Per The Hollywood Reporter "Thor: The Dark World grossed a strong $7.1 million as it opened in North America Thursday night. They go on to say that the movie "has already earned more than $150 million overseas, where it began rolling out last weekend. The movie's international total through Thursday is $152.8 million. It opens Friday in a raft of other markets, including China."

To put this in perspective, 'Thor' grossed $3.2 million in midnight screenings in the Summer of 2011, which makes these numbers much more impressive for a Fall release. Likewise, 'Thor: The Dark World' is on pace to cross $300 million worldwide by the end of this weekend, which would already be two thirds of the originals total gross of $449.3 million globally. It is important to keep in mind that 'The Avengers Effect' combined with the heightened profile of both Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston are likely large contributors to these numbers.

Tracking numbers place Thor The Dark World on track for a $90 million dollar opening, though this number looks to increase due to high interest in all quadrants, especially females. The record for a early November opening weekend is $88 Million dollars by last years 'Skyfall', and the overall November record is held by 'The Twilight Saga: New Moon' which opened on November 20th and grossed $142.8 million in it's first 3 days of release.

Looks like if numbers hold steady Marvel will have another blockbuster in the bag. How much do you guys think 'Thor: The Dark World' will gross in the US by the end of this weekend?

Deserves all the money it can get. I really want this to hit a billion, but I don't know if it will.

This really is a movie that reaches all demos.

WOuld be nice to have a Marvel movie without RDJ make a ton of money. Nothing against him (I prefer to have no Iron Man than an Iron Man played by someone else), but it'd be nice to see that Marvel has legs besides him.

'saw it last night...started off spectacularly with the "Cap: TWS" extended preview and overall the film is much improved over the first, 'deserves to bring in a ton of cash, and if you've seen it? you know they have to make a Thor 3! :-)

@TypicalParkerLuck- I f*cking love it!

As for the film, I liked more than the predecessor but the humor is just becoming too much especially those with Kat Dennings but some of it was perfect for the movie. Surely one of my favorite stand-alone MARVEL studios films.

It was a little too short imo. I think it could've been a lot better if we got some more scenes with Malekith and the Dark Elves to help flesh that story out a bit more but overall it doesn't hurt the film. Kat Dennings, however, needs to go. Her character is really pointless and this time around they give her an intern who is even more pointless. Every time they are on screen I am just waiting for the scene to end so they can get back to the real story I came to see. 8.5/10 for me folks!

Seen it last night at 8pm. Straight awesome. It was pretty slow at first but towards almost the middle of the movie, that's when the games began. And they could've done away with Kat 'Darcy' Dennings, she was pointless / annoying and so was the intern. The acting was great, the characters were interesting and the dialogue was great. I'd give it a 9/10.

And it's my favorite Marvel solo film so far.

good to hear. it looks like thor 2 is better than I thought.

the thing about bad trailers is that it gives you low expectations, and when you see a movie that is not bad is a positive surprise.

i was pumped for xmen origins wolverine when i saw the trailers but i got so disappointed by the movie after i watched.

im planning to go see this weekend

Thor RULES!!

still i hope Feige & co. don't get too big a head and think there's no room for improvement, which there's a LOT of it..especially in regards to their movies' running time. they're all too short.

in thor: tdw this is evident in the fact that Malekith is by far the WEAKEST marvel villain. and he got potential to be just as strong as Loki..but due to the short running time marvel seems to want for their films, the character's become the movie's casualty because of it.

all in all, i think TIH, IM 2, Thor 1 & 2..each could've been a much MUCH better movie on its own merits. sure, keeping the movie's pace going is good, but at times, there's nothing wrong with having some downtime for character developments and scenes to enrich the plot and characters.

all in all, though, far from being a great movie, but, so far, Thor: TDW's the best cbm for me this year, second IM 3, then MoS...haven't seen Wolverine.
