David Ayer Expresses Interest In Helming An R-Rated SUICIDE SQUAD Sequel
It's clear that Suicide Squad is going to take us to some dark places, but it's still set to be a PG-13 release. However, it seems director David Ayer is already contemplating an R-Rating for part two...
Deadpool exceeded expectations at the box office earlier this year, and while the planned R-Rated cut of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice wasn't a direct response to that, it does signal a possible shift in regards to how studios handle some comic book adaptations. Personally, I wouldn't be in the least bit surprised to see Suicide Squad also receive an adult orientated "Ultimate Cut" when it's released on DVD and Blu-ray, but it sounds like director David Ayer is already thinking about going down that route with the sequel.
"For an R movie, you have to decide to do it right out the gate, and that was never the case here," the filmmaker explained in an interview with MTV News. "We were always going to hit the PG-13 rating. But the film is meant to be that. It’s got edge, and it’s got attitude. And it’s got its own voice… There’s a lot in the film that’s going to surprise people." Asked if he would have any interest in making Suicide Squad 2 R-Rated, Ayer teased: "It would be worth lobbying for."
Of course, if the movie is a hit, it's unlikely Warner Bros. would let the follow-up be an R-Rated due to the fact that would cut off a large portion of the audience interested in seeing what's next for Task Force X! What do you guys think?
