THOR: RAGNAROK Star Tessa Thompson Clarifies Recent Comments About Valkyrie's Sexuality

Tessa Thompson recently made headlines when she revealed that Thor: Ragnarok's Valkyrie is portrayed as being bisexual but the Westworld actress has now taken to social media to clarify those comments...

Earlier this week, Tessa Thompson generated a lot of headlines when she appeared to reveal that Thor: Ragnarok's Valkyrie is bisexual. That's how the character has always been portrayed in the comic books so the news wasn't exactly surprising but a lot of fans got understandably excited about seeing the first major LGBT character in a Marvel Studios movie. However, you may want to temper expectations.
As you can see below, the actress has taken to Twitter to confirm that while she is portraying Valkyrie as bisexual, that's never directly addressed in Thor: Ragnarok (there's actually no real hint of romance at all in the threequel). This is disappointing but the door is open to change that down the line.

Marvel has yet to introduce an openly gay character in one of their movies and it's hard to say when and where that could change. Black Panther is a possibility but with Avengers: Infinity War featuring mostly pre-existing heroes and villains, it's hard to imagine any of them coming out of the closet at this point. What do you guys think? As always, be sure to let us know your thoughts in the usual place.

I din't think not addressing sexuality (whatever it is) in a CBM is necessarily disappointing.

If it serves the story, makes sense. If not, why force it?

@Chameleon - They tease it in the film? Like they teased it in Beauty and the Beast? Interesting. I guess that's as far as Disney is willing to go right now.

@Chameleon - yeah it was briefly hinted

@BeyondtheFuture - * Slight spoilers but not really* Yeah two moments, one hinting towards something that Hela did that Valkyrie "Doesn't want to talk about" then a flashback of Hela fighting the Valkyries and one of them dying in Tessa Thompsons arms (LIkely her GF), that's as far as they go with it

Surely this is a more truthful depiction. People don't go around shouting about their sexuality all the time. It's be jarring if in the middle of a scene she just came out with "Hey, I'm bisexual".

@SiegFirebrand - I am happy Valkyrie is LGBT. But why draw attention to fact she is the first LGBT character if nothing hints at it in the film?
I agree having her say "I am bisexual" randomly isn't organic to a scene, but atleast having her flirt with a female character would show she is LGBT.
I fail to see how she "played her as Bisexual" if she doesn't show sexual interest in women or men in the film.
There is no inherent bisexual behaviour to act.

PG-13 movie won't get 2 girls kissing in it. At the most we will get Thor with his shirt off,and maybe Loki showing his nude backside.

If she's already bi in the comics then it's ok, right guys?
Nobody's gonna cry that they are forcing any agenda on us, right?
GAThrawnIGF
GAThrawnIGF - 10/26/2017, 6:57 AM
@Jaspion - It is when the actress explicitly states that the character is LGBT in the movie but then the next week comes out and says the movie never shows us that fact. Publicity stunt, anyone?
Jaspion
Jaspion - 10/26/2017, 10:14 AM
@GAThrawnIGF - well, the character IS Lgbt. What do they have to show?
That's like stating that Thor is straight but then he never kisses a girl. Would people be mad then?

Everybody just assumes everyone is straight. If not, they must prove.

MrMasculinity - 10/26/2017, 12:31 PM
@Jaspion - how about each person that watches the movie assumes the characters are all bi?

That is, if they have a desperate need to see that in a movie that is about alien gods, gamma irradiated giants, crazyness and targeted at a broader audience? It’s pretty much everywhere in media now, it’s not like there’s a lack of exposure.

Maybe leave it to the eye of the beholder, if they really are that bothered about which way a character swings?
Jaspion
Jaspion - 10/26/2017, 12:47 PM
@ToxMasculinity - isn't that the way it already works? I mean, there are people that see Cap and Bucky as a couple. Who knows?
But in this case an actress is saying a character that is bi in the comics is bi in the movie. Maybe just to appeal to Lgbt? Yes, but these people wanna be represented, even if not explicitly in the movie, but just knowing that the character is one of them might be enough.
MrMasculinity
MrMasculinity - 10/26/2017, 1:06 PM
@Jaspion - like you said, some people already see Cap and Bucky as a couple. I don’t, but that’s me. My choice of interpretation.

And sure, I understand some people want representation, but let’s not kid ourselves and pretend there isn’t enough... if it’s supposed to be REALISTIC representation, we’re talking no more than 6% of the whole population. In the US that is. Taking into consideration the rest of the world... way, way, way less.

And let’s not forget, it’s great for the very small minirity that wants representation, but what about the silent majority that doesn’t really care or want a political agenda shoved down their throats? And it’s silent because if you complain... you’re a misogynist. Or sexist. Or homophobe. Pick one. It’s how arguments are supressed. Name calling, shaming, trying to make a person feel guilty of their own orientation.

You didn’t see a lot of people complaining of 3/4 gay sex scenes in a row in Sens8. I didn’t. Just skipped it.

Maybe, being neutral and generic, and leaving it to the viewer to identify with the characters in whatever way they prefer is a reasonable middle-ground?

And if you say it’s to “make up for years of repression”. Well, honestly not my problem. I wasn’t there. I didn’t do it. And I won’t ve held accountable and pay for the actions of others.

And listen, I’m not trying to atrack you, just to shed some light as to why most people are starting to get fed up with it.

@Jaspion - I agree with you in regards to baiting though. I’m a Marvel fan (comics in genera but lean towards Marvel more), but yes, it wasn’t a great move.

Not sure if she wasn’t trying to promote herself though, or just trolling.

@GAThrawnIGF - "It is when the actress explicitly states that the character is LGBT in the movie but then the next week comes out and says the movie never shows us that fact. Publicity stunt, anyone?
Except she never did state that. She said the character is bi in the comics and she tried to play as she wear bi. Whatever that means.
So, no "publicity stunt" imo, just answering another tweet.
