'THOR' Star Chris Hemsworth Conveys His Thoughts On Current Day MCU, & How It Can Change.

It is no secret fans alike have noticed the shift in Marvel Studios quality and storytelling of their newly releasing films, additionally, this change has been noticed by one of the fathers of the shared universe, Chris Hemsworth. Best known for playing the God of Thunder 'Thor' for the past 12 years as of 2023, no doubt Hemsworth has bared witness to the differences the MCU strikes now, from its former glory days in the early 2010's.

The actor has starred in 9 movies within the Marvel Cinematic Universe since his characters debut, which in turn would of course open his eyes to the profound shifts the universe would take. It is safe to claim that the current Marvel Cinematic Universe landscape differs quite drastically when comparing it to its earlier days -- Marvel was still attempting to find their footing with telling these stories about the now, biggest superheroes.

In a recent interview with GQ, Chris Hemsworth shared his own insight on what he believes could bring the MCU back to their former days of superhero storytelling. The answer, according to Hemsworth, is a quite simple fix for the universe, which is to focus on the standalone characters personal and emotional journeys, rather than tell a story about a cataclysmic Avengers-level threat:

That's the trick: you have to separate all those stories. The moment it's like, 'Your world is in danger, the entire universe!' It's like, 'Yeah, so [it] was the last 24 films.' It has to become a bit more personal and grounded. - Chris Hemsowrth, GQ

Seemingly newer Marvel projects deal with stories which can bring about the end of the world, ie; Shang-Chi (The Destroyer), Spider-Man: No Way Home (The end of the multiverse), Ant-Man & The Wasp (Kang The Conqueror goes without saying...).

The stakes of these movies are surely elevated to great extremities and provide cool moments for viewers to enjoy, but Hemsworth believes that after seeng the exact same format in the current day MCU, Marvel should consider telling more simple character driven stories, rather than high stakes, end of the world craziness.

Civil War is probably still to this day my favourite MCU project. The stakes of that movie and what the last fight meant for the characters and us the audience can tell you why that is.

Shang Chi was heading in a decent direction until a big soul-sucking dragon showed up and killed the interesting baddie. There is a place and time for soul-sucking dragons, but that wasn't it.

You will never be able to convince me that the world is ending, because I know you will never go that far, so why even try? The most you can do is leave me unable to predict how the apocalypse is going to be cancelled, but even then I know that it still will be cancelled.

That's both the strength and weakness of Infinity War. It was nice to see the heroes lose, but the snap didn't hit as deeply as it could have because we knew that wasn't an irreversible ending. Regardless of that, it worked overall because Thanos worked, and because the story committed to him and him alone right to the end.

Fellow Geeksters IMO the MCU has let the LGBTQ basically write their projects and this has turned MANY MANY fans off. Instead of telling a great story, they must FIRST check all boxes to make the political factions happy Which leaves NO room for a Great MCU Movie. Use GOTG 3 as a template moving forward. It was just a great movie with no LGBTQ or Diversity angles

@JohnShaft -

If that's what you think MCU needs to fix it's problem then I sincerely hope you seek help.

That has nothing to do with MCU problems.

Their problem is just too much content, some special effects being bad and the films leaning more on humor that doesn't land😑

Seems to have his head in the right place I'm willing to see Chris do many Thor films as long as the writing for yhr character is STRONG. They could easily fix tons of errors in L&T with thr inclusion of skrulls impersonating characters that acted...questionable.

Told ya for the last few years the MCU has gone to shit, let's get back to what made phase 1-3 so good.

@marvel72 - Shooot, even Phase 2 was rocky. Infact, each phase has had its duds.

Phase 1: Iron Man 2

Phase 2: Iron Man 3, Age of Ultron, Thor 2

Phase 3: Ant-Man and the Wasp,

@TheRationalNerd - I'm in agreement with you. I think Phase Four gets a pretty bad press unfairly when you compare it to Phase One (which Phase Four is in many ways). There was just more content so more average stuff. Apart from Ironman 1 and The Avengers (Assemble) in that first phase, the other films all had issues (some worse than others). Don't get me wrong - I loved that first phase and the promise it brought but I still recognised that not all of it was first rate.

And for me - the main complaint I have with phase four - is that too much Disney+ stuff was rushed before it was ready. And I think the pandemic played a big part in that. In fact the only piece of phase four that I felt was downright, unforgivably awful was Thor: Love & Thunder which I hold Taika Waititi responsible for. He obviously had no love for the characters, no longer cared about them. Was more interested in making fun of them and when one of your storylines is someone dealing with terminal cancer the lack of heart the film had was pretty shameful.

I also think the 'low stakes' argument Hemsworth makes ties into this as well. If you focus on the characters and make us care about them then they don't need to save the world/universe/multi-verse. They just need to save themselves (from themselves usually) and it matters to a movie going public.
