Aside from some set photos showing Natalie Portman's Jane Foster approaching the shattered remains of Mjolnir on a shrine in New Asgard, we know very little about her transformation into the Mighty Thor in Thor: Love and Thunder. Something clearly happens when Jane gets near the God of Thunder's old hammer, but we're anticipating some changes when this story is translated to screen.

Fans of Jason Aaron's Thor run will know that Jane had cancer when she gained Thor's powers, and while becoming a Thunder God made her healthy, the transformations hastened the disease's spread. Now, the description for a replica helmet confirms that the MCU's Jane will also have cancer.

"Suffering from cancer, astrophysicist and Thor’s ex-girlfriend, Jane Foster, visited New Asgard and her life was changed forever," reads these new Thor: Love and Thunder details shared on Eaglemoss' website. "Mysteriously, the broken pieces of Mjolnir, the hammer of the thunder god, transformed her into the Mighty Thor and gifted her the superpowers of Thor, to battle threats internal and external. Wielding Mjolnir herself, she had become a godly protector and a new hero was born!"

"With the help of Thor, Valkyrie, and the Guardians of the Galaxy, the Mighty Thor was faced by the powerful Gorr, the God Butcher. With divine powers himself, Gorr was driven to rid the universe of gods wherever he found them," it continues. "Battling cancer in her human form and Gorr in her godly form, Jane Foster was embroiled in an epic struggle with plenty of love and thunder!"

There's a fair bit to unpack there, though much of what's said confirms the many theories surrounding the Thor: Ragnarok sequel. Jane having cancer could be what brings her to New Asgard; while it's possible she'll be looking for a cure, something tells us she's there to say goodbye to her old flame.

Hopefully, the Mighty Thor does have a future in the MCU beyond this movie because the character has a tonne of potential. Her comic book counterpart even becomes romantically involved with Captain America (Sam Wilson), and that's a relationship we'd definitely like to see play out on the big screen.

Thor: Love and Thunder arrives in theaters on July 8.

We… we already knew 95% of this, right?

@WruceBayne - I was worried marvel would scratch the cancer stuff cause they don't like to deal with difficult topics

@Crtdacct2say - I know they barely touched on the devil in a bottle Subject. But can you give other examples?

@Waddles - Taika can pull it off. There were some really good emotional beats in Ragnarok despite it's goofy facade. And if you've seen JoJo Rabbit you know he can really knock it out the park with the gut punches. Jane having cancer, and ultimately using the power of Thor to defend people and die from it, would be the most insanely emotional gut punch. And honestly, the MCU needs some more dramatic stuff to happen.

So are there 2 Mjolnirs in the present day? The broken one and the one Thor brought back from the past?

@CplHicks - I just went back to check, and Captain America does go back in time with Mjolnir when he returns the stones at the end of Endgame, so right now the only one there is is the broken one.

@CplHicks - Steve took the one from 2013 back to 2013.

Never been so happy to hear someone has cancer! It's such a big part of her arc and I really hope they do it justice. It adds such nuance to get power

I wonder if they'll follow along the detail where when she uses mjolnir it completely undoes all her chemo progress or not.

@BritishMonkey - I think that’s the foundation of her journey. Being Thor is killing her but so is the cancer; albeit much slower. Hope they keep it.

I'd be really surprised if new asgard could not cure Jane

Soooooooo glad they are keeping the cancer plot.

Hopefully it will be handled with care, i trust Taika.

My wife having only gotten into mcu because of me, and not knowing anything about the comics, rolls her eyes anytime there's a variant version of a hero. Examples being miles morales, female Thor, female Hulk, female hawkeye, and to an extent falcon as cap America.

After watching falcon and winter soldier and seeing hawkeye, she is totally on board with the new characters. But without knowing more, from the surface these "2nd tier versions of the originals" appear to just be copycats.

I say this to add that she too didn't find the idea of a female Thor alluring. I'm saving the cancer plot for her to find out while watching the movie. She is such a softie and I know that will have her understand why this story is so popular!

@Vigor - They might have the knowledge or those who has it didn't catch the boat. Add to that there is no chance that the tech required escaped with them in the way of machines. Trying to get all that back would take a human lifetime.

I wanted to see a movie about Thor. This seems to be about him finding himself again for like the 5th time, yawn. I'm not interested in Lady Thor at all, it sounds so silly and redundant. And what about Sif, what the hell happened to her? She would be more appropriate to have the hammer if the rich white people running Marvel and Disney absolutely feel they have to push Thor aside for inclusion sake.

Thinking of cancer and the ones I loved that are longer on Earth just makes me feel sad and I'm not excited about watching that in a fantasy movie I would be watching for escapism and entertainment reasons.

@WarMonkey - That's a whole lot of opinions you have there. You aren't interested fair enough. But a lot of us are. And if you actually read the Mighty Thor story arcs if was one of the best runs for a new character.
WarMonkey

@SonOfAGif - Why would I be interested in a replacement character for the one I like? I also never liked the Donald Blake angle either. I want to see Thor and Asgardians. I'm simple like that.

Just cause I think something is dumb and uninteresting doesn't mean you have to. I bet I love some movies you don't, such as I love ALL the Michael Bay Transformer movies, I find many things things in them to enjoy. I do this knowing objectively they aren't well constructed stories or characters.

@WarMonkey - And that's the beauty of opinions and different points of view. You dislike something someone else likes. Neither of you or myself have the right to stop the other person from changing their opinion. You stated you wanted to see a movie about "Thor". Thor was very very much in the trailer and it's his movie. I think your issue is more with which Thor storyline they are adapting. Which is totally fair. But that doesn't negate someone else from loving the source material it was pulled from.

I’m sorry, but I have to skip this movie. My father died from cancer two years ago and I don’t want to relive it through this movie.
