In Smallville, Allison Mack played Clark Kent's best friend Chloe Sullivan and was the very definition of "the girl next door." Little did we know that, behind the scenes, the actor was allegedly involved in NXIVM, a sex cult that's believed to have been behind all manner of horrific crimes.
Mack is said to have been responsible for recruiting new members to the group and has previously been accused of attempting to enlist her Smallville co-stars. Currently serving four years in prison, stories continue to come out about the actor, and we've now heard from Lois Lane herself, Erica Durance.
Talking on Michael Rosenbaum's Inside Of You podcast (via Screen Rant), Durance revealed that she didn't have the warmest of relationships with Mack, though that didn't stop her from going on a recruitment drive. Durance was, and still is, a beauty, so you can see why she was of interest to NXIVM.
"I said the idea of sharing all of my personal secrets brings up a visceral reaction in me. She didn’t bring it up until the latter part of the seasons," the actor said of how Mack first approached her about joining the cult. "We had an interesting relationship, me and Allison. I think that she felt like she wanted to like me. I think that she wanted people to see that she wanted to like me but I don’t think having me there was something that was great for her. Maybe it came off as her being threatened but I found there was too many little idiosyncrasies that would happen."
"I would walk away and was like, ‘I thought we got along today.’ Then I would go home and be like, ‘Well, that was mean.’ Nobody would ever see it," she continued. "There were all sorts of those little things that would go on…I think she liked being in that position of knowledge and wanting to recruit. I think she really believed in it but I didn’t really trust her motivation when it came to me."
Thankfully, Durance was spared from having any sort of involvement with NXIVM, which she later credited to having a clash of personalities with Mack and the fact that they had a superficial relationship.
The belief is that the Lois Lane actor will reprise the role in Tom Welling and Rosenbaum's planned animated follow-up, though we're guessing Chloe will have vanished from Smallville by the time it materialises. Durance has remained close to the DC Universe, playing Alura Zor-El in Supergirl, though the possibility of her reprising the role of the intrepid Daily Planet reporter continues to intrigue fans.
