Ray Stevenson On Playing Volstagg In Thor & His Thoughts On Returning For Thor 2

The actor who has played two Marvel characters now discusses how he got the part of the larger than life Volstagg in Thor and tells us briefly what he knows about returning for the sequel..

In an in-depth interview with The Coventry Telegraph Stevenson discusses his upcoming projects as well as some of his previous ones like Thor. He reveals how playing one of the Warriors Three came about and how the role "almost killed him", as well as commenting on his return for Thor 2. Unfortunately he doesn't know too much more than we do but he gives us his thoughts on the direction the movie may go in.

THOR WAS ONE OF THE YEAR'S BIGGEST BLOCKBUSTERS. HOW DID YOU LAND THE PART OF HIS ALLY, VOLSTAGG, ONE OF THE WARRIORS THREE?

Kenneth Branagh just called me up and he says, 'Ray, I've got this job...', I said, 'I'll do it!' He said, 'No, let me explain. I've been watching your work love, I know you're a big strapping guy and everything, but there's this part and I think you could do it'. Then the role nearly killed me. We were filming in New Mexico and LA. I had to have a vest on with ice water pumped through pipes on this vest to cool your core temperature down. I mean there's this huge latex fat suit, then a big pashmina woolly scarf as a beard, then a nice woolly hat as his headpiece. Then they put armour on you and give you a six-bladed axe to wield (see picture below of Ray in the role).

WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE IN THOR 2?

I think they're in talks with the director now. I know they want to mash these worlds together in The Avengers. I don't know. If the sequel happens it may be that Thor will go off on a wild adventure on his own and lead The Warriors Three to Asgard. We'll see.

That director could well be Patty Jenkins who has confirmed that she is the front runner. Be sure to click on the link back to The Geek Files below as Stevenson talks about his other projects including playing Firefly in Gi Joe Retaliation and beating up The Rock!

Pure speculation on my part but could Patty Jenkins be in contention to direct because the Enchantress will be in Thor 2?

I want to see Thor leave Earth behind completely for this one, by excluding Foster/Portman. Instead I'd like to see a love triangle between Thor, Sif and Enchantress. Enchantress taking on the antagonist role in place of Loki, causing all of Thor's troubles. For instance Enchantress could set up Beta Ray Bill for an epic confrontation.

And then there is her "Executioner" too.

What about Punisher? To be honest he did a great job in both Thor and Punisher and I wonder if he will continue as Castle in the future (if they will make a sequel)

He would choose to continue being the Punisher instead of being just another supporting cast if there's a chance.

Just get a better director and this could be so much better.
considering he looks just like the Bradstreet Punisher Covers

@Avalanche731 Does an evil sorceress count as empowering women? Sure technically there is thr whole magic thing.

@FoxPaw. Sounds like you want a soap opera :/ Like Odins Beard through a hour glass so are the days of our Asgardian lives

He was easily a better Castle than Jane was, IMO. I know that's a heavily debated topic but I'd agree completely that with the right director the Punisher could well served on film with Stevenson in the role again.

I think he was the best PUNISHER incarnation of all the 3 done so far in film (Dolph Lungren, Thomas Jane)... it's just too bad that Warzone was just not a good film.

Hela: yeah, who knows. It might be the Enchantress or Surtur or Beta Ray Bill. Tom said in his statement that Loki in Thor 2 will be taking the responsibility for what he has done to Earth in Avengers.
HelaGood

i confirm Seejay 's comment! thats one of the endearing things about Vostagg is his size and appetite. he was barely round in the first film.

hela & surtur for the sequel, you can add the enchantress & the excutioner as well.

also think balder the brave & valkyrie's would also be a
welcome additions.

Stevenson as Volstagg was directly Kenneth Branagh's fault? Interesting.

I love the movie so much that I tried to block it out of my mind with the power of denial. Didn't work. Stevensons Volstagg was violently mis-cast.

I don't mind the continuity if he comes back, but he feels so out of place that they could give me Nick Frost and I bet he'd fit in better.

@ marvel72--but adding Hela, Surtur, Enchantress and Executioner is a lot to add for a second movie. Isn't that what most folks complain about sequels: Too many new characters/villains? (or lame story, either one) Anyway, I would love to see Balder. He needs to be there! And if there's Balder, can Karnilla be far behind? Hmmm?
EarOne
EarOne - 9/29/2011, 4:36 AM
for me Ray ain't exactly my first choice for Volstagg. you'd need a John Goodman-type of actors for it.

oh, and if Thor 2 leaves earth entirely, you'd get the first certified BOMB for marvel studios. for that kinda stories, only the fanboys would be into. for the general mainstream audience, you'd need a combo between earth and the other 8 realms. there is that dwarf realm, the light and dark elf realms, the fiery realm of surtur, etc. but the earth MUST be included. sides, if they leave earth out, how would they fit Jane Foster into the story???
