SMALLVILLE Star Tom Welling Says He's Working On An Animated Continuation Of The CW Series

This is the first we've heard of this, but actor Tom Welling has revealed that he's working on an animated series with Michael Rosenbaum that will bring their Smallville characters "back to life."

In news that's sure to make Smallville fans very happy, Tom Welling has revealed that he's working on an animated continuation of the CW series with costar Michael Rosenbaum.

While nothing has been made official yet (expect an imminent announcement), Welling spilled the beans during a Cameo video which has since been shared on Twitter.

"Michael Rosenbaum and I are actually working on an animated series to bring those characters back to life, and use as many of the original cast members as possible," said the actor in his message. "Don't tell anybody, though. It's a secret, we're still working on it."

Welling did reprise the role of Clarke Kent for the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover event, but it was a very brief appearance and he didn't actually suit-up as Superman. Fans have been hoping for some kind of follow-up that would also feature Rosenbaum's Lex Luthor ever since the show ended back in 2011, and this mysterious animated project is probably the closest we'll get to a revival.

It sounds like things are only in the very early stages of development, and we have no idea if this will be a a new DC animated series for HBO Max or something else entirely. Whatever the case may be, there's a chance somebody somewhere is not too pleased about Welling letting the cat out of the bag here!

We'll hopefully gave more details to share soon, but for now let us know what you make of this news in the comments down below.

Great! Love the smallville universe.

The season 11 comics were a halfway decent continuation. They’re considered continuity too as the shows writers penned a lot of them.

Amazing news. With Superman & Lois' greatness and now this, it's a great time to be a Superman fan. Always loved this show and the cast.

@0bstreperous - 9 was a surprisingly solid season

@Twenty23Three - It was, the issue I had with the show by then was that we were seeing rehashes/recons of concepts from earlier seasons.

@Twenty23Three - 9 was the best season, imo. The stuff with Zod was amazing.

@AtakanKaratas - I remember being on this site back then, all the hype seeing Clark in his Neo/Porto suit, Rumours of people at comic con being shown a smallville version of the final suit that never happened. Not to forget the JSA two parted… good times

I just started watching this show for the first time. I love the whole Superboy angle in Smallville. I'm not sure I'm going to finish the series because I heard it dips in quality, but I'm enjoying it now

In my opinion, Seasons 1-3 and 8-10 are very good. Seasons 4-7 is a rollcaster of ups and downs: the Clark-Lex-Lana triangle dragged way too much.

Everything up until Rosenbaum left i loved. After he left, the show lost me a little. But if this happens i will for sure be watching.

Will it continue on from the comics? Or will it be a retelling if those stories? Or will it ignore it all?

I'm hoping they adapt the comics season 11 but inject some more small ville originality. Man Rosenbaum really wants back in as Lex. To be fair he did the role total justice, the material written just wasn't the best.

@Jaykay21 - Smallville Lex (particularly early seasons Lex) is about the best Lex material out there to work with

@Nightwing1015 - oh agreed! early seasons Lex were great, especially with the dynamic of them being friends. that was new at that point.

but as it went on with all the body swaps and memory wipes it became silly, but that's not just for Lex.

I was also ok with Spacey's iteration.

I enjoyed all the Smallville episodes minus the last episode of the series was such a let down. Turned me off CW superhero shows.

Show was great until the main EPs/Michael Rosenbaum left.. Although it did seem to start to dip a bit in quality once it moved the CW for season 6. My biggest gripe was for whatever reason when they stopped filming on location at the farm starting in S8, it just took me out of it, everything always taking place either in the farm or in the house on a soundstage made it feel like soap opera. I’ve never been so disappointed in my TV viewing life as I was when I watched the S8 finale and the Doomsday fight lasted about 45sec. They had been teasing it the WHOLE season.. and the stupid thing with killing Jimmy then saying his little brother is the REAL Jimmy Olsen.. ugh, so dissapointing.

@whalers - i take that back, S6 was still solid. They did Green Arrow awesome and the Justice League episode was the most epic episode of anything on network TV.

Seasons 1-3 will always be my favourite, particularly 3.

From there on the show was up and down, 6-8 were the low point for me though there is some great episodes in those seasons.

This is super cool. I always thought it would be cool if they did a DC animation movie for Smallville. Wonder if they ever approached Tom about voicing Superman in anything.
Nightwing1015
Nightwing1015 - 6/24/2021, 7:46 AM
@Steel86 - Honestly, Tom will always be my favourite Superman but I think the weakest aspect of his poytral is his voice. Not quite the same tone as other versions.
Steel86
Steel86 - 6/24/2021, 1:53 PM
@Nightwing1015 - I do agree but he didn't really change his voice any in the show other than when he played different versions of himself. Maybe with him doing voice work he could hero it up for Supes and then be himself for Clark.

I'm sure fans will be happy but I have no legitimate interest in this I rather see a Lynda Carter animated continuation.

Honestly this is the best news I've heard on this site for a while. Been wanting this for years! Really hope we get some sort of official confirmation of this soon.
