In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time. Clark Kent/Kal-El (Henry Cavill) is a young twenty-something journalist who feels alienated by powers beyond his imagination. Transported years ago to Earth from Krypton, a highly advanced, distant planet, Clark struggles with the ultimate question 'Why am I here?' Shaped by the values of his adoptive parents Martha (Diane Lane) and Jonathan Kent (Kevin Costner), Clark discovers having extraordinary abilities means making difficult decisions. When the world is in dire need of stability, an even greater threat emerges. Clark must become a Man of Steel, to protect the people he loves and shine as the world’s beacon of hope – Superman.

During an interview in the next upcoming issue of GQ magazine, they got the chance to catch up with Henry Cavill, who will star as the american icon Superman in the next upcoming Supes film Man of Steel, directed by Zack Snyder. When asking Cavill about how money plays a part of his job, he went on to state that it's the one of the most essential elements. God, all those people who say, “Oh no, the money doesn't matter.’ Yeah, right. They’re either mad, or they’re lying. I mean, come on. “Oh no, don’t pay me anything, it’s for the arts.” I’m sorry, no. Pay me the money. I’m not doing it for charity. I’m not a nonprofit organisation. Plus it’s expensive flying back and forward to LA. You need a job that pays money.

Cavill, during the interview, recalls how he felt during his audition to portray Clark Kent/Superman. He initiall felt that he wasn't right for the role and that it wasn't coming to him. It was totally embarrassing, I wasn't in training. I wasn't feeling fit or looking good, and you put on a Lycra suit and it does not help it. I just thought, OK, I’m not getting this job. I’m fat Superman. It’ll be some really in-shape dude that when they step out they look amazing. For the full interview, be sure to catch up on the latest issue of GQ magazine coming this June, and stay tuned to CBM for more Man of Steel news as it follows.

while it makes sense what he said, I kinda wish I hadn't read it... I like it when actors are humble. I realize he wasn't showboating, but it seemed like it anyway.

I completely understand where he's coming from.....just because he factors money into his acting choices does not make him cocky, arrogant or by any means "not humble". From what i've read about him he still strikes me very much as a humble, kind man with immense respect for others. Don't forget ladies and gentlemen, at the end of the day there are bills to pay

@MrSpock

The funny thing is that not one "Marvel fanboy" said anything negative about Cavill here.

Paranoia - its the ultimate sign of butthurt.

I agree with Shua. i honestly think this (will) detract from his performance as Superman. it makes him seem like less of a fan that he openly states the importance of monitary gain for playing the character. i understand money is important but seriously superman would never talk about that in an interview.

Lmao at some of you. Time and time again Cavill has talked about how it's for the fans and hopes he's done the role justice, and thanks the fans for their support.

This right here about the money is real f***in talk. You don't think RDJ, Hemsworth, Evans, Jackson, Garfield do their work for the money??? LMAO like Cavill said, you're mad or lying.

I have full faith in Cavill, his suit is gorgeous.

Seriously, who ever designed MoS suit should get an award.

Oh and this is sexy btw.

Give them both awards lmao.

MoS and Tasm2, calling it, best CBM's ever.

Keen.

I don't have any issues with what he said. None at all.

While I feel that actors, musicians and professional athletes are WAAAY overpaid, if I was potentially putting my career on the line by accepting an iconic role that has been notoriously difficult to adapt in the past, putting hours and hours in the gym to look the part for the role, spending money flying to location and back home and putting in 10-12 hour work days then yes I would want to make sure I'm getting a nice fat check for all that effort.

Like he said, the work that they do isn't charity. Him posing in the Superman costume for pictures with children, that's a class act right there for real, but at the end of the day...this is still his job, it's how he makes a living and the hard work that actors who play these superheroes put into their roles, and how horribly fans and critics slam them if they fall short...yeah I'd be d@mn sure I get my green in the end.

"Superman wouldn't say that in an interview." You're probably right, let's go ask him how he'd handle....oh wait, that's right...he's a fictional character.

The man is just speaking the truth.

The fact that these actors put so much effort into making sure they're creating a faithful adaption for fans is admirable....but they still want the $$.

@ RobertGarlen - Go tell that to Robert "60 Million for The Avengers" Downey jr, the other members of the cast didn't make that much COMBINED. In fact, Downey jr is the only one who made a double digit salary.

Marvel trolls, [frick]ing hypocrites, I swear.

If I was playing one of the most iconic Super Heroes that had the pressure of the entire DC universe depending on my performance as this hero as I inspire the lives of many and also maintaining a physique and saying in this costume flyin to several locations. GIVE ME THAT MONEY

"I just thought, OK, I’m not getting this job. I’m fat Superman. It’ll be some really in-shape dude that when they step out they look amazing."

That self deprecating thoughts would make Cavill the perfect Clark Kent; because it's a parallel to the character, where Kent always questions whether he is the right person to be the true guardian of mankind.
I'm sure Nolan and Snyder saw that quality in him.

I think it's refreshing that he's honest about money being a factor. How many "top name" actors turn down roles because the money wasn't right. The only actors who usually take pay cuts for their art are the ones who have already made a fortune and can afford it. Trying to bash him for speaking the truth is just imbecility disguised as superiority. If he had lied and stated that it was just about the art, there still would have been disaffected trolls talking shit about his answer. Damned for his honesty and damned if he had given the "canned answer". After all, if any of you really love your job, are you going to go without a paycheck? Hell no you wouldn't! The paycheck is part of the reason that you love your "job" (without the money, it's just a [frick]ing hobby, anyway).

I'm a Marvel fanboy and I'm excited to see this as much as the other Marvel movies. Although I do have a huge bias on the Christopher Reeve Superman (grew up watching it and still love it).
