THE SUICIDE SQUAD Takes Aim At $70 Million Opening Weekend At The Worldwide Box Office

Despite growing concerns over the Delta Variant of COVID-19, The Suicide Squad is expected to take in an impressive $70 million when it hits U.S. theatres and the HBO Max streaming service this weekend.

The Suicide Squad has been playing in The UK and several other locations since last Friday, but is only set to open in the US and most other major territories this weekend. James Gunn's riotously entertaining DC Comics adventure has already amassed $6.7 million from five international box office markets, and looks set to climb to $70 million worldwide by Monday.

Deadline reckons the critically-acclaimed supervillain flick should take in at least $30M (possibly closer to $40M) from 4,000 US/Canada theaters, and $40M overseas. The movie set to play in most remaining markets from Friday, aside from Japan, where it'll debut on August 13.

This would be a solid opening for an R-rated film under normal circumstances, but it'll be even more impressive if it climbs to $70M or over in the current climate. Though vaccines are rolling out all over the world, there is still some concern surrounding the highly contagious Delta variant of COVID-19, and there are those that aren't quite ready to brave the theater.

@kitheka - No, $70 million worldwide is a flop, Covid or not.

The U.S. box office isn't coming back at all this year, and the next year or so might be the deathblow.

@Feralwookiee - agree jungle cruise made $90 million world wide on a 200 mil budget and thats already a terrible flop no matter how disney tries to spin the story. china is in a blackout period and since suicide squad 2017 didn't even make it in their theaters i doubt this movie has any chance of opening over there either.

I agree, theaters are probably going to be permanently closed by next year or the following year because Covid-19 is not going away anytime soon.

Would be very good, especially with Delta, but it just feels a lil optimistic. Still think DC goes all in on Gunn after these reviews, hopefully Peacemaker is a success too.

Not bad considering it's carrying an R rating and HBOmax is giving it away for free.

I would have gladly given them PVOD money. Suckers.

Definitely catching this one in theaters! I try to watch as many of these blockbusters in theaters as I can. Watched Black Widow in theaters as well. Unfortunately also watched Snake Eyes in theaters thinking it was gonna be good lol.

@DrThomasWayne - To be fair, the trailers for Snake Eyes were actually pretty decent.

@GoldGuy yea I really thought it was gonna be better. I really like Andrew Koji ever since I watched Warrior (at least his performance was really good). I think what’s really a shame is all the quick cuts and shaky cam which prevented you from properly seeing the fights
