We all very well aware of the fact that superhero costumes very rarely serve any significant purpose other than to make the heroes that wear them look distinct and cool. The costumes, for the most part, do not serve any function. They are visual attributes of the characters that do not define them. And while I have no problem with superheroes wearing the costumes (because, well, that's part of the genre and you can't change it, and I wouldn't want to change it), I do have a big problem with one aspect of the visual design of a character that I respect and like - Superman. And while I adore Superman, I never liked the idea of him having to wear a red underwear on the outside of his suit.
No, not because it looks stupid - and, well, kind of awkward - but because there is really no purpose to it. No function. I can say it's simply a design flaw that just so happen to be with the character since the days of his inception. It's just distracting. And while some really weird folks will write thousands and thousands of paragraphs of incomprehensible text, trying to prove me wrong - folks that need to get a life and find other things to be interested in other than undies of non-existent characters - I know for a fact that there is no real purpose to Superman's red underwear.
The only real argument that I heard and partly agreed with was the color balance. The sentiment with which I don't agree with fully, because Superman already has a cape for the color balance. While, yes, the color balance is that specific flavor that adds to the character's visual appeal, and I agree that it is important, I don't think that we need the red underwear for that. Bright red cape is a good, if not better substitution for Superman's red trunks. It creates needed color balance and actually looks good on the character. Granted, the cape serves no purpose as well, but if we talk about the color balance and stylistic distinction that the costume creates for the character, Superman's cape is more than enough for that.
I grew up with Superman. I remember watching Lois & Clark TV-show with my dad and my sister when I was five or six years old. Some of my favorite comics are in fact Superman comics. The New Krypton is one of my favorite comic book story arcs, period. But, I'm not a fanatic. I was okay when Superman's undies were scrapped during New 52, and I didn't give one damn when they were scrapped for Man of Steel (my second favorite Superman movie).
So, in short, my point is very simple: let the trunks go. Doesn't matter if we talk comics, cartoons, or movies. We all were fine with Marvel Cinematic Universe's Thor not having vibrant colors of his comic book counterpart on his costume and not wearing the iconic headgear that he wore for the majority of his history in the comics. So why can't we do the same thing for Supes? I think we should let it go. I don't care if red trunks come back to movies or comics, but I'd rather not have them.
