The Mighty Thor is a powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions reignite an ancient war. Thor is cast down to Earth and forced to live among humans as punishment. Once here, Thor learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends the darkest forces of Asgard to invade Earth.

With the score of 3.5 from the 5 possible stars given by the site, here are some bits of IGN's review of the film (I tried to keep the spoilers low, and thus any spoiling part was not included in this one. You can still check the complete review by clicking the link below; of course on your own risk).

Thor may be the proverbial fish out of water here, but we're thankfully spared many of the goofy things that come with that oft-tread movie territory. Thor understands Earth and humans; he's just a little out of step with our customs and tech. Judging from the taser and hospital clips that have been released, you might think the film is chock full of physical comedy, but happily they are just a few moments in an otherwise straightforward Thor tale.

Outside of these occasional moments of comic relief, director Kenneth Branagh keeps the focus squarely on Thor's dramatic arc. The movie's strongest moments aren't necessarily the comic booky ones (although they are pretty cool), but rather the familial ones in Asgard. Thor's scenes with Loki and Odin crackle with an intensity and emotion sometimes lacking in the earthly scenes. These moments feel like the ones that Branagh and his leads were the most emotionally invested in, and that sincerity helps you buy into this otherwise fantastical world, one which we see far more of than the marketing has heretofore revealed.

The visual effects are largely good, especially the Asgard and Jotunheim sequences. The Destroyer was a bit underwhelming, coming across as a lesser version of Gort from The Day the Earth Stood Still. Perhaps the Destroyer sequence wouldn't have felt so anticlimactic if he were letting loose on a place that didn't seem like a fake western town set. (The sight of super-powered badasses busting up a small town -- coupled with the story of an alien hero stripped of his powers, who is in love with an Earth woman and who cries out to his heavenly father -- was more than a little reminiscent of Superman II.)

The biggest problem with the earthly storyline isn't its tone or setting, but rather the brevity of Thor's stay there. He's basically in town for the weekend and in that time he learns the error of his ways? (Oh, don't act like that's a spoiler!) Exile ain't what it used to be. That short time-frame asks a lot of the audience to buy that Thor would actually fall in love with Jane and not just be smitten with her. I can see why she'd be overwhelmed by him -- it's not every day that a girl meets the god of thunder -- but what does Thor see in her exactly? Kindness and beauty, yes, but Sif also possesses that. Maybe if Thor had been consigned to Earth for longer then his romantic longing and change of heart would have been more believable. But I suppose more time spent on Earth isn't exactly what Thor fans want, is it?

For any fanboys out there worried that the Thor film will be one in name only, rest easy. This movie is ultimately about what's at stake in Asgard. My only real misgiving with that is that we never get a real sense of Asgard as a community (we do with the small town stuff). Seriously, what do they do up there all day? They're all dressed up with nowhere to go and nothing to do except attend the occasional banquet or throne room event. The busiest people in Asgard appear to be the Bifrost guardian Heimdall (an intense Idris Elba, who has more screen time than you might expect) and the unseen cleaning staff who keep the gilded floors ultra-shiny. Must be the same company the Empire uses.

Although it would've been nice if Asgard felt a bit more "lived in," Branagh and Co. deserve credit for making these "gods" feel like real people. The rest is just very sweet eye candy, but the good stuff is the family drama and they nailed that. Thor also serves as a star-making vehicle for Hemsworth and Hiddleston, both of whom own the screen whenever they're on it. The cast's bigger names -- Hopkins, Portman, Skarsgård -- are all fine, but it's the fresher faces, including Dennings and Alexander, who fare best.

Thor may not be a game-changer for comic book movies, but it's a solidly entertaining one most noteworthy for taking what could have been utterly campy material and making it dramatic and relatable. There's action and otherworldly elements to appease the core fans and possibly even win over some skeptics, and enough humor and humanity to engage general audiences.

So that's it! As I said before, you can freely visit the site to check out the complete review, which is accompanied by several spoilers (in my opinion, they are). The review sounds that the movie is just like what we expected, but you still need to see it by yourself on May 6, later this year!

So, the movie is better than Iron Man, and with a Lord of the Rings touch..
I loved Iron Man, I loved Lord of the Rings... which means only one thing: I will jeez with Thor!

And of course after the credits, there's an opening for The Avengers, awesome!

IGN also gave Iron Man 2 a 4 when it deserved a 3, so I'm sort of skeptical about this review. I actually expect the movie to be better than 3.5 out of 5 stars, at least 4.

Sorry guys, but i predicted this. When i saw the trailers, I knew that it would be better than Iron Man2, but not Iron Man 1. Many Cbm fans are biased, and because of their hatred of DC comics and the success of the Nolan Batman films, bash them and try to place this one over them. Im going to see Thor, with HIGH expectations, the DC haters couldnt overhype this film enough. I just doubt that it will exceed my expectations like TDK did. Im not biased, I look at all CBMs as if they were theur own stand alone film. I am a DIEHARD fan of Marvel, but I also love DC, but all the comments over the past few months saying that this film was going to blow all other CBMs over the water, Including TDK, sounds pretty ridiculous right now. Thanks IGN, I finally got to ser an opinion of Thor that isn't biased. Hope the film is as successful ad Iron Man, though.

I am looking forward to this and I am not a big Marvel fan but I do get the feeling it would be a cool movie to see and not really a groundbreaking one.

@Superman17

So far, no mainstream Marvel or DC movie has exceeded my expectations. Maybe it's because I always walk in the theater with high expectations. I've always thought marvel movies lacked action and their climax is often short and anticlimactic. The oft-hyped TDK was for me a let down partly because it was so overhyped that I went in having successfully fought off the temptation of watching any preview clips or read any reviews and it still turned out to be very predictable. The "twists" in it I saw coming. You knew gordon wasn't actually dead because he hadn't even been promoted to commisioner yet. And as soon as you realize that you knew that he was the one driving the truck and this is all one big trap for the joker. Also the movie went out of it's way to dumb down the police to make batman and Gordon look good. Also the "twist" where the joker switches the hostage takers and the hostages was also pretty obvious. I forgot which movie it was copied from but it definitely wasn't original. I guess the only thing in the movie that wasn't predictable was the 2 bomb-rigged barges. I definitely thought one was gonna blow the other one up and was pleasantly surprised at the passengers' altruism. But I think perhaps that reveals more about my belief in the selfishness of human nature than it does about the overall predictability of the storyline.

But saying that, I have gone on to see these movies multiple times (not in the theaters but on home video). I own them on DVD/bluray. And they have certainly grown on me--that is to say I lappreciate them more now than when I first saw them in theaters. My faves in no particular order are spider-man 2, tdk, iron man, tih.

I would say that the only cbm's that exceeded my expectations were actually the ones in which I went in not expecting anything special. That would
be V for Vendetta and Kick-Ass. But neither of those are 'mainstream' cbm's.

Each person will rate it according to their own beliefs and opinions. I will wait until I see Thor to judge it. The reviews mean nothing to me.

i swore that i wouldnt read any review before i see the filn in 1 and a half week but i couldnt help my self.Even though the score was good i have to say it was a really mediocre review in my opinion. The reviewer obviously isnt a huge fan of thor comics. His main problems are that thor doesnt spend much time on earth and that we dont get to see the everyday life in asgard.I dont remember a single comic book of thor that showed everyday life.I mean what did he expect odin to clean his teeth with an uru made toothbrash? As for his time on earth i cant judge till i see the movie i just hoped the dude mentioned more things like is thor and loki faithful to the comics as characters and more about theyre powers.Thor is my most anticipated movie of this year sinc elast summer at comiccon.I wasnt expecting a 10/10 but they gave kick ass that score which was an average movie based on an average comic book so i dont trust ign reviews that much.
