My Thoughts on the Smallville Finale!

Haters gonna wait. But here are my thoughts on the Smallville finale!

Ok...I will admit. At first I felt pretty let-down by the Smallville finale. I really didn't like seeing Tom Welling CGI'd as Superman. That being said...I want to clear a few things up here...

1) Smallville accomplished what they set out to do- They gave us a 'Superman' yes it wasn't exactly the Superman everyone here wanted...but at least we got more than just a lame 10 second shirt rip deal. We got to some Superman action in this.

2) Lex was a total badass. It cannot be denied that THIS was his shining moment on the show. I mean, we got a bit of the Superman/Lex Luthor trashtalk which was cool. Clark saying something like "I'll always be there to stop you". and I like Lex's smug response. But I forgot what he said but I do remember it was pretty cool.

3) Darkseid actually had a role in this which was more than i expected. Originally the way Kelly and Brian talked it actually seemed like Darkseid wouldn't even appear. Cool to see him physically harming Lionel and actually speaking which was decent.

4) Lex killing Tess made me happy. But I guess that could also group with reason#2 lol, eh...oh well!

5) Apokolips looked awesome. I don't care what anyone says, that burning hellfire planet looked just as I hoped it would!

There, those are my reasons why I didn't think the finale was as bad as people make it out to be. Yes it wasn't what many wanted or expected...but it is what it is. And Smallville at least kept Superman alive and well in the modern-audiences mindset. That's what is most important. Plus Smallville at least went where the Superman movies never bothered to go- they brought in a good portion of Superman's villains (yeah watered down but still at least gave them their debuts in live form) and we got to see the Legion of Doom and JSA/JLA. All on a rather tiny t.v budget too!

And this was epic. I know it was a small little easter egg but it was still nice to finally see.

Now I know a lot of people are going to bash the living hell out of me for this. But if there are any comments left about Routh being better than Welling because of the finale I will delete them because let's lay it to rest already- Welling wasn't really Superman. Smallville WAS NEVER about Superman. It was about Clark Kent. PERIOD.

I'm happy Smallville gave us what they did at least.

Now let the hater comments commence. But I stand by what I said.

2. Welling
3. Daly (animated)
4. Routh
5. George Reeve (his clark was good for the 50's)
Last if this has to be an option - Cain

Well, I got to watch the finale high and it was very emotional for me. As I watched the physical manifestation of Clark & Lois's love captured on film, I was blown away. As a longtime Superman fan this was how I always felt they would be. But then, something happened. I had a feeling. The kind of feeling someone who has grown up with the show. When Smallville first premiered, I was 20. Fresh out of High School. But I still had those High School emotions. Soon after leaving I was wishing I could be back. I had finally felt something only an adult could feel. The death of my childhood. A final goodbye. Watching Smallville was somewhat of reliving my high school days. But then something happened. Clark had long graduated from High School and I felt myself wanting him to become Superman. Every season was another letdown. And I found myself being an angry fan. I found myself hating the fact that Clark couldn't at least fly. I then became angry at the changes to some of the stories of Superman. The origins that were being changed that had not been changed in generations. But this season, I had hope. We knew this would be the last. We would finally see Clark fly. Lex Luthor return. And finally, after 10 years, see Clark become Superman. When Clark appeared in the Fortress in his mind, and Jor-El telling him to embrace his Smallville history, I finally got it. Smallville has, and always has been, the story of a young Clark Kent. We saw the death of Clark Kent, and the birth of Superman. Clark Kent and Kal-El combined. And I felt totally fulfilled. It was never about Clark flying. Was never about the costume. It was about the journey. It was about, Smallville. We the fans have grown along side with Clark Kent/Superman. Tom Welling has earned the mantle of Superman...

I was hoping to see "Superman" introduced to the world or even mentioned. Instead, Welling copped-out like I thought he might.

I thought it was a good episode but I'm still a bit dissapointed that there wasn't a still of him completely in the suit, kept thinking come on stop teasing us and it never happened

I thought the episode was great and there were a ton of Easter Eggs like the quick flash of the JLA Watchtower logo on the computer screen. I know that some people might disagree with me on this, but I liked the Bike Jacket and Black Superman costume a hell of a lot more than the Superman Returns suit, so I really only cared about seeing Darkseid in the finale. Darkseid wasn't really what I expected, but honestly I don't really think I paid close enough attention this season or I would have realized that he would need a human host to inhabit.

I just hope that Mortal Kombat is successful and it paves the way for a DC superhero live action web series. Until then, I can look forward to Green Lantern this summer, Batman next year, and Superman in 2013 for my DC fix. After seeing as many heroes as I got on Smallville though, I am satisfied, for now...

The episode was ok. I loved at the end, when we got to see on the TV President Lex.

I agree with this article totally. I can't believe Smallville is getting so much hate. At least we go to see a version of Superman on the small screen for ten years. The finale tied everything together so nicely. We got to see Superman which I didn't think was going to happen, even if it was CGI. Remember this was a weekly TV show not a big budget multi million dollar movie. I loved this finale. Now what will suck is come September, there is no Superman related show and we have to wait a year and a half until the Man of Steel move.

People also bitch a lot about how Welling was CGI'd the whole time but fu*k it who cares. They don't realize Routh was also CGI'd during much of Superman Returns. During the plane rescue scene he was CGI'd for most of it and during much of his flight sequences he was CGI'd...and that was for a big budget film too!

Welling really did wear the suit for a bit (observe shirt rip pic above) just not during the flight sequences...who cares???!

Welling is 10 times the Superman Routh could ever hope to be!!!
LP4
LP4 - 5/14/2011, 10:43 AM
Plus Welling only wore the Superman suit for like...6 minutes compared to Routh who wore it for a nearly 3hr film. But see...even during the nearly 3hrs Routh was Superman his boring Superman barely inspired anyone. He was so damn bland!!!

At least Welling during his few minutes of wearing the suit he actually made lots of people happy to see his ascension to SUPERMAN!!!
Knightstalker
Knightstalker - 5/14/2011, 10:51 AM
Dude, Welling never wore the suit. I can rip my own shirt open and expose the Superman logo T-shirt underneath as can anybody that has one. They should have shown him coming in for a landing in full suit and Lois calling him Superman for the first time. That would have beeen a better Finale than the one we got.

I agree completely LP4, both my sister and gf were crying throught the finale. We got to see Darkseid phisically, who cares that he was cgi?
They didnt have the budget to make a 10 minute fight between supes and the 9 ft tall 400 lb brute. Who cares?
They did their best with what they could. I for one loved the ending.
And Superman didn't look so small in my 65 in. 3D tv :p

Supes17 - 5/14/2011, 10:55 AM
@Knightstalker
I don't think that was Welling's fault.
I think that the corporate jackasses messed it up.

People need to quit bitching. Its a TV SHOW, not a 3 hour long film

@Knighstalker- Dude I totally agree that would have been a way better finale finish!! But ah well...I take what they give ;P

@Superman17- Yeah dude, Darkseid was [frick]ing awesome!!!! Who cares about the cgi, i mean...Hulk was CGI'd for his movies. I figure same should go for Darkseid anyway. ;D

And I agree, I don't blame Welling. Yeah he didn't wanna wear the suit. but he's only an actor, he can't really tell the producers or directors what to do. They're the ones that pull the strings NOT Welling.

I admit...I'm not a big Welling-fan. But I definitely preferred his little stint as Superman over Routh's nearly 3hr long catastrophe in the role.

The only things i really disliked was the fact that Darkseid took over Lionel's body, seemed like a cheap cop-out to me. I'm sick of them rehashing the possession stories.

Also I hated how easily Oliver took out the unholy trinity with only 1 arrow each.

Other than that, i thought the finale was ok. Again- Lex was a total badass and great to see him back in the role! Darkseid when he DID appear in his own self he was pretty cool. And Apokolips was [frick]ing awesome!

@Griffy- Yeah thanks man. I've had my issues with Smallville but seriously I'm trying to be as fair as possible here. There were certainly things I would have done differently with the finale...but it is what it is y'know. No use complaining about it, nothing will change. Besides those 5 reasons i posted above WERE the highlights of the finale imho.

Ah well, I respect Smallville for going where the movies never bothered to go.

@LP4 nicely done. Yeah, the lex and clark scene was great. Clark: "I'll always be there to stop you. Always."
Lex: "Oh i'm counting on it."
And I'm glad Darkseid actually spoke.

I filmed most of the episode last night haha

I also loved that scene in the barn between CLark and his dad and mom. And the music was amazing.

@JDUKE- Oh yeah man, that scene was really heartwarming and sweet. Made me feel bad that Pa Kent died.

:(

Overall the finale wasn't all THAT bad. I don't know, I liked it. Tied everything together man.

I just hated that Lex had to lose his memory of the first 7 seasons of Smallville dammit, LOL. But I guess he had to so he wouldn't know who Superman is...but still...lol
JDUKE25
JDUKE25 - 5/14/2011, 5:55 PM
@LP4 Yeah, they had to remind us of Summerholt one last time lol. I was glad to see Lex axe Tess but it was kinda nice to see Tess beat Lex. Lex: "I'm saving you from becoming me." Tess: "Clark already did that." BURN!! haha

But that next shot of LuthorCorp and the letters falling making it say "LexCorp" was freakin incredible. I had a feeling LexCorp would come in to play at some point in the episode.
LP4
LP4 - 5/14/2011, 5:56 PM
One thing i did like though was how while Clark flashed through his memories of his time in Smallville and used them to finally accept his destiny as Superman. Lex had lost all of his memories of his time in Smallville.

Kinda funny how opposite it was with those two. Similar themes...but different too. Clark embracing his memories while Lex loses his.
JDUKE25
JDUKE25 - 5/14/2011, 5:57 PM
OH!!! and i'm soooo glad that when he finally started to fly, he had his arms out in front of him instead of by his side like he had them before.

LP4 - 5/14/2011, 5:58 PM
@JDUKE- True, loved that little reference to LexCorp! Pretty cool episode.

I think Lex, Darkseid and Apokolips were the highlights for me. I also loved watching Clark finally fly upward through the FOS while changing into Superman. That was freaking epic and you could totally see a hint of the yellow "S" on his cape! Glad they decided to fix that lame SR suit by giving it back its yellow "S"
LP4

@JDUKE- Yeah that's true, when he blasted into Lionel/Darkseid, he did the traditional Superman hands out-front. Really nice.

Oh and President Luthor was a really nice touch too!

JDUKE25
JDUKE25 - 5/14/2011, 6:05 PM
@LP4 definitely. The S on his cape is what makes it unique and his. Anybody can wear a red cape, but only Superman can wear one with the S on the back.

For sure. Smallville was always good at throwing in little teasers like that and this

I'll always love that line from season 4 from Chloe after Clark wins the big game and she says he's gonna be like a superhero around school and he says he's gonna make time for the torch. And then she says, "Wow. Superhero and journalist. What are the odds"

@LP4- Welling actually had a bit more input, as he's been Executive Producer all season.

That being said, I wish he wasn't so resistant to wear the suit. It would've been cool to actually see what we've all been speculating all year. If even for just a second.

Thank God that Rosenbaum caved. It wouldn't have ended the same without HIS version of Lex.

I thought it would have also been cool to see the whole JLA in the finale, or at least in the episode before. I mean they had a cameo of the Legion of Doom, so it would have been nice to see some more conflict. I'm sure a lot of it had to do with budget and scheduling, but it still would've been cool.

All in all, I was only slightly disappointed with the finale, but Smallville will always be one of my favorite shows. It's a bittersweet departure, and I feel it was time to end. At least I have the complete DVD set (well, minus Season 10 of course) to revisit that quaint meteor-infected town that bore us one of the best tellings of the worlds greatest heroes.

LONG LIVE SUPERMAN!

Ok so we were lead to believe that there would be this big blur unveiling to the people but this didn't happen. I was hoping Clark would fly back down after stoping the Apokolips and introduce himself in his flashy new suit as superman! As for the suit we didn't even get a good shot of him wearing it, it was only head or cape shots that were really shown up close.

Man I got really depressed reading all the hate right after the finale aired but the next day I actually got to watch it and I was blown away with the finale, it tied smallville together and ended it so well, could there have been more superman yes but that is what is so great about it everyone is mad because we all want more superman, so smallville did its job.

I felt like this episode made all of smallville as a whole better the way it included the memories and themes from the best days of the show really was awesome.

Good points @LP4 I agree with your pro's all that stuff was cool. I am still too stoked about how complete the finale made the show to feel any negativity towards it.

I hope that once this show is off the air it becomes more popular now that there are no expectations and speculations to deal with, maybe smallville will become something of a cult following. Because as a whole this show is one complete journey with ups and downs and all sorts of character to enjoy even after it is gone.

Two major things that came outta the Smallville finale: Welling became Superman and SR got its ass kicked by the low budget TV show.
