THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER Star Chris Hemsworth Believes Marvel Movies Can Bring People Back To Theaters

While it's beginning to look like theaters will indeed be able to re-open their doors in 2020, there's some doubt about whether moviegoers will return to them. Chris Hemsworth, however, has some ideas...

While it does seem as if there's light at the end of the tunnel with the COVID-19 pandemic, it's impossible to say when movie theaters will be able to operate as normal. The hope is that they could re-open their doors by the end of the summer, but that could be easier said than done, especially when there's thought to be a risk of a second peak of infections.

With Warner Bros. holding on to tentpole-movies like TENET and Wonder Woman 1984 and Disney banking on the likes of Mulan and Black Widow, there are certainly some compelling reasons for film fans to return to multiplexes. Whether they will is another matter, but Thor: Love and Thunder star Chris Hemsworth reckons Marvel movies will bring people back.

"I hear those concerns, too," he started when asked by Inquirer about how superhero movies dominate theaters. "That [the MCU] takes up so much real estate, [and] is there enough room for the other things to exist, the art house films and the smaller films we love and admire equally."

"Films [like Marvel] that you can best appreciate on the big screen, those will draw people out of their homes again," the Australian actor said of the current crisis. "I’m with you on that."

It's a valid argument, but the box office is bound to suffer for a while thanks to the global pandemic. Until a vaccine is found, many people won't feel safe sitting in any crowded areas, so if nothing else, you have to believe that the release window between theatrical and Digital releases will be shortened.

What do you guys think?

I think it will be tough on theaters when they first open because there arent going to be movies. If I owned a theater I would show second-run movies for half off just to get people used to coming back. Heck, through infinity war and endgame in there, some the awards nominees, and other popular movie - both big budget and indie releases.

I agree that the tentpole movies is what's gonna bring back people into the seats, but I guess that won't happen until after the summer

I am binge watching the MCU on Disney plus. Drive in theaters are opening up with movies that are available to stream. I do not foresee going to a theater or a drive in until a vaccine is available. I bought a 20 foot inflatable screen and projector for back yard movies/tv, so I am good to go.

I’m left thinking that films are going to be evolving in this next decade and we’ll likely see the end of the dominance of the Super-hero film... in favor of what, I have no idea.

I think that 9/11 had a role to play in the rise of the superhero film to such prominence, with Spider-man being perfectly timed to follow it. A significant audience watched helplessly on live television as towers full of trapped people gradually collapsed in flames, and the fantasy of there being individuals who could have rescued them, or heroes who could physically fight the kinds of madmen that would do this, is both comforting and rousing.

But we’ve reached a point where the current trendsetting generation will have little or no personal memory of 9/11. Instead, the most significant cultural impact they will have experienced is this virus and the lockdown... a threat that hero fantasies don’t really address in any meaningful way. It’s going to be interesting to see the cultural fallout from this.

@Chewtoy - Well comic books are a very diverse medium, so they can adapt. I think the movies have become a little bit smarter. It seems like the villain that is just inexplicably evil and crazy died out, and we're seeing the movies tackle societal problems. We've seen it in a few MCU films but we've also got stuff like Joker, The Boys and Watchmen.

Superhero films may still provide the escapism people crave for after this as well. But I definitely see your point.

@Chewtoy - Modern superhero flicks are just new action movies. I don't think they'll go anywhere, just evolve in a new direction.

@Necropolitan - @SnapperCarr -

I don't think that they're going anywhere either... they're a wider genre than, say "Westerns". But I do expect that we've seen the height of their popularity by now.

As much as I love the theater, as a man living with an autoimmune disease, I ain't going nowhere for any movie.

People are going to go back no matter what movies are playing, the only other option would be for people to stay at home and stream which people are already sick. Most people want normal life back, people feel like they're in jail, in a comfortable home or not.....jail is jail.

They haven't gotten me back in two years to the cinemas. I just find they are a lot of better stuff on tv today. They'll get me back in there for Dune, and the Avatar sequels. Marvel needs to shake up the formula a bit.
