Taika Waititi On The "Wacky" Humor Of THOR: RAGNAROK

The What We Do In The Shadows director speaks about the specific brand of humor he plans on bringing to Marvel's Thor threequel, and also confirms that the movie will shoot down under this year.

There are quite a few fans that aren't partial to the comedic elements Marvel tends to inject into their movies, but from the sounds of things Thor: Ragnarok is not going to break tradition in that regard - though we can probably expect slightly a different brand of humor, at least.

Star Mark Ruffalo (Hulk/Bruce Banner) has already compared the threequel to classic '80s buddy comedy Midnight Run, and when Collider mentioned this to Taika Waititi in a new interview, the What We Do In The Shadows director elaborated on his plans to being his own brand of humor to the MCU and gives the hilarious Hulk/Loki scene from Avengers a mention while he's at it.

"I love that one moment in Avengers when Hulk grabs Loki and rag dolls him. It lends itself to great humor, do you read those comic books? They’re wacky. They’re crazy. I think that‘s exactly what they need, to keep changing it up. They’ve got their dark films, some are more serious, and I think it’s great that they’re mixing it up. I really want to inject my style of humor into this."

When asked if he's been studying past Marvel flicks in order to ensure he's able to bring something fresh to the table, Waititi commends the studio on managing to exceed expectations by constantly evolving and changing things up to come up with the best story.

I’ve learned that there are really no rules. There’s no road map. They’re very similar to Pixar in that way. They are constantly looking for the best story, they’ll tear everything down to rebuild it to make sure they have the best story. That’s why Marvel is good they keep pushing and pushing and trying to get the best thing possible. That’s what I’ve discovered the way things have changed.

Though some would argue that Marvel still sticks to a pretty rigid formula in many ways, it's impossible to argue with their success, and it sounds like they're giving Waititi plenty of room to develop his own vision, at least.

The director also confirms that Thor: Ragnarok will shoot "sometime this year" in Australia. More at the link below.

Soooo....they haven't learned anything from TDW or AoU. C'mon, Marvel...I'm on your side, but the humor sometimes gets to be a bit out of hand.

As long as the humor works, I'm okay with Ragnarok being a little funnier. Personally though I was hoping for more of a serious tone for this one..

@ALegendaryPanda - The way he and Hemsworth and Ruffalo talk about it, it sounds like humor is the prominent feature. "they’ll tear everything down to rebuild it to make sure they have the best story." This makes me think they actually aren't doing Ragnarok anymore, but instead they might be going for either a completely original story or even Planet Hulk, but with Thor.

I'd be more worried if it wasn't Taika Waititi. He's a strong director and storyteller.

Although, if you're expecting the comic books you might be disappointed. They haven't really adapted any comic storylines as of yet.

We have the comics forever. We can read them any time we want and on top of that, we have the dceu and mcu trying to give us something similar in spirit but ultimately different. I'm excited.

Definition of Ragnarok. : the final destruction of the world in the conflict between the Aesir and the powers of Hel led by Loki —called also Twilight of the Gods.

Humor is fine. Brings needed levity to a grand adventure that can get overly serious. Superheroes should have an air of fun to them. That being said, THIS IS THE END OF ALL THINGS. The humor is fine if it makes sense and their isn't an EXCESS of it. LOTR had humor, but it never OVERSHADOWED the overall DARK TONE of the film. Same with Game of Thrones. Mirror that kind of humor and we're good. Black comedy might work better. Something very subtle.

@ComicsBornAndBred - I don't think they are doing Ragnarok anymore. "they’ll tear everything down to rebuild it to make sure they have the best story."

It begins filming in July/August. Same time as Spider-Man. They want it to be done before Infinity War starts filming in November. It won't surprise me if Black Phanter begins production before IW as well.

"They've got their dark films, some are more serious"

What movie is he talking about besides Winter Soldier ? Because for Phase 2 that's the only serious film there was and it was the best one.

There's no mixing it up when he's about to do the same as the other ones.

Dammit Marvel !!!

Yeah, I'm betting we'll be hearing about a title change soon. Doesn't sound like this is going to be Ragnarok anymore.

Those are some very strong hints that they aren't going with the Ragnarok storyline anymore. "[W]acky... humor"; "tear everything down"? Yeah, Waititi came in with a different pitch and they decided to run with that. This ain't going to be Ragnarok. It'll be something else entirely.

@DerekLake - Enchantress, Executioner, Beta Ray Bill. These would suit a Ragnarok story well (as long the first 2 are established in this universe)
Hulk doesn't need to be there for Ragnarok. This is no longer Ragnarok, this is Frog-Thor movie.

But nobody was hearing it back then.

I'm all for humor in Thor if it's a bit more dry than the slapstick style that was in Thor 2 with Darcy and Erik, in the Iron Man films and some Avengers. There can even be more humor if its done appropriately and doesn't take you out of the moment.

Taika seems to have a good knack for that so I'm all good here
