Johnny Depp Isn't Signed On For Possible LONE RANGER Sequels, But Armie Hammer Is

Armie Hammer (John Reid) and Ruth Wilson (Rebecca Reid) have confirmed that they've both signed a three-picture deal for The Lone Ranger, but surprisingly, Johnny Depp (Tonto) says that his contract was a "one-shot deal".

In this day and age, it's hardly a surprise when the stars of a major blockbuster would be contracted to return for another film or two. Speaking with E! Online, The Lone Ranger star Armie Hammer confirms that he's signed on for a couple more films as the iconic character. "But we'll see. It all kind of depends on this one." Ruth Wilson (who plays Rebecca Reid in the Disney action western) also signed the three-picture deal. "I'm signed for three. So if there is another one, it would be lovely to be in it but you never know. Hopefully, fingers crossed."

Surprisingly, the actor who didn't sign the multi-film contract was Johnny Depp (Tonto), whose name has headlined the movie's marketing. "I think it was a one-shot deal," the actor said. However, he says that he'd definitely be game for another Lone Ranger film if it was greenlit. "If they started talking sequel on this I'd be ready to go in a second." Of course, Depp is already headlining another Disney franchise in Pirates Of The Caribbean, with the fifth installment heading to theaters July 10th, 2015.

Of course, a sequel to The Lone Ranger is far from confirmed. Many have predicted that the film would be one of the year's biggest box office disappointments, due to its troubled production, $250M or so budget and Disney's recent track record with megablockbusters (specifically last year's John Carter, which also had a $250M budget). However, it's possible that it could be a very pleasant surprise and could kick off yet another franchise for the studio. After all, many expected World War Z to be a flop, but it did so well in its opening weekend, a sequel is now in development. Do you want to see a sequel to The Lone Ranger?

The Lone Ranger stars Armie Hammer, Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Ruth Wilson, Tom Wilkinson and William Fichtner. The film is set to hit theaters July 3rd.

I'm pretty sure its because Armie Hammer was signed on as Lone Ranger before Depp was as Tonto

Disney really needs a franchise outside of POTC. Unfortunately, I don't see The Lone Ranger being that other franchise.

I'm quite confident this will bomb big time....a 'Wild Wild West' feel to it.

I was keen earlier thinking it had potential, but that feeling has gone.

Think the movie would benefit more from a 'Spaghetti Western' approach....'Good, Bad, Ugly' 'Fist Full of Dollars' etc

Django Unchained was an awesome tip of the hat to the classics!

The next films should focus on the REAL STAR Lone Ranger and not have Johnny Depp steal the show! I have my doubts on this one! I hate Depp's oddball roles hes much better when hes playing a normal guy! But if it is a hit Id like them to focus on Lone Ranger!

As much as I do feel hesitant about this film we do need more westerns but this has Tim Burton meets Cowboys written all over it! But I'll give it a shot!

@TheHeat, do you mean you want them to have anther franchise or that they NEED one? I hope the former, because Disney doesn't really NEED anything.

Anyway, this movie will bomb.

I'M OKAY WITH THIS.

Though, we'll see if the movie's actually any good. It could be some good old fashioned Western fun with some modern flare, but man am I sick of Johnny Depp.

Disney has 3 big hits this year with IM 3, Oz the great and powerful and Monster U. So even if the Lone Ranger does fail at the box office Disney is still having a great year.

@ MartionAbominationClone - Johnny Depp is one quarter Cherokee, I believe...much better than nothing.

Why would they need to spend $250 million on a western? That's just out of control! Disney needs to put Verbinski on a leash (if he's the one responsible). The Lone Ranger just doesn't appeal to me like Pirates.

This movie may not be all that successful but as long as it's better than Man of Shits, I'm a happy camper.

Does anyone on this freaking site go to the movies to enjoy themselves? The biggest bunch of negative a$$holes on any comment board. I held back on all the shit talk on the man of steel bashing, because clearly no one on here likes good movies. A blind person can see this movie will be a hit. It looks great.
Oh and don't get me started on im3, because it was damn good too, and don't think I don't read the source material......

I agree with AbomiNationClone with the fact that, even though Johnny Depp IS 1/4 Native American, I'm sure there are still "Full Blooded" "Native American" ACTORS out there or at least some whom's both parents are Native American who are looking for that BIG break. Native Americans have been consistently getting white washed, shafted and not given roles in Hollywood. It's always somebody saying they are 1/8 Native American, or their great grand uncle was Cherokee dadadada...

I understand that Disney is now trying the "Marvel Studios" casting formula for this movie but Disney might have been better off getting a known established actor for The Lone Ranger and a break out unknown for Tonto.

TopCat89 Is right, Disney wants family films but The Lone Ranger should be a grittier film, think 3:10 To Yuma but with adventure. This Lone Ranger needs to be taken seriously and would give the film more gravitas. Give the film a Classic Western Film but with a serious and not kiddie tone. That's why a movie like the original Raiders Of The Lost Ark was so great because even though it was a family film, it was not kiddie, they had a fun and adventure tone but it was quite serious. For the Lone Ranger to be taken seriously for THIS generation, I don't think going "kiddie" was the right decision.

Johnny Depp is Captain Jack Sparrow in every movie now.
He even takes the Sparrow costume with him everywhere!

This will not get a sequel with a $250,000,000 budget it is guaranteed not to recoup. It's only hope is if they eat it up at the foreign box office which I don't anticipate happening. And as far as casting Depp I only have two words to say,...

I thought that this would flop, but after talking with my father, I'm not so sure. He was very excited to see this as he remembered watching it as a kid. If it gets good word of mouth, I wouldn't be surprised if the nostalgia factor kicks in and this is a surprise hit.

MOS and Star Trek were the best adventures this summer, and they're all the more better because they made Purdue's labia hurt.

As for the Lone Ranger, yeah, I'll go see it, but I'm fully expecting the movie to fall apart midway through the second act and heading into the third act, much like Wild Wild West and the last three Pirates movies.

@pinto, JJ Abrams is going to ruin Star Wars, though probably not as bad as Lucas did.

@ Battabing, What may save Star Wars this time around is that more chiefs are involved (not just "yes Mr. Lucas"). JJ is only the director here. Not the writer, not the producer (really). Lucasfilm is Kathleen Kennedy and the Disney execs will have some say—so the mix is different/diverse. Nor Orci/Kurtzman either.
