Taika Waititi Explains Apparent Continuity Error Between THOR: RAGNAROK And GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY

Guardians of the Galaxy introduced us to the sinister looking Sakaarians but Thor: Ragnarok provided a far more colourful take on the planet's inhabitants. So, what's the deal with that change?

If you've been fretting over a continuity issue between Guardians of the Galaxy and Thor: Ragnarok over the past few weeks, then fear not as you may finally have an explanation courtesy of director Taika Waititi. As you may recall, the Sakaarians in the 2014 release from James Gunn looked an awful lot different to the colourful inhabitants populating The Grandmaster's planet in the Marvel threequel.

Asked on Twitter why they're so different in appearance, Waititi responded: "As every true Marvel fan knows, Sakaarians wear reversible clothes. Grey, rugged, and scary on one side, colourful, festive, and flamboyant on the other!" The filmmaker is obviously making a tongue in cheek comment here but it's easy enough to figure out why there was such a difference between the two lots of aliens.

It could be that the Sakaarians in Guardians of the Galaxy were some sort of warrior race that left the planet as guns for hire, for example, so it's probably best not to worry too much about this continuity "error." Throw in the fact that Marvel probably didn't know they were going to make Thor: Ragnarok when that movie was being developed and this really isn't that big of a deal. What do you think?

I had thoght on that, but I imagine they are natives, and the people we see in Ragnarok are just people who got there.

Oh Taika you lovely man. On a side note, as much as I love the director, I cautious if he actually does the Akira movie. Idk, that is really really serious, with free jokes. But then again every movie he's done I've loved! Aside from Eagle vs Shark lol

It's pretty clear that most of the spectators and party people in the Grandmaster's arena were either cosmic tourists or refugees who were dumped on Sakaar via the Devil's Anus. Who knows where all of the anuses and other sphincters there started on their other ends? As Valkyrie said, Sakaar is pretty much on the other side of the universe from Assburg. Maybe it's a destination vacation spot for outsiders, while the native Sakaarans leave to become mercenaries across the cosmos.

I mean, in the movie universe, Sakaarans are basically a bunch of difference races stuck together through wormholes. It is not that hard to imagine they have different cultures, including the Sakaarans from GOTG.

Easily explained. Sakaarans in GotG are the natives who were displaced once a bunch of people started popping up through the wormholes.

@comics4life - big difference between continuity errors regarding henchman that aren't even named in one movie and major storyline continuity errors.
