EDITORIAL: Smallville Finale not good enough...really?

A lot of People seem to think this Finale was terrible. Here is what I think...

(First piece of work on the site so apologies if it is of low quality)

Now I know we all like to bash Smallville here, even the fans like me. However since Smallville's final episode I have had to contain my need to laugh at a lot of people in the comments section because of what can only be described as ridiculous complaining. Here is how I see it.

The Suit (of course I had to start with the suit)

We Have had many views of the Suit throughout this season to 'hint' at what was obviously always going to happen. Currently we have a lot, and I mean a LOT, of people complaining about just having Superman in CGI and the fact you only see Clark wearing the classic \S/ after a shirt rip but let me bring you back to before the finale aired. How many of you said "we will only see a shirt rip and that will be it" or "we will only see a blur flying in the sky why do people think otherwise"?. Now we got the shirt rip that you all expected, we got the blur flying in the sky...but we also go some CGI shots of Superman in action, Superman actually doing something. Thats a hell of a lot more than anyone expected.

The point I make is sure, we didn't get a full body shot of Tom in the suit but hey! we got a hell of a lot more than we thought to begin with.

The name 'Superman'

This one is real quick...Chloe(damned stupid Chloe...god I hate her)says "And that is how the boy became Superman". Boom! Superman! perfect? No. In the Finale? Yes.

Lex's send off

I hear some complaints that Lex did not get enough screen time, his bald cap looked ridiculous and the mind wipe was a cop out, now whilst I agree with the mind wipe being a cop out (I think it would have been an intresting dynamic if Lex new Clark Kent was Superman, but he only wanted to harm Superman because Clark Kent would not satisfy his ego) I disagree on the others.

Michael Rosenbaum was only on set for a day that we all knew prior, we also all knew prior to the episode the he would be wearing a bald cap. So why did you expect his head to look the same as previous seasons and for him to have a lot of air time? The old bald cap did look bad in picture I will admit but in action I barely even noticed it and Lex was only there to set up their rivalry in the future and as a nod to his part in the show to the fans, he was never an important part of the episode.

I think I have covered everything I wanted to cover. For the show this I feel was a great Final episode, and whilst everyone is entitled to their opinion, most of you need yo really stop complaining about what you said would happen to begin with.

Great first article, but you really didn't pull up the points of why people hated. You did defend the suit pretty, well, but most were angry at:

1. The short Clark vs Darkseid fight.
2. Lex was a clone
3. How quick Clark adjusted to being Superman
4. Clarks Delayed wedding.

People are retards...it's that simple. But you can't go by this site cause everyone here hates Smallville. Just look around the internet, most people loved it (I just finished reading IGN's awesome review).

Everyone was always expecting the final shot to be Welling tearing off the shirt exposing the S, which is EXACTLY what they gave us....except they gave us much more!

And yes, I understand everyone wanted to see Welling in full costume (cause I wanted to see it more than anyone else) but instead they used the SAME EXACT CGI from Superman Returns! It was just Welling's face over Routh's! That movie cost like a billion dollars to make and they used it on a CW television series!

@manymade- Was the Lex in the finale a clone? It's confusing...

I knew the body parts were cloned. But the mind is all from the original Lex and the way Clark spoke to him and the way Lex himself was talking, he seemed like the original.

Nice article. You know, I commented on another article venting my Smallville frustrations and then actually felt bad for doing so. I saw the finale again yesterday and yes, I loved it. Like you said, they gave us much more than we expected. And for those upset at all the CGI, we saw Superman save Air Force One and fly up to Lois by the window. How kick ass was THAT?!??!!

Well said, dude. Finale worked for me.

Lex wasnt a clone. He just had cloned body parts. It was the original lex with donor parts

I liked the whole finale except 2 parts. I hated that they wiped Lex's memory and i hated that they didnt wipe Lois's memory. They should have switched the 2.

mbomb22 - 5/17/2011, 2:08 PM
@Killjoy-they had to wipe Lex's memory, simply because of the fact that he isnt supposed to know Clark is Superman. I like that they didnt wipe lois's, but what i dont get is why, 7 years later, when they are getting married, Clack acts like they arent together, calling her Ms. Lane. that was kinda akward to me. and i hated that Chloe was reading the story to her son, simply because (and i know that it is just a comic book character) it made the whole 10 seasons seem fake, like it never actually happened. over all, i liked it, and CGI Superman was better than no Superman at all, but those things didnt make sense

I am a huge Smallville fan but something was just wrong with the final 3 seasons. If you compare them to the rest of the show, you can easily see how bad the stories and lack of action were compared to the other seasons.

It is too bad the creators and people who ran the show for the first 7 seasons could not be the ones to finish it off.

I know that the show had budget cuts but that is no excuse for the crappy writing and horrible ideas. You could probably pull somebody off the street who could have written a better finale than the one we got.

It is although they intentionally wanted to mess up everything that the fans wanted from the show. I don't understand it. I blame the executive producers, they are idiots.

You forgot to mention the fight with Darkseid in the finale...I mean lack thereof.

So, what you are saying is that we have to be thankful for getting what we got? BULLSHIT. We deserve better.

Your whole article was about justifying all the bad writing in the finale.

Im not a hater, im a smallville fan, but the finale was bad. We never saw a full zoom in shot of clark in the costume, but we have to be thankful and understanding with the writers for the cgi swit scenes, yeah right.

They got the brilliant idea of wipping 7 years of memory from lex. Wow, how smart and generous, cause Lex Luthor from the comics wasnt supposed to know Clark is Superman, then why the hell they didn't do that with Louis knowing his secret and Oliver marrying Chloe. Stick and stay true to your version and dont FRICK off your own characters for that kind of garbage dumbass excuses.

Invest 7 seasons of their lifes to create a new and fresh version of the Lex Luthor to rape it in the last 15 min., yeah AWESOME FINALE dude.

Plain and simple it was rubbish, rushed and disrespectful to every fan who stuck with it for 10 years. They couldn't even be botherd to make there own suit i mean come on it doesn't cost that much i can buy a half decent one from the fancy dress shop up the road for 40 quid.
BahWeee
BahWeee - 5/18/2011, 7:43 AM
So many here don't understand the one fact that makes it work. It's not just a prequel to the comics. It's a retelling. A new mythos grounded in certain concrete that they wouldn't break. They didn't need the full suit. We ALL - ALL - know he's wearing it, and we all know what it looks like. It was unnecessary.

OK....who's next? Bring on the complaints. Most of them are just that. The way WE would have done it. The threat of them doing it wrong didn't keep us from watching.

I didn't mention the fight with Darkseid because I agree that was lame. I think what happened with Lex was it WAS a clone but Darksied put the real Lex inside so like a new body for an old mind??
AC1
AC1 - 5/18/2011, 11:43 AM
@Manymade agree with points 1 and 4, but Lex wasn't a clone, Darkseid resurrected him and then transplanted his organs with cloned organs and Lionel's heart. And as for Clark adjusting fast... he's had ten years, did you think it would end with him being a bumbling version of Superman who had no clue what he's doing?
Ranger14
Ranger14 - 5/18/2011, 1:13 PM
^^^ Yeah..I was kind of chuckling over the comment that Clark adjusted too fast. He's adjusted and I thought they did a good job this last episode showing why he was ready to make the step and do so without reservations.

BahWeee@ Exactly. Look how many justify the new X-Men movie by saying it is a different universe and re-imagining of the X-Men and that is okay, but it wasn't okay to do that with Superman and Smallville?

I don't think it would have mattered how they did it, people would complain and gripe either way.

Look they didn't have the budget to get all this spoiled whiney ass bs everyone is complaining about and even if they did people would say they messed it up somehow.

I think for a TV series they did a pretty good job. I wasnt expecting a lot of dramatic fight scenes or Superman doing a whole lot, and that's what we got.

For the people that have been watching the show for 10 year i believe a better finale was deserved..CW didnt give a [fri]ck about how the show ended as long as it ended in my opinion

its next to impossible to make a satisfying series finale for shows that have been on that long. its been proven over and over again.

The Sopranos, The Shield, Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek TNG, friggin' Seinfeld for god's sake.

The only difference is those shows were all very good over the years. Even the biggest Smallville fans admit that it had huge problems over the years and wasn't always good, so I don't know why its so surprising that this sucked...

The Lex in the finale was the original Lex. Where did anyone get the idea that he was a clone?

The finale left me wanting more SUPERMAN... but not a new movie... I want to see Tom and Erica more =) I don't care about Henry Cavill's Superman, or Tom not wearing the suit, so that there won't be any comparison. IF that was the reason.

I care about this show, I've been watching for years! This Lois and THIS CLARK, and wanting to see HIM become Superman!!! I don't care that it was called "Smallville"... it was called Dawson's Creek, but the characters MOVED ON after High School and Clark SHOULD HAVE too! He should have stayed in and FINISHED college... and made NEW friends! It is called One Tree Hill, but they have all moved away, come back, got married, had kids, etc.

This shows MAJOR problem is not that he didn't fly or wear tights... it's that they kept Clark STUCK in a high school mentality, kept going BACK and FORTH with a girl he was enamored with in HS, for far too many YEARS, and being told what to do by his HS bff. Rather than letting HIM mature, change and GROW! Season 9, was the first time he started to break out on his own! However in S10, he was back to RE-learning the SAME lessons from years ago!!

A shame really! This show had SO MUCH untaped potential... with Clark, Lois, Lex, Jimmy, etc. *sigh*
