MAN OF STEEL: Zack Snyder Explains Why He Kept The Tornado Scene After Oklahoma Twister

Often after a real life tragedy or disaster, movie studios will alter or completely remove a scene from an upcoming movie if they feel it resembles these events too closely. Recently Warner Bros. reworked a cinema shootout from Gangster Squad after the horrific shootings at a midnight screening of The Dark Knight Rises in Aurora, Colo. But was there any pressure to remove a devastating twister sequence from Man Of Steel after an EF5 tornado hit the Oklahoma City suburb of Moore on May 20, killing 24 people? According to Zack Snyder is was never discussed. "He’s changed by those events,” the director told Entertainment Weekly. “If anything, we feel like our Superman has a connection — not to make light of it — to the kind of grief that happens during those kinds of natural disasters. Also, in a sad way, even Superman can’t change that.” And what does Superman himself think? Actor Henry Cavill added, “I hope that everyone who can salvage things can salvage things, grieve if they need to grieve, move on from stuff and repair and rebuild, if they have the opportunity. I can’t even imagine what it’s like.” What do you guys think? Should the scene have been altered or removed entirely? Sound off below.

There's no need to alter or delete it. It was filmed way before the tornado hit Oklahoma City. Also, it's not like it inspired someone to go shoot a bunch of people. Tornado's are natural disasters that happen a lot.
Sorry for those who died, but there's no need to alter the movie.

Apparently so, im glad Warner isn't caving in on it like they did with the Gangster Squad cinema shoot out scene.

It's a tragedy, but it's not like it's glorifying it. Clark tries to help people and really, that's an inspiring message. The emotional impact is going to be even higher now, in a good way.

Glad they didn't change anything. All kinds of things happen in the world and art imitates life. I wouldn't expect my misfortune to prompt film makers to change their films.

It's because Snyder isnt a pussy whose willing to alter his art because he's afraid of offending a small group of overly sensitive people. We live in too much fear these days. What happened in Ok was a tragedy but do we really have to ruin what we do have left out of fear that a few people will complalin?

I saw Man of Steel this week and without giving anything away, the tornado scene is a critical part of the movie - they couldn't have removed it without making a relatively big change to the plot unless they just changed it to a different type of natural disaster, at which point we'd still be having the same conversation.

Now that you have seen the movie I have two questions:

1. Is Man of Steel in your opinion the best comic book movie of all time, if not the Top 5?

2. Do you think it will make as much domestically as The Dark Knight Rises or Iron Man 3??

I'm not comparing the tornado to the shootings by the way, just mentioned that to illustrate how studios will get skittish about stuff like this. Obviously a natural disaster is completely different, but still, you will have some people that were directly involved that might not have too pleasant a time watching something like that on screen afterwards..not suggesting it should be changed, just saying.

It's nice gesture, but a film maker can't modify their movie everytime something bad happens in this world. That'd be ridiculous and costly. Natural disasters happen all the time. If it had been a terrorist attack or mass shooting, I think everyone would stand behind that being removed. I understood why they took the twin towers scene from Spiderman, but man would I love to have seen that in the movie. Now that the towers are nearly rebuilt, Raimi should do a directors cut and add that scene back in as a tribute.

simply no because then no movie can be filmed since many events resembling movies happen in real life as well, even in gangster squad I thought what Warner bros did was very unnecessary.

@Khan... imagine your neighborhood that consists about 5 blocks of housing development leveled/flattened overnight. Where you once cannot see outside your window because your friends house is blocking your view can now see about a mile in all direction no matter where you stand or how you look.

A movie should never alter it's content because of some events that took place in real life. Movies and real life are not the same, leave them separated.

If the events of a movie affect you in the real life, NEWS FLASH, the problem doesn't come from the movie, it comes from you.

Those were sad events but it was a natural disaster and those as a human race have no control over at all. No reason to take out that scene of the movie.

I pray for the people who was affected by the Oklahoma storm. But when something like this happens and a similar movie comes out, there is no reason for movies to change the scenes in my opinion. All movies with violence or death have something that has affected someone personal life in a similar way but studios dont stop making movies with violence or death in them.

The world's gone mad. Why should someone change a movie after a real life event when it's just a movie? The tragedies that happen are awful, and I feel sorry for anyone affected by them, but if anything were to happen to me, I wouldn't expect them to change a movie over it.
People are too sensitive nowadays. If they don't like it, don't watch it? Surely that's the most logical thing to do....

I was against Spidey taking out the scene where he webs a helicopter between the Twin Towers. And I think that may be the worst thing I've witnessed.
I just think folk should be able to separate real life from film

But I do hope people don't find it offensive. It would be one thing if done lighthearted or even in a commedic form but they're not

i'm from Oklahoma and i agree with him. also, lets be real. people die everyday in the hood from gun violence. guilty, innocent, young, old, people are shot and killed all the time. so should filmakers edit out every gunfight because of this? hell nah, art imitates life so people should always expect parallels between fiction and reality. tragedies are no exception.

Swim with sharks, you may get eaten. Live in tornado alley, it may get windy. Make a movie, don't worry about fish, wind or offending idiots.

OK I am actually from Oklahoma and I do not live that far from Moore. People act like this is the first tornado that ever happen. Also FYI. My house has been hit by a tornado as well before.

Look what happen in Moore was tragic and horrible. I know i seen the destruction. But thats what happens when you live in Tornado valley.

That what happens when you live in Oklahoma. You deal with Tornadoes hitting your house. Also not to talk ill of the ones who died but every spring when it tornado season we loose people.

Moores been hit by a tornado before as well. Not once but twice before. This time it caused more damage but the last two i believe took more lives.

I guess what I trying to say is that while what happen here is horrible and in no way do i want to take away what happen here like it was not a bad thing but stuff like this has happen before. We will bounce back like we did before and rebuild.

The Media is not helping either. What wrong with people today. Everyone has to over react all the time. That why people died in El Reno and other parts of Central Oklahoma cause people over reacted. The panic and died. It sad to say but it is a fact.

This article to me should of never been written.

I dont think film should be changed due to certain events, unless its making a mockery of the tragedy. I dont think the theater shooting scene in Gangsta Squad shoulda been removed, causing a pushback of release. If I remember correctly, didnt Mickey Cowen really shoot up a theater? I agree that people are hypersensitive and expect everything to be changed so their feelings arent hurt, when they shouldnt be in the first place.

@Hulk2008 - here are you're answers:

@duncboy

Now that you have seen the movie I have two questions:

1. Is Man of Steel in your opinion the best comic book movie of all time, if not the Top 5?
Answer; Absolutely. I won't say it's a perfect movie, but it's definitely on par with Batman Begins, Iron-Man 1, Thor, Captain America, etc. I don't want to give anything away or sway anyone's opinion one way or another, but I will say this - this movie has more action than any movie I've ever seen. I literally cannot think of a movie where there was more action than Man of Steel. I will also say I was slightly shocked by the last scene that includes with Zod and Superman - not because it was far fetched or anything, but I was surprised the movie makers went the way they did. I really don't want to say anything more for fear of giving something away though.

2. Do you think it will make as much domestically as The Dark Knight Rises or Iron Man 3??
-Yes, the movie is coming out in 3D/Imax-3D as well, so ticket prices will be higher and because it's Superman, more people will want to go see it (probably). Even though I've already seen the film, I still plan on seeing it at midnight.

@Hulk2008 - I should have been more specific with your first question - I would rank Man of Steel my top choice of all those movies I listed.
