Josh Wilding Reviews: THE WALKING DEAD Season Three Premiere; "Seed"

Last year, The Walking Dead was criticised for being a little too slow-paced, but there's no need to worry about that in the superb season three premiere, "Seed". Hit the jump for my verdict! [WARNING: MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD]

The hunt for Sophia took up a lot of the second season of The Walking Dead, resulting in many fans feeling annoyed at what appeared to be a fairly slow thirteen episode run. Well, "Seed" more than makes up for the mostly dull time spent on Hershel's farm, and the new direction and tone that the series is heading in looks set to make this the best season yet. The "Ricktatorship" has truly begun, doing away with the lengthy discussions and arguments that our core cast of characters would usually have when it came to decision making. Now, it's Rick's way or the highway, and this (as well as the absence of Shane) makes him the leader that lovers of Robert Kirkman and Charlie Adlard's comic book series have been so desperate to see. A fair few months have passed since the season two finale, and despite the fact that this makes it a little hard to believe they've only just now found the Prison, it does help in offering an interesting new dynamic. It's shocking to see just how desperate the group have become, with Carl eagerly opening a tin of dog food before it's thrown a way by his clearly frustrated father.

All of the survivors are now far more adept at taking out the undead, and this too offers a fresh spin on things. With a slightly smaller cast, everyone gets a decent amount of time in the spotlight...T-Dog actually says more in this episode than he probably did in the entirety of season two! There is several different stages to the group taking over the Prison, all of which are thrilling and pretty damn frightening. Putting walkers in riot gear (thereby making them near impossible to kill) is a great idea, as is seeing Maggie work out how to take them down. The effects are also superb, with some VERY creative new zombie designs which are sure to be difficult to watch for the faint of heart! Director Ernest Dickerson (Dexter, The Wire) shoots the episode beautifully, and the scene in which Rick takes out the walkers from a watchtower with a rifle is a very iconic looking shot. The episode ends with a great couple of twists, and it was nice to see Rick's reaction to having to perform a grisly amputation - despite now being a hardened leader, he's still only human after all!

The final cliffhanger comes totally out of nowhere and the episode ends rather abruptly on this note, promising a very interesting lead into next week. How exactly they're going to handle this should be really very interesting, although whether we REALLY need additional cast members at this point (especially with the likes of Michonne and The Governor on the way) remains to be seen. Speaking of which, we finally get to meet Danai Gurira's Michonne in the premiere, and while we catch a glimpse of her two undead compatriots and quickly learn that she's developed a bond with Andrea, that's about all we do discover - she's not even named. Of course, it's likely that she will be fleshed out next week and as the season progresses, because anyone who isn't familiar with the comic books will surely be baffled at this point. Overall, this was a great start to season three, and while there are still a few worrying elements (the tension between Rick and Lori runs the risk of getting old fast), this really does look set to be the best year for The Walking Dead yet.

Season three of The Walking Dead has kicked off in style, reminding us that it's still one of THE best shows on TV. Stellar storytelling and a killer twist make this a superb hour of television. Bring on The Governor!

Clearly it's been some months well between season 2 & 3. The prologue to each episode will most likely fill us in on what went on between that time.
Also, when Michonne (or Andrea) said they'll be coming soon or something to that effect - doesn't anyone else get the feeling that it may have been the zombies, but it could just as well have been the Governor & his crew. Meaning that they've met up in Woodbury before. Anyone else get that feeling?

The best episode of Walking Dead so far. Really great pace, awesome action, the characters had better development and it was even funnier than it had ever been in the previous seasons. This premiere was perfect all-around, and if this episode wasn't enough proof, the performances this season are going to be incredible. I'm really excited that the show's back.

After a sub-par second season, that spent way too much time repeating the same lame storylines again-and-again, this premiere felt like a real breath of fresh air and a sign of great things to come.

I'm gonna have to disagree ror, arrow is good but we cant judge from only one episode. I love the walking dead comics but the first season of the tv show was not very good, good start to the third one though.

@Josh

I'm gonna have to chime in with everyone else, you were WAY too hard on Arrow. It was a bit early to be making some of the presumptions you made about that show. As a general rule, i'll watch 3 episodes of just about anything to give it a fair shake, but especially shows in the sci-fi/fantasy genre. Those shows generally don't come into their own until midway through the 1st season...

As always tho, I appreciate the articles...

Agreed, great ep, one of the best. But I must say all the negativity towards season 2 is totally undeserved. You NEED those "boring" moments of characaterization otherwise when someone does die it's meaningless to the audience. You can't have constant chaos and still expect to care about the characters. That's why TWD is awesome, it balances the story and the blood pretty evenly imo:)

Ha, Talontd me ol mucker, I didn't review the show, just the pilot, which I thought was very disappointing. But as I said in the review, I will keep watching to see if it improves. That being said I don't disagree with anything Josh says here..aside from the fact that I thought Amell might have been decent with a better script. His voice over was pathetic though. I've heard more passion in infomercials.

Great episode, but I agree with CCR. All action and no dialogue make for a boring story. Hopefully, it's well balanced out; season 2 was too much drama. Season 3 should be great!

I know its nit picky but it seems they tossed out some of the realism in the show. Sniping zombies with pistols just bothers me. Head shots at 50 yds against moving targets. And why not crush the skull of everything that remotely looks dead. After months of surviving they make mistakes they should have seen coming a mile away.

I know it is a fictional show but i watch and when someone dies I start to care less if it was because someone was stupid.

@ravennpilot

People do stupid things all the time. You just need to factor in that without people doing stupid, sometimes seemingly OVERly stupid things(in movies or tv), we would have a lot of boring horror/sci-fi to watch. I thought the same thing when Hershel veered off away from the group and then just nonchalantly stepped over a dead body that wasn't fully dead. But we need "stupid" decisions like this in horror or nobody would ever die, lol.

it just felt like there could have been a better set up. There will always be a oops moment but it should seem like some unavoidable accident.

Say what you will about Shane but when he shot Otis, you said Holy crap, not, o come on.

@CCR-I agree with ya man! I've said that to my wife on more than one occasion while watching a movie or series. "Why did they do THAT?" and then right after I follow it up with "Of course, if they HADN'T done THAT, then there'd be no movie!".

Season 3 premiere was [frick]ing amazing! When the tv series of TWD first started, I felt incredibly jaded because it veered away from the comics, quite a bit in fact. But, I had also JUST finished reading the entire series up to that point to the comic was still very fresh in my mind. Since then, since so much time has elapsed, I have grown to LOVE this series and actually am enjoying it much more than the comics. The last issue of the compilations, #16 I think, sucked big time. Boring as hell. Nothing happened.

In my opinion...I love this show, from beginning to end, every episode. Everybody (critics and the hopeful fans)seemed to focus on the pace, saying that it was to slow. I felt it fit perfect. It added to the realism of the show. This show makes me feel that IF...IF a an outbreak of this sort happens, that this would be how life would be in a sense. Life isnt like some gay michael bay/christopher nolan bang, bang, boom, shoot em up...This show and season 2 showed so much character development (aside from Tdog lol) and what life is...a waiting game. Hope the rest will be like that.

Great review, Josh!

It really was a perfect WD episode. The last four minutes felt like four hours!!!

I do wish hey had just set this at the onset of winter. But I'm sure their saving the winter for future seasons.

Finally, to hell with all those people who said you were too harsh on everything!

This episode set the bar for what T.V. should be! Arrow lowered the bar on what comic books and television can do...I won't get started on that again though, my comment on your Arrow review took a lot out of me...

Long live the Ricktatorship!

I was a bit bugged with the headshots as well and that now, aside from one stray bullet, everyone seems to be expert marksmen. You'd figure with the rate of everyone dying while we're watching someone should've kicked the bucket throughout the entire winter of nomadic life. And when did they learn about the bite infection getting stalled by amputation? I can't recall them doing it in the previous seasons off the back of my head, but I really don't remember much of them. I'd give it a 3.5/5. I miss the scarier feel of the first season.

Great review, and agreed. TWD is my favorite show going now and a wonderful start to what will be an awesome season.
The only thing that bugs me is seeing as how harsh winters get, how did they all manage to survive the winter? Nobody starved, got hypothermia or got bit? Maybe it was a mild one. Also, with Rick and Lori, you'd think after a couple of months they would've either made up or split up. Instead they've been holding on to this tension. It's all meaningless anyway, just kinda weird to me.
It would be funny to see a walker trying to catch someone in three feet of snow. Would they freeze solid if it got cold enough? Walkersickle.

@REDSTORM, "...and when did they learn about the bite infection getting stalled by amputation?"

Really sort of common sense. Think of it like a snake bite, you don't want the venom to spread cut off whatever got bit...or at least a tourniquet. I know that's extreme for a snake bite, just giving you an idea.
