue Attempt

WI11334323332

Flashbacks explain that Bloodsport has been forced to join Waller's team because his daughter was caught shoplifting. No big deal, right? Well, unless he does what the A.R.G.U.S. boss says, she'll make sure the teenager is sent to Belle Reve, a place where her chances of surviving are slim.

Task Force X get acquainted with each other - which includes King Shark nearly eating Ratcatcher 2 - and learn that Flag is alive. Attacking a camp full of soldiers, the villains make short work of the men on duty only to discover that Rick has befriended these rebels in taking out Corto Maltese's new dictator Silvio Luna. Harley, meanwhile, is freed from captivity to meet with him.

While all this is happening, we learn that Starro was discovered in outer space and brought to Earth decades earlier. He's been experimented on - primarily by The Thinker - ever since, and Luna and his men hope to use the alien to control their enemies and make an impact on the world stage.

6. A Twisted Turn Of Events For Harley Quinn

WI113343233321

Bizarrely, it turns out that Luna wishes to marry Harley. Birds of Prey established that a lot of powerful men are interested in The Joker's former girlfriend, but given what a hunk this dictator is...well, Harley has no problem doing the nasty with him (in an extremely passionate sex scene).

It looks like Quinn might have found her happy ending, but when Luna starts talking about world domination and killing children, that's enough of a red flag for her to gun him down. Now, Mateo Suárez, the Major General of Corto Maltese, is in charge, and that really isn't good news for the country.

As for the rest of Task Force X, they head to a bar in an effort to apprehend The Thinker.

5. Reunited, And It Feels So Good

WI1133432333212

After a brief bonding session, Ratcatcher 2, Polka-Dot Man, and King Shark escape with The Thinker. Flag, Bloodsport, and Peacemaker, however, are apprehended by soldiers, but they make short work of their captors and end up escaping with relative ease (this is a seriously badass moment).

Before heading to Jötunheim, Flag wants to rescue Harley. She's being tortured by Suárez's men, but as soon as the opportunity presents itself, she's able to escape in The Suicide Squad's standout sequence.

Reunited with Task Force X - who never get the opportunity to pull off their rescue mission - Harley helps to interrogate The Thinker (well, "help" might be a reach) and they finally make their way to Project Starfish.

4. Betrayal

WI11334323332122

Breaking into the base, the team splits up and starts planting explosives. Flag and Ratcatcher 2, meanwhile, are introduced to Starro the Conqueror. The alien has not had a happy existence, and The Thinker has been experimenting on the mind-controlled enemies of Corto Maltese in shockingly gory ways.

Flag is furious, but even more shocked to learn that the U.S. Government was involved. The reason Task Force X has been sent there is to cover up their part in attempting to weaponise Starro, and the heroic leader of the team decides to take the drive with that information to expose it to the world.

Waller may have seen this coming, though, as Peacemaker has been tasked with stopping that happening in the name of peace. A brutal fight follows, ending with Flag being stabbed through the heart.

3. Holding Out For A Hero

WI1133432333212233

Ratcatcher 2 saw what Peacemaker did and goes on the run with that drive. The rest of the team find themselves battling the military, but a costly mistake by Polka-Dot Man sets off the explosives early.

Chaos ensues, and just as Peacemaker is about to gun down Ratcatcher 2, Bloodsport arrives. He figures out what's going on, and shoots his fellow villain, seemingly putting an end to him once and for all. Unfortunately, those bombs have just freed Starro, and after the alien tears The Thinker to pieces, he's unleashed on Corto Maltese and proceeds to take control of its population.

Waller orders the team to leave the people to their fate and return with the drive as a destabilised country will actually benefit the U.S. Bloodsport is conflicted and the team decides to do the right thing. Seconds from her detonating the bombs in their necks, Waller is knocked out by a subordinate!

2. Battle With Starro

WI113343233321223

An epic battle with Starro the Conqueror follows, with Polka-Dot Man, unfortunately, among the casualties.

Some good old fashioned teamwork ensures that the alien is eventually overwhelmed by an army of rats who tear him apart from the inside. It's a tragic end in some ways, especially as Starro's final words are that he was happy floating through space watching the stars before being taken to Earth.

The leader of the rebels takes control of the country, and while it's too late for those who were attacked by Starro's drones, Task Force X has saved countless lives (which Bloodsport's daughter and the rest of the world have seen on television). So, they're heroes, but what comes next for the team?

1. Freedom

WI1133432333212233

With that drive in hand, Bloodsport is able to blackmail Waller in order to gain his, Ratcatcher 2, Harley and King Shark's freedom. It's not exactly what Flag would have wanted, but he warns the A.R.G.U.S. boss that if she comes after any of them, the truth about the U.S. Government's involvement will be revealed.

Heading to safety, Bloodsport enjoys a moment of peace (with Ratcatcher 2's rat, Sebastian), and it's there we end things...until a post-credits scene reveals that Weasel is, in fact, still alive!

That's just for fun, but the second stinger is what really matters. In that, we learn Waller managed to pull Peacemaker from the rubble and saved his life. Now, he has a new mission (once he recovers) - to save the f***ing world! That's a story we'll see play out in HBO Max's Peacemaker next January...

The Suicide Squad was pretty nuts, crazy and entertaining to watch but not a masterpiece. 4 Stars out of 5 Stars for me.

I still liked both Guardians of the Galaxy movies better.

@DoubleD - I’m fully expecting it to be better than both Guardians films based solely on all the reviews. But I didn’t think GotG 1 was all that different from the MCU films up to that point, it just had more Gunn-ified dialogue whilst essentially having the exact same plot as Whedons first Avengers film. I’ll know for sure tomorrow!

@McMurdo - Hard part in Suicide Squad is their villain's done and do bad things. Hard to feel for them like Guardians of Galaxy.

@DoubleD - GOTG 1 maybe but the sequel was straight up BASURA aside from the Yondu subplot.

@McMurdo - Considering how you seem to be only shitting on the MCU so far in your other comments, I don't really think you're going to change your opinion.

@McMurdo - Suicide Squad already has a audience Score of 89% at Rotten Tomatoes with only 250 + reviews.

@DoubleD - I felt for Rocket and only barely. Just me tho plenty love that film

@SnideCut - my favorite comic book films are IM2008 and Cap 2. My favorite comic book character is Bruce Banner/Hulk. I get you have an obsession with Zach Snyder and that you are a MCU fanboy and I support you in that endeavor, but you’re just gonna have to get over it.

I liked the movie. Especially liked how it looked. Those RED cameras are 🤩.

Couple thoughts…

1.) Missed Will Smith. BUT not sure if Will Smith and his “Image” would have been willing to portray Deadshot the way Gunn wrote for Bloodsport.

2.) Deleted Scene/Fallout with Waller & Flagg??? Took me till after the film…but she assigned him to the Sacrificial Lamb Team. So she fully expected him AND Harley to get killed. Not surprised she was so willing to help me Quinn…but very surprised she was gonna just rid her of Flagg. Out of character for her? Bad writing for Gunn? Or does that fit with her?

3.) Taika - Oh boy…can’t see him in any film anymore without suddenly thinking he is spoofing or lampooning the material he is in. Dude has lost all viability as an actor in any role outside of Comedy Satire.
TheLobster
TheLobster - 8/6/2021, 8:43 AM
@IronGenesis - I would definitely see Will Smith turning in this performance just fine but I was happy with Idris. Also, Waller is cold as [frick]. I was hoping she would get a worse punishment than being hit in the head once.
Origame
Origame - 8/6/2021, 9:01 AM
@IronGenesis - I don't think team 1 was meant to be the sacrificial lamb team. Remember, the whole reason for the ambush was that black guard betrayed them. They just had two teams in case of something like this.
IronGenesis
IronGenesis - 8/6/2021, 9:05 AM
@Origame - thats interesting.

I thought Waller knew black guard would betray them so that’s why she picked him.

Thus creating the diversion.

So many possibilities ! 😂
Origame
Origame - 8/6/2021, 9:30 AM
@IronGenesis - I'll need to watch it again, but from what I remember of the opening scene she says something about bloodsport being right, implying he either knew of the betrayal or suspected something like this. So maybe it's more of waller not fully believing him but wanting a contingency plan in case.
Kingdork
Kingdork - 8/6/2021, 9:37 AM
@Origame - When you look at the opening credits there's this shot of Waller looking satisfied as she watch the screen with the dead members of team 1. The camera swirls around her and she smirks.
Origame
Origame - 8/6/2021, 9:53 AM
@Kingdork - I mean, that could just be her satisfied in the fact one team made it through. I'm just saying, in terms of it being considered inconsistent having rick on the sacrificial team is only a problem if it was always planned that way, which I don't agree with.
soberchimera
soberchimera - 8/6/2021, 8:10 AM
I get that Polka-Dot Man set off the bombs early by accident, but there weren't any bombs planted at the bottom with Starro, so surely if the bombs had gone off when they were supposed to he still would have escaped. And Waller not giving a shit seemed pretty unrealistic too as Starro would eventually grow more and more powerful and attack the US eventually.
GhostDog
GhostDog - 8/6/2021, 8:21 AM
@soberchimera - yea I found her lack of concern toward Starro running amok to be out of character. The only eventuality is that he would become powerful and attack the rest of the world.

I thought Starro saying “this is my city” over and over was the movie’s way of trying to hammer he only cares about conquering the isle that Imprisoned him but eventually he would go after the US as the main architect of his pain.
soberchimera
soberchimera - 8/6/2021, 8:32 AM
@BlackBeltJones - I'd think at the very least she'd call in a nuclear strike to take out Starro and the rest of the isle.
Chewtoy
Chewtoy - 8/6/2021, 8:48 AM
@soberchimera - Was it just that they hadn’t set any bombs in the lower level yet? Destroying the mainframe down there was the mission, after all.
Reeds2Much
Reeds2Much - 8/6/2021, 8:54 AM
@soberchimera - I figure she didn't care because she figured once it became public the real heroes would be called in to take care of it.
soberchimera
soberchimera - 8/6/2021, 8:57 AM
@Reeds2Much - By that time, Starro would've become too powerful, and if her interests were truly with American safety, she would have taken out Starro when she still could. Plus, it was established in the first movie that Task Force X was explicitly created because heroes like Superman weren't trusted.
soberchimera
soberchimera - 8/6/2021, 8:57 AM
@Chewtoy - Yeah, but Waller knew about Starro too and how dangerous he was, so not wanting to kill him as part of the mission is a bit strange to me.
Origame
Origame - 8/6/2021, 9:03 AM
@soberchimera - id say it's possible they had a plan to just nuke the city. Could have worked too since this starro is pretty nerfed compared to the comics. But yeah, it could've been better explained.
BackwardGalaxy
BackwardGalaxy - 8/6/2021, 9:32 AM
@soberchimera - Waller didn't want the Squad to engage because she was afraid their presence would out her involvement and questions would be asked. Like "why are these prisoners who should be in an American prison all fighting an alien starfish on tv?" Not to mention, Batman knows about her shenanigans. You don't think he's going to pay her a visit?
soberchimera
soberchimera - 8/6/2021, 9:37 AM
@BackwardGalaxy - The whole of point of using convicts/undesirables is to give the US government complete deniability anyway, it's established in both the comics and the first film. And I think the US being invaded by Starro and enslaving the population is a far worse threat than US involvement in his captivity being discovered.
ImNotaBot
ImNotaBot - 8/6/2021, 3:05 PM
@soberchimera - Starro taking over Corto Maltese would give a reason for the U.S to invade a foreign country, save the day and take whatevery they want (Maybe Starro body). The U.S government has Superman on their side, i don't think they fear Starro at all.
That happens in the real world all the time.

Calling it a reboot really isn't true. It's 100% a sequel. It took all the best parts of the first and ran

Really enjoyed this. Gorgeous looking movie. One of the more bonkers CBMS I've seen. It really exemplifies a good time at the movies.

Standouts: Ratcatcher, Polka Dot Man, King Shark, Bloodsport

Ratcatcher had me tearing up twice

Only gripes are the humor which was mostly miss, Harley and Peacemaker. I laughed once but Gunn’s humor isn't for me (I find Rocket funny most of the time though and I would say GOTG humor hits better). And Polka’s mom stuff got old toward the end. This is the best Harley’s been but her inclusion felt mandated. I didn’t Peacemaker remotely interesting until the final act when the concept of a guy like that really kicked in hard and became tense. He just felt like rated r Drax to me before that.
KWilly
KWilly - 8/6/2021, 8:20 AM
@BlackBeltJones - Honestly... If it wasn't for WB's Harley Quinn mandate, they should've given her role to Poison Ivy instead. Would be a good introduction to the character, and would be visually cooler with her actual powers.
GhostDog
GhostDog - 8/6/2021, 8:25 AM
@KWilly - Harley works best as a side character and this movie did that well up until the marrying em presidente shit. That felt like the studio told Gunn “we need to reiterate Harley moving on past falling for problematic men.”

If you cut that and added more team camaraderie that would’ve been dope. Or Flag connecting with the revolutionaries more.

I would’ve loved Ivy in Harley’s place too.
