It's been a whirlwind week for DC fans - particularly for those who were looking forward to seeing Henry Cavill back as Superman - and following the initial report that the actor would likely be hanging up the cape, James Gunn confirmed the news earlier tonight.
Gunn will pen the script for a new Superman film that will focus on a younger iteration of the Man of Steel (though it will not be an origin story), and another actor will step in to play the iconic DC Comics hero.
Now, Cavill has taken to Instagram to share a statement of his own.
Though the Enola Holmes star does attempt to put a positive spin on the development, he can't hide his disappointment, and who can blame the guy? Cavill confirms that he was told to announce his return to the role after his Black Adam mid-credits scene cameo, but this was prior to Gunn and Peter Safran being hired to take charge of the DCU as DC Studios co-heads.
Gunn did note that he has spoken to Cavill about potentially collaborating on a future DCU project, but, to be frank, after being jerked around by Warner Bros. like this, we wouldn't be surprised if he never wanted to work for the studio again.
What do you guys make of this news and Cavill's response? Do you understand the need to clean house, or do you feel the "Snyder Era" actors should remain on in their respective roles?
