Chris Hemsworth Talks In Detail About Bringing Thor To The Big Screen!

On What It Was Like To Get To Kiss Natalie Portman:

Ridiculous. Going from kissing Natalie Portman to working with Anthony Hopkins — the whole experience was like, “What the [frick] am I doing here?” But in a good way. It literally seemed like last week I was still working on Home and Away.

On Kenneth Branagh, And Whether He Felt Intimidated Being Surrounded By Actors Like Anthony Hopkins:

You have the massive world that was created by Marvel, and then you have these very intimate actors around you. There was as much character work on this as there would be on a little independent film. So, [I felt] very fortunate in that sense, and I had never had anyone push me in so many different directions or places that Ken did with my character. Instead of trying to track ‘this is who he is and this is what we do’, we’d try one thing and say, “Great, we’ve got that, now let’s give this a go.” By doing that you constantly go, “I didn’t think of that, but I could use that here.” It was a constant evolution, which is a freer way to work. We weren’t on this tightrope of, “Oh [frick], don’t do that, only do this.” And Anthony Hopkins is just incredible to be around — he lifts everybody’s game. You soak up everything he is doing and learn from that.

On Creating The Fantastic World Of Thor:

We were lucky in that they had actually built most of the sets. It’s easier having this big fantasy world around you than if there was just a green screen. It was like being a kid playing dress-ups. You do feel like you are this guy — especially with the costume. The first day I put it on, Hopkins looked at me and looked at both of us, and said, “No acting required here.”

On The Fans:

I did Comic-Con and there were 7000 people. They showed a clip from the film then we did interviews where there were 20 people at each table, so that was the introduction. I was thrown into it — holy shit! I got a real sense of the fan base that Thor has and the buzz around it. You’re plugging away, you’re auditioning and your fingers are crossed. Then you get the part, sign the contract and start to realise millions of people follow this guy and know more about your character than you do. It’s existed for 50 years or something and all of a sudden it’s like, “Oh [frick], there’s a lot of people waiting here to say that’s right, or that’s wrong.” So it’s a funny thing to walk into. Not often do you approach a character where people know more about him than you do.

With an all star cast which includes Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Anthony Hopkins as Odin, Natalie Portman as Jane Foster, Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Thor is set to be released in the UK on April 29 and shortly after in the US on May 6, later this year!

That is awesome that they actually built the sets. Less green screen adds to the realism, but can be limiting to the sensationalism. For example, in the scenes where there is combat with the Jotuns and when he smashes the handle of Mjolnir against the ground and causes it to more or less erupt, they're still using green screen. They're not when he's in the diner drinking coffee. Pretty sure they built that set.

@Neo Agree with all your list except Jackman. How could you! Can I talk you out of it? The only bad casting that comes close to how much I despise Jackman/Logan (because in my opinion we haven't seen Wolverine on screen yet) was Affleck/Daredevil. I had to go to anger management after that one

superpooper
superpooper - 4/5/2011, 3:35 PM
@cyclopsistherealleader Well, first off he was already the Human Torch...a character he was perfect for. Now you might argue that Fantastic Four was Fox and this is finally a true Marvel movie, but normal people don't know and furthermore don't care who the studio was. They just know that the same guy who played Human Torch is now Captain America and it's weird. Secondly, though I think he's a great comedic actor, he's only had a few dramatic roles and never as the lead. I'm not confident that he can carry a non-comedic action movie as the main lead role. I don't see him as a person who could not only command respect from but actually be the leader of the Avengers. Actually, as far as his acting talent goes, I don't think he could carry any movie, comedic or not on his own as the lead. The first and last time he did so was that movie "Push", which most of us have already forgotten about. Finally, I personally feel the he does not look the part. I don't like his face. Something about his nose doesn't make the mask/helmet look right. Plus his build wasn't right for Captain America. He bulked up with steroids, which is obvious by how doughy he looks with his shirt off, and as a result he doesn't look ripped, which is how someone with Captain America's physical abilities would look. He looks like he's holding too much water weight. In my opinion I just really feel they could've found someone better. If it was up to me, the Human Torch thing on it's own would've nixed him from my short list. So that's why I don't think he'll pull it off. But that's not the main reason you'll be leaving the theater with your face in your palm. We got plenty more problems than just Chris Evans that are going to take that movie down. Of course this is an article about Thor, but I don't mind getting into this with you if you'd like.
superpooper
superpooper - 4/5/2011, 3:47 PM
@Elguason I do hate the Captain America movie so far, but I don't just hate it out of blind contempt or because I want another movie to do better. I hate it because Captain America is one of my all-time favorite comic book characters and I don't like how it looks like he's going to be portrayed in this movie. If I didn't care so much about the character I don't think I'd give two shits whether or not the movie was good or bad, but I do. So if that makes me a hater than kiss my ass. But anyways...back to Thor.
NeoBaggins
NeoBaggins - 4/5/2011, 5:52 PM
Hellsing THANK YOU FOR THAT INFO! I'm not falling for conversion 3D again.

Superpooper I'll admit, Jackman may be on my list because I've never seen another Wolverine. So, it may be a choice based on familiarity, but I do like his performance. He's working with a limited version of Wolverine. I think things were about to get interesting with this new buffed up Wolverine he was gearing up for before the director stepped down.

Cyclopsistherealleader I'm a man of honor. If Evans does good, I'll be the first one to say so. You have to understand; I WANT the movie to be good. If I didn't care, I wouldn't have been disgusted when I heard about the lazy, cheap and insulting casting of Evans. And it's not him alone. The way the entire casting was handled seemed like they wern't taking the movie seriously. Channing Tatum? (I'd take him over Evans and I'm not even joking). Then they have a guy that doesn't get the Cap role and they just bump him over to Buckey. It has a very, whatever, type feel to it. But the bottom line is this; I don't think Evans has the presense to pull off Captain America. You have to be fully respectable to play this role in my opinion. Cap's serious badass demeanor tones down the fact that his suit is the flag- an element that can turn to comedy real quick. I can block out the fact that he's already played a main MARVEL character (better casting too) but I can't believe him as Captain America. And from his interviews, I don't think he believes himself as Captain America either. But we'll see. I will watch the film with all fairness and the hopes of liking it. And even without the casting issue, I haven't really seen anything impressive about the movie other than sickly Rogers. I'm amused by that and I give them props for handling that story element with such detail.
superpooper
superpooper - 4/5/2011, 7:50 PM
@cyclops Dude, I'm not just trying to shit on what you like either. Obviously this version of Cap works for you and who am I to say you're supposed to hate it? It just doesn't work for me, that's all. I'm still going to go see it and...believe it or not...give it a chance. I just don't like what I've seen so far. I have to be honest and say that I hope it disappoints only because I want to see it fixed. I think they can do better. Now who knows, maybe it'll win me over and in that case "hooray for Hollywood". Maybe it'll be a huge success and I'll still hate it and in that case "boo hoo for super poo". Bottom line is I guess we'll all just have to wait and see, won't we? I do like Thor so far. I think everything is spot on as it should be and I don't have any major complaints. So at least there's 2 out of 4 so far that I'm pretty sure I'm going to like.
NeoBaggins
NeoBaggins - 4/5/2011, 8:58 PM
superpooper I want to like all these films for the sake of the Avengers and just film enjoyment in general, but a part of me doesn't mind if Cap tanks. So I understand when you say you hope it disappoints. I seriously believe these guys say "hey, the fans will eat up whatever we do". So they don't put in the best effort, do stuff on the cheap and at low quality, then try to fluff things up in interviews like they're reinventing the wheel. And just judging from this site alone, I do see a lot of easily impressed people that probably help to keep shitty movies in production. To each his own, but when dudes are talking about how they are coming on themselves from the most insignificant photos and footage, I'm sure the film makers get lazy. Er.

If fans had hire standards, and it effected ticket sales, more thought and quality would go into the films. Better choices would be made. But I'm just guessing.
