AMC Officially Announces Trilogy Of RICK GRIMES Movies As THE WALKING DEAD Universe Expansion Begins

We heard rumblings last night that Andrew Lincoln may reprise the role of Rick Grimes in a movie but AMC has now confirmed that a trilogy is the works as the network begins an expansion of the franchise.

Last night, Andrew Lincoln bid farewell to The Walking Dead...for now. AMC Studios has officially announced that a series of original films starring the British actor are in the works which will see him reprise the role of Rick Grimes. Chief Content Officer Scott M. Gimple is writing the trilogy, while production is expected to begin as soon as next year.

Lincoln describes it as "the end of the beginning" and it sounds like the scope of these movies which will continue the character's story are going to have a much wider scope than the TV show.

"I like the idea that we get to tell a bigger story, maybe with a sort of wider vista. And I’ve always been interested in what’s going on out there, you know, whether or not there is contact with the wider world. I want to know the meta of it all. And I suppose to be able to kind of touch upon that in a contained story for me is a very exciting proposition. Maybe it’s the start of a bigger story."

AMC and Gimple reportedly has a multi-year plan for The Walking Dead Universe and there are a number of projects in development, including more movies, specials, TV shows, and digital content. How many of those will become a reality after ratings for season nine have plummeted is obviously hard to say as of right now. Here's what Gimple has to say about what's next:

"We have a lot on the horizon – starting with a new epic featuring one of the greatest leading actors in television history and one of the best people I’ve ever met. These films are going to be big evolutions of what we’ve been doing on the show, with the scope and scale of features. We’re starting with the first part of the continuing story of Rick Grimes, and there is much more on the way, featuring yet-unseen worlds of The Walking Dead and faces from the show’s past, as well as new characters we hope to become favorites, told by TWD veterans and emerging voices. We want to break new ground with different, distinct stories, all part of the same world that’s captured our imagination for nearly a decade of the Dead."

Deadline confirms that the plan is for the first Rick Grimes movie to explore where he was taken on that helicopter and to focus on what he faces in a "new corner of the zombie apocalypse."Are you guys excited to see what the future holds in store for The Walking Dead Universe? Sound off below.

I really feel like they missed an opportunity for Rick to literally jump over a shark on waterskis as he left, because that episode wasn't quite insulting enough to my intelligence.

What about all the walkers rotting. Most of them should be skeletons or puddles by now.

@SpacePants - There are not enough people to make that much of a threat. Most of the walkers are from before the outbreak thus millions of walkers. If they rot and new people die that's only thousands, possibly hundreds. So after the previous walkers rot, there are only a few left.

And what if humans put measures to stop people from turning, like shooting themselves in the head or severing the heads of their dead. After all is said and done you might have a few dozen walkers who are easy to kill.

So by the end of the series, as years goes on, the only threat is the possibility of walkers and no way would anyone allow an outbreak.

Its a zombie show, not much you can do with it, either it will get really boring because there isn't enough zombies, like the show did in season 2. Or its going to get really repetitive like the show got after the prison was destroyed. Seriously its just normal people in a zombie apocalypse, not much variety in that drama, do we really need a second show and a trilogy of tv movies to expand this universe. The only difference will be the setting.

@dracula - I honestly think they should just make their own zombie show or something. With the comics based off them, the walkers stay the same. I'm saying making some sort of super induced evolved zombi, hello no to that, but at least make a more interesting world, like world war z (the book) Expand a movie off that.

@MadameCipher - Really I think the shows biggest problem is that is tries to follow the comic to much. A show comes out quicker than a comic, so they get through material quickly and then they need to fill up time with repetitive stuff, and you pretty much know how most stuff is going to end. Look at DC and Marvel's shows, they take the characters, and take inspiration from stories, but for the most part tell their own stories. Isn't that why the original show runner was fired, he had plans for the show that the studio didn't want to go with, which was going to stray from the comics

@dracula - The one zombie show/movie I've been wanting to see that could shake up the formula is one where the LDS Church carves out a very orderly and repressive society in the American west, with a heavy religious apocalyptic overtones. And then (here's the gimmick), they come into conflict with the surviving fleet of Scientologists from the Sea Org, who have created their own wacky end-times Waterworld-y madness.

And the show revolves around ordinary people trying to navigate these two religious movements that have been thrust into central roles in humanity's remaining societies.

@Spock0Clock - As someone that was raised LDS I am interested in this. As long as it doesn't have the tropes associated with the RLDS (break off with Joseph Smith's son after he died) such as polygamy since the LDS church stopped that when applying for Utah's statehood

Soooo...will these be TV movies, or direct to DVD? And why not just kill him and Maggie off? But if Andrew Lincoln still wants to keep playing Rick, then good for him. "CARL"!!!!!

You know what, at least they decided to act now. I’d rather see AMC take this big risk and try to expand and recaptivate the audience than continue to simply spit out mediocre seasons as the audience leaves.
They didn’t want to take the Smallville route.

why would you start expanding a universe when the ratings have dipped to all time lows?

IDC IDC IDC I love it! I'll be in the theaters, walking dead shirt and all. This is for the fans that still watch and love the characters. They may make a really great trilogy and put naysayers in their quiet corner.

Tons of shit shows people watch that I can't for the life of me bring myself to watch but to each their own.

I'm excited for what they're doing. Long live Rick Grimes!

Is this real?

Rick and Shane were the absolute best parts of this show. To me, it hasn't been good since Season 4ish.

I'd be ok with Lincoln leading an feature film of this. But please, don't give us forty different story lines of awful characters. Here is an example of one of those awful characters that ruined the show for me....

TWD has always had the most annoying, gawd-awful commercials.

Unless these supposed 'feature films' are commercial free, it will basically be a two-hour episode.

I loved the episode and thought it was a great send off. I was texting my brother how I can’t believe it’s finally over for Rick. And then there were still 2 minutes left to be seen and they show him alive and washed up on shore.... I was mad when they first announced he was leaving and I knew it was coming, but then the “death” happened and I was kind of ok with it. After I saw he lived, I felt cheated haha
