Thor: Ragnarok was well received by both critics and audiences, and with Taika Waititi behind the helm he breathed new film into the Thor franchise, taking the character into a bold and exciting new direction that felt to many as a soft reboot for our Asgardian hero. While we still do not know how Thor will fare against Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War and its sequel, and Kevin Feige has yet to announce any Phase 4 MCU movies besides Spiderman's sequel and Guardians 3, Taika and Chris Hemsworth have already begun to brainstorm ideas for a possible Thor 4.
While spending New Year's Eve together in Australia, the two began to throw around many possible story ideas for Thor in a potential sequel to Ragnarok. Chris Hemsworth has already made it clear that working with Taika on the Ragnarok set was one of the most enjoyable experiences he's ever had making a film and he would love the opportunity to work with Taika again. With his character and the Asgardian franchise reenergized, Hemsworth has also expressed his desire to possibly renew his contract with Marvel to continue playing Thor. Hemsworth had this to say about his brainstorming with Taika:
-
"We gave cheers to Thor 3. But it also was like what could we do with four? We could do this and this. We were throwing ideas around. But also, just to work together again. That was one of the most enjoyable creative partnerships I've ever had."
Recently, Taika Waititi stated that he would very much be interested in directing a sequel to Ragnarok, as he feels like the franchise now has the ability to properly add another chapter for the character since it has been reenergized. And for Taika, a fourth Thor film would feel more like a second Ragnarok film.
-
"For sure I'd do another one because it wouldn't even feel like doing a fourth Thor film, it would just feel like doing the second Ragnarok film. Cuz it does feel like in a way, yeah there's been this reinvention in an exciting way... So it's exciting cuz it feel like, if Chris were to do this again it wouldn't feel like 'Oh it's the eighth time I've done Thor,' no it will feel like the second or third time I've done this character. Same with Mark [Ruffalo]."
While we will have to wait until Avengers 4 to see Thor's fate, this news is certainly a good indication that he may survive the war against Thanos. Hemsworth recently finished filming for Avengers 4 and added that a sequel to Ragnarok would depend on how the fourth Avengers film wraps up and edits the stories for its various characters, noting that Thor 4 would be a conversation for the future if it were to even happen at all.
Be sure to share your thoughts below about this news and whether you would be excited for a fourth Thor film with Taika Waititi returning to direct.
