In Defense of SUPERMAN RETURNS

IndieWire has released a video essay that intelligently analyzes the much-maligned 2006 film in a positive light. What do you think?

Before we begin, I want to make it clear that these videos do not reflect my personal opinions of the film Superman Returns. While I do feel that the film is unjustly criticized at times, I also do not agree entirely with the points made by this video, and while I find the film to be a decent movie, I believe it to be a terrible Superman movie.

However, the reviewer makes some rather insightful observations about the themes of the film that I felt were worth sharing. It may not be a total vindication of Superman Returns as a piece of entertainment, but it at least provides an idea of what the filmmakers were trying to do with the film as a piece of art.

[EDITOR'S NOTE: The inspiration for this piece, Deep Focus: Superman Returns - Angel of America, comes from a review Matt Zoller Seitz wrote for New York Press in 2006 at the time of the film's release. We have reprinted that piece below with this video essay, which compares the movie to the original Christopher Reeve films, and makes the case for Superman Returns as a neglected gem in the comic book movie genre.]

I know it's not the popular thing to say, but, I liked Superman Returns.

I appreciated it for what it was. I didn't crap on it for what it could have been.

Superman Returns would have been better if it stayed away from the whole kid thing, Lex Luthor as the villain, again, and just in general more action. Superman. This is Superman. Alien from another planet, pretty much invulnerable. Batman Begins and TDK had more action than this movie. The book was so much better than what the film turned out to be. Seriously, probably the main thing that annoys me is that Bryan Singer left the successful X-men Franchise, to reboot Superman, and left us with what could have been an awesome conclusion to the X-men Trilogy. But instead we get the crappy X-men 3 movie, and an even worse Superman film. What possible reason did Singer have to abandon the X-men for Superman? It wasn't like his X-men films were terrible. They were amazing, especially the second one. What happened?

superman returns wasnt that bad, the story was about sueperman returning to society in both film and reality and people wanted some epic showdown which would of been cool. Lois lane and her kid killed the movie, but it couldve been epic in a sequel becuase there was alot to play with the rock in space, lex being free but stranded, and a super powered kid roaming metropolis who believe someone else was his father the whole time. but the movie was never made and zack snyder got man of steel off the ground so now we all wait to see if he will kill or revive this franchise b/c if this movie sux no more superman films for a few years
