Jon Hamm Content With Non-Superhero Acting Career

One-time Superman contender Jon Hamm shares his thoughts on being a successful actor without a superhero role on your resume. "For me to sign on now to do a superhero movie would mean I would be working until I am fifty..."

Back when Zack Snyder was casting for Superman in Man of Steel, Mad Men actor Jon Hamm (43) was rumored to be a strong contendor.  Of course, the role ultimately went to Henry Cavill. But Hamm isn't losing any sleep over not landing the gig.  At the height of the Mad Men actor's popularity, Hamm stated that he was offered his fair share of superhero roles but he's turned all of them down.  Recently, Hamm told Radio Times, "The deals that they make you do [for superhero roles] are so draconian. And, of course, you are signed on for not only the movie that you are signed on for… but at least two more that you haven’t read and you have no idea what they are going to be and all the crossover ones you are going to have to do. For me to sign on now to do a superhero movie would mean I would be working until I am fifty as that particular superhero. It’s a lot of work at one thing which is not necessarily the reason I got into the business which is to do many things. If you want to spend all day pressing the same key that… seems an odd choice.”

However, with Mad Men ending next year, and Hamm presently without a leading role in a big summer blockbuster franchise, Hamm seems aware that his "studio-coveted" recognition factor may be waning.  "[If] you don’t wear a cape and tights for a living, you literally have a hard time making an impression. Ask anyone under the age of twenty if they have heard of me and they will go ‘no, that guy looks like my dad."

Haha, Hamm is awesome but I never saw really fitting a superhero role, definitely don't see him as Superman....

I think he would be cool in a CMB with a role similar to what Robert Redford had in Cap: TWS, no tights, but an imposing political figure, something along those lines

He's got a point.
You basically sign your life away when you sign up to these kinda of movies. You are forced to do future movies without seeing a script or knowing anything about the project until you get a phone call.

The scheduling for these future movies could potentially lose you other pretty good roles, and not to mention the huge promotional work you have to do for said projects.

- I think he would've made a great Dr Strange, I see why people will be angry with him for these comments, but also I see where he's coming from.

Waiting for all the little Kids who think CBM roles are the only thing an actor lives for to comment...One already has.

This is their job and Career, whether we like it or not, we must understand that not all actors want to spend 5-10 years in one role...some are ok with it but most aren't. When an actor gives his opinion about it, he is not saying that CBM are trash, he is just being honest about the prospect of spending all that time in one Character.

Imagine if Daniel Day Lewis stuck to only one Character.

I like the idea of Jon playing a one off character like Redford played in Winter Soldier.

Am I the only one getting tired of @kingtravis and all his so-called "scoops?" Such bullshit. Hey buddy, quote a source.

Never seen Mad Men. But didn't he has a starring role in that big baseball movie about the pitchers in India?

He should be Cable. Just make him lead one X-Force movie and appear on at least one X-Men crossover, and call it a day. (if he doesnt want to do a second XForce movie)

Well, the dude makes sense.

Being in these big franchises that can take up your career is a tough choice. I would probably say the same thing if I was in his position. Then again...he is a TV actor, he might not go far in the movie business.

@gambgel

No...please. Sam Worthington should be Cable. It'll straighten out his career to be in action movies written by capable writers.

I agree...smug SOB. Tell all the people who have done the same job day in and out, most to pay to see your crappy movies, that they're stupid for being so mundane. Or maybe they just enjoy what they do and see the value in hard work.

I don't really agree with what he's saying. Plenty of the talented superhero actors have balanced their time with superheroics and indie and non superhero flicks. Look at Scar-Jo, Jeremy Renner, Christian Bale, Chris Hemsworth. I'm sure Ben Affleck will balance his time as well and he's the same age as Hamm.

I've got a scoop, @KingTravis should move to the woods with his ballerina shoes and stop bothering everybody.

He is right the contracts for cbms can seem very exhausting and life giving for many actors especially the slightly older or more classical type of actors who are more about the art of acting and doing smaller projects and hes right that these days not having a cbm on your CV is becoming rare and in a unintentional way can get you less recognised by the GA
But that being said the dude has given nearly 10 years of his life to Mad Men but nevertheless, he's a great actor that cbms are unfortunately not going to see.
