During the SDCC 16 people saw a glimpse of art that appeared to confirm the eternals are debuting in THOR: RAGNAROK, but who are the eternals?

HISTORY OF THE ETERNALS IN THE COMICS

When the celestials first came to earth they immediately started experimenting and created three offshoots of humanity named the deviants, the mutants and the eternals. While the deviants were a twisted, cruel, deformed race and the mutant gene was latent for millenia the Eternals swiftly ascended to godhood, becoming basically immortal and nearly as powerful as earth's native pantheons such as the Aesir and Olympians.
Civil war soon broke out among the eternals with the two sides being led by kronos and Ouranos, Kronos side was victorious and banished Ouranos into space ushering in an age of peace but unfortunately Kronos ended up dying during an experiment and becoming one with the universe. After Kronos "died" it was decided his son Zuras would rule olympia (the home of the eternals) while his other son A'lars would leave and go rule the planet Titan where he would eventually sire Thanos.
Zuras and his kin were mistaken for gods by humanity and for this reason soon drew the ire of the gods of earth especially the olympians as the eternals were mistaken for them most of the time. The olympians and eternals fought with each other but the battle soon ended in a truce with the eternals agreeing to act as the olympians representitives on earth and Zuras daughter renamed herself Thena.

SO WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR ETERNALS IN THE MCU?

After reading the history of the eternals (you better have!) it is quite clear the eternals are based almost entirely on the olympians, if you look up an image of zuras and an image of marvel zeus they both look almost identicle! So, it seems entirely logical that the Eternals will be one in the same as the greek gods in the MCU. There are many reasons for marvel to do this such as...

  1. Since Asgardians have already been shown it stands to reason the greek gods should also be in the MCU.
  2. The eternals are basically the greek gods just with a more scientific back ground, thus making them perfect for the mcu.
  3. it would give even more epic characters to fight thanos in infinity war.
  4. Marvel could introduce basically its own greek gods/new gods before DC gets to showcase them fully.
If you are still skeptical that marvel would mix the eternals and olympians into one race let us look at how similar they are already in comics.

OLYMPIANS                               ETERNALS

Home: Olympus                         Olympia

Zeus                                              Zuras
Athena                                         Thena
Mercury                                       Makkari
Hercules                                      Gilgamesh
Hephaestus                                 Phastos

these eternals were all mistaken for the greek gods in marvel comics.

CONCLUSION

The MCU has made some big changes to characters before so it would not be surprising for this to happen and it is in fact very likely as the people at the MCU love putting their own unique sciency spin on this stuff, and making the eternal one in the same as the olympians seems like a no brainer.

That would actually be pretty cool to see them appearing. Especially if thet are going to help fight thanos in the end

@malsemarcel - indeed, it would also be cool to see Zeus/zuras vs thor and hulk in THOR: RAGNAROK as they have fought in the comics before.

With the advent of Wonder Woman the DCEU now has a large stake in Greek/Roman mythology that the MCU does not have. Frankly I can't see the MCU going into that direction at all. So the Eternals if they appear at all will imo be renamed and will of some other derivation.

@JDL - would that not be a good reason for the MCU to do this? The WW movie does not look to have many greek gods, so if the mcu introduced the eternals/Olympians first they might get in on the action first and perhaps even show up DC's new gods.

@ASGARDIANBRONY - The DCEU has already gone that route to some extent abd Marvel does not want to be seen as copying* anyone much less DC.

*yes a LOT of copying has gone on in the comics. DC and Marvel seem to actively trying to avoid that in the movies.

@JDL - it wouldn't be copying if marvel did it better first, plus with the asgardians introduced marvel has got to show off the Olympians sometime.
