SUPERMAN: LEGACY Director James Gunn Reveals Some Of His Favorite Superman Villains From The Comics

While not necessarily an indication of what we'll see in Superman: Legacy, filmmaker James Gunn has generated a lot of discussion online after naming some of his favourite Superman villains from the comics.

With James Gunn getting closer to casting Superman: Legacy's leads, it won't be too much longer before the DCU movie begins to take shape.

Cameras aren't set to start rolling until early next year (meaning we'll be waiting a while for set photos) but we'd imagine DC Studios won't quite be as leaky a ship as Warner Bros.' DCEU was. The plot of The Flash, for example, has been readily available online for a good year or more!

So, leaks may be off the table, but Gunn continues to keep fans updated on social media.

Asked by a fan who some of his favourite underrated Superman villains are, the filmmaker said he has "too many to count," but shared four who have clearly resonated with him as a fan. Now, this doesn't necessarily mean any of them will be featured in Superman: Legacy, though we can't help but wonder!

For those of you wondering who they are, Gunn shared photos of Parasite, Silver Banshee, Ultra-Humanite, and Lady Blaze, a relatively obscure bunch we're sure the DC Studios co-CEO could have fun with.

He'd later go on to share his love for Bizarro and Metallo but pointed out that neither of them are necessarily as underrated as the others he listed.

If recent casting news is to be believed, then Lex Luthor will be part of Superman: Legacy, though we're hoping he won't be the reboot's sole baddie.

"Superman: Legacy tells the story of Superman's journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas," reads the movie's synopsis. "He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned."

Superman: Legacy is set to be released in theaters on July 11. 2025.

Gunn Bizarro would be basically, I mean, man, that would be perfect.

@TempleRod - think of the effort he put into Guardians 1, now he has a new life at DC. Same situation, he's gotta hit a homerun to convince people. This looks more like a grandslam

@TempleRod - for sure. i've been hoping for either bizarro or metallo in a new superman movie. two of my fave superman villains that we just haven't seen yet.

Would love a more tragic and kinda freaky bizarro. Metallo would be a great sequel villain, the first time supes faces someone truly evil.

Bizarro to debut at the end of Superman: Legacy.

Parasite, Bizarro, Metallo, and Brainiac are the villains I’d be most excited to see debut in a live-action film.

Others like Toyman and Mr Mxyzptlk I’m in no rush to see adapted for a live action movie.

Would love to see Parasite. He can be absolutely terrifying and somewhat gross. Visually he'd be a very cool villain.

@MaxPaint -

I am surprised that he didn't mention Brainiac and Mongul.

Mongal was in The Suicide Squad.

I would love to see Gunn tackle the Ultra-Humanite, I feel like he's one of the few people that could actually pull it off.

Is Parasite that underrated. I don’t really care if the others show up but some of the above comments great ideas including Brainiac and Mongul.

Bizarro also would be great but Gunn might play him for laughs even if he does not intend to include the same humor in GotG.

I do too. I always think it's more interesting when the villain is not a doppelganger. Seems like that's the easy way out. Iron Man fights another Iron Man, Cap fights another super soldier, Hulk fights another Hulk, Superman fights a Kryptonian, Shazam fights another Wizard. It's always more interesting to me when the hero has to go beyond their god-like powers to defeat the bad guy. This is why I prefer Spider-Man and Batman (as long as Batman isn't fighting another ninja).
