Fans everywhere have been excited about the upcoming THOR and Green Lantern films for quite some time. THOR directed by Kenneth Branagh and starring Chris Hemsworth is at the top of many peoples "must see" list. The Green Lantern directed by Martin Campbell and starring Ryan Reynolds tops that very same list for many others.

Now both of these characters lend themselves nicely to a chance at epicness on screen. The Green Lantern has the potential to follow in the footsteps of Star Wars and many other space adventure films. Add in the fact that he is a bonafide "superhero" of fantastic proportions and the chance for something completely unique goes way up. The power from The Green Lanterns ring enables him to do just about anything that he can imagine doing, as long as he has the will power to back it up (the list of GL's powers goes on forever but most of us are familiar with the majority of things on it).

Not to be outdone, THOR could set the bar for future fantasy adventures. Not only is THOR the Norse God of Thunder but he is a time, space and inter dimensional traveler in his own right. What we could see in this film is a mixture of Lord of the Rings, Star Wars and Superman. Once again the vast power at THOR's command is comprised of a list that can fill a book, and once again we are familiar with the majority of them.

Seeing as how these two films are due out in the same year and they are both centered around heroes of immense physical power, one from Marvel and one from DC, this would be a perfect opportunity for a couple of POLLs.

The first POLL is to see who we think would still be standing after a battle between the two. It has nothing to do with the films, just the characters.

The second POLL is to see which movie we CBMers beleive will be the biggest mindblower between the two films.

Thor would win. But I got a feeling Green Lantern will be a better movie. They do have a better director.

Thor in a actual fight. But I think GL will be the better movie and make more money.

I think Thor could take just about anyone in any universe in a fight.
The GL movie though is going to be more accessible though.

Thor on both.

@Dynamo- Are you honestly trying to say that the same man who gave us The Legend of Zorro is a better director than Kenneth Brannagh? You're off your head.
Dynamo

Yes I'm saying the man who brought us Casino Royale, The Mask of Zorro and Golden Eye is better suited for a Superhero movie than the man who brought us Mary Shely's Frankenstein.

Thor has more of a blockbuster cast. A lot of GL is going to rely on the special effects and CGI that are used in the film. GL has the space setting that will be a plus and Tho has Asgard. I think Thor has the advantage of having the mythology behind him as opposed to just being a comic book character. That should appeal to more of the public. Should be an interesting battle between the two films.

I'm not responding to this survey because I'm VERY upset with the way that Warner Bros is doing to stop all the news about the film involving the publication of images from the Green Lantern movie.

@tea damn that is so good it is almost evil.

Thor on both. Fight is not even worth talking about.

Thor is a much bigger Character cause he is you know kinda real. With his mythological background I think he could end up in a Blockbuster. But I think this is still pretty risky. It could also easily just do ok.

I think Green Lantern is a bit of a safer bet but his Blockbuster potential seems far less. Still could happen if the movie just hits the right combination of notes. What is more important is that the chance of epic failure seems remote with GL but high with Thor.

Green Lantern's power is limited, he'd put up a good fight till he runs out of power. However Martin Cambelle specialises in big budget blockbusters. He knows how to get audiences into the theatre. This is Branaghs first blockbuster.

Vertical Limit made 215 mil in the box office and cost 75 mil. Hamlet cost 18 mil and made back 4 million.

dude Green lantern will do better in the box office i think because of Ryan Reynolds. The fact that hes more well known and Entertainment weekly did a cover story on him also. Green lantern has the heads up on thor.
Hawksblueyes
Hawksblueyes - 9/25/2010, 5:19 PM
If done right, I think both of these movies go through the roof. With THOR, I think it will bring in the comic fan but also the fantasy and space adventure fans, not to mention mythology nuts.

Green lantern all depend on the trailers. The Green Lantern has so much potential on the space epic front but if they don't get the graphics spot on, it could look like a cheese fest, as Ranger alluded to. So much relies on the special effects in this film, its ridiculous. We all can't wait to see him use a gigantic emerald green fist to punch someones lights out but it had better look awesome or the general public won't buy into it at all.

SandMan: If you don't think THOR is going to be recieveing cover stories the closer it gets to release, you're sadly mistaken.

@Intruder
Ok In terms of suitability for superhero film, who's the better director?

@Teabag
That wasn't the point I made. I said Blockbuster, not terms of cinematic greatness. Oh an FYI I loved Hamlet, so lets not try to be pretentious. I did think Frankenstein was horrible tho.
Magicfingers
Magicfingers - 9/25/2010, 5:26 PM
@Dynamo & Starsapphire- I said the exact same thing on both counts. I'm not sure which film I'm MORE excited to see.
GL= Space Epic
Thor= Godly Epic

I CAN'T CHOOSE!!!
Dynamo
Dynamo - 9/25/2010, 5:30 PM
@Teabag
It could've been down to marketing. People went to see Romeo and Juliet, if marketed properly there's no reason people wouldn't have seen Hamlet.

...pop culture? Where'd u get that from?

Also you have to consider the Marketing for the films. WB definalty has better Marketing than Marvel. When people see names like Ryan Reynolds and "The director of Casino Royale" it'll strike more of a chord than Chris Hemsworth and "The director of Henry V"

@Intruder And the designs for the alien creatures, and first draft of the script and the voice over for the trailer. I still perfered all of that to the Thor trailer. I didn't like all the wire work.

Hard to say who would win in an actualized fight. GL has the most powerful weapon in the Universe. Thor is the god of thunder. Pretty hard to gauge.

As far as financial success, it would probably be Thor for a handful of reasons above GL.

1. The momentum of the Avenger films would bring in the usual fanbase, and the recent converts who just want to see the puzzle coming together from IM, and TIH.
2. The star-studded cast and director also will bring non-comicbook fans.
3. Fans of mythology but not necessarily comics.
4. People that won't see a movie that takes place in outer space will cost GL. And yes, they're out there.

This, even though I think GL may turn out to be a better film despite the box-office draw.

I didn't vote in the Thor vs. GL in a fight, but I did vote for Thor in the Box Office.

Thor wins in a fight. Hands down!

I think GL will gather more non comoicbookmoive fans because of ryan. I think thor will get more tickets sold because it is linked to the Ironman Movies and The Incredible Hulk. And everyone wants to know how the Avengers Assemble.

thor would win in a fight and i believe that he is going to win at the box office also. i think the gladiator/warrior persona of thor will draw in crowds in huge numbers, not to mention that thor is an actual mythological figure and not just a comic book character

People claim that the fantasy element would bring in a larger audience. Wasn't the fantasy element played down in the trailer? I mean they seemed to play up the fact that its set in modern earth.

Thor wins in a fight. Green Lantern movie has the bigger BO potential. On paper, the Thor movie sounds dumb and has less star power. I also think the acting and visual effects won't be as good as Green Lantern.

Ryan Reynolds + Blake Lively + Mark Strong

sounds a lot more interesting especially to younger people than

Chris Hemsworth + Natalie Portman + Anthony Hopkins
