SUPERMAN: LEGACY Director James Gunn Appears To Confirm Plans For Krypto The Superdog To Appear

Superman: Legacy director James Gunn has seemingly confirmed plans for Krypto the Superdog to be part of the 2025 reboot, though don't expect Guardians of the Galaxy star Chris Pratt to land the role!

With Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 now in theaters, the movie's press tour has ended and filmmaker James Gunn can concentrate fully on his responsibilities running DC Studios and helming Superman: Legacy.

There's a huge amount of excitement to see what he does with the Man of Steel, and it sounds like we should definitely expect an appearance from Krypto the Superdog. While joking about offering Star-Lord actor Chris Pratt the role, Gunn essentially confirmed the beloved super-powered canine's presence in the 2025 reboot, news we're sure will be welcomed by fans.

"I was hoping to cast you as Krypto The Superdog," he said. "You could do motion capture on set and walk around on your hands and knees, but you can't talk."

The apparent confirmation comes at the end of the video below when the interviewer suggests he just landed a "scoop" in learning about plans for Krypto. Of course, if you've been paying attention, this isn't a surprise as the dog-loving director has expressed interest in bringing Krypto back to our screens on a number of occasions.

Krypto being introduced in Superman: Legacy will likely set up an even larger role for the character in the DCU. He was a huge part of the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic book and, as an upcoming movie shares a name with that popular run by Tom King, odds are Krypto will be just as important on-screen there as he was on the page.

DC Studios is expected to have a presence at this year's San Diego Comic-Con, and while it's too soon for a first look at many of these upcoming projects, we'll do doubt still get some big news at the annual event.

Superman: Legacy is set to be released in theaters on July 11. 2025.

And THIS is why Gunn is the right guy to do a DC universe.
No character is beneath him and he understands that not taking yourself too seriously is the best approach to fun comic book films.

Sure, TDK took itself very seriously and there’s definitely a time and place for that, but that’s not a template for an entire genre of films. Snyder was too one dimensional. He could have never made films distinct from each other. He only knew how to brood.

@HulkisHoly - it’s also Batman who takes himself very seriously, like you said everyone isn’t supposed to be edgelords

@HulkisHoly - there is a difference between taking things seriosuly and being stupid. having a superdog is stupid. perhaps a grounded but optimistic story rather than random tropes.

@iceballsreborn - Krypto isn't stupid, just look at Titans' depiction. Never comes across as stupid.
It's also expanding the Superman family, just like Bold n Brave will expand the Bat family.
DC either do it now and introduce all their amazing supporting characters or slowly build on it over the next ten years plus.
Given that they're already a decade behind in developing a cohesive universe then bring it on.

@HulkisHoly - Snyder would have adapted Krypto... as an alien Kryptonian canine.

@Repian - I LIKE THIS CONCEPT ! I would have been ok with them making krypto look more alien than the typical earth dog. I like the wings here as well and the spikes on the tail.

Not that it won't happen, but this is very clearly a joke. He's saying Chris Pratt will play him on his hands and knees the whole time and never talking ffs.

I know it's kind of silly on its face. But my dog, in his prime, would have made an Awesome Krypto. He's a rottweiler/ dalmatian mix, big and white and looks just like Krypto.

Good. Finally seeing some comic characters outside of the norm come into the fray.

Henry Cavill should do the "voice", only to piss off the cult.

Anyway, crazy how almost close to 50 years, this is going to first live action adaptation to bring in the cosmic aspects of Superman.
