Robert Kirkman Confirms That THE WALKING DEAD TV Series Will End Differently From The Comic

AMC's The Walking Dead is just about to enter its seventh season after the end of a pretty daring cliffhanger last April. While there's currently no end in sight for the hit drama, series creator Roert Kirkman has confirmed that when the show does end, the conclusion will be different from how he chooses to finish up his long-running comic series of the same name.

“I hope [when]the show ends, the comic keeps going,” Kirkman said in a preview of the season finale for AMC's Geeking Out. "The comic was the comic before the show, so I try to maintain that. I know how I'm going to end The Walking Dead [comic], so I can't tell anyone, because I don’t want it in the show before I get it in my comic! So if the show were to end at any point and the comic was still going, I would have to sit down with [showrunner] Scott [Gimple] and pretend I had no idea how to end it and work with him and try and come up with a new ending."

Continuing a story onscreen that hasn't yet been published is something that HBO's Game of Thrones has just recently done, as the material the show is currently tackling has not yet been released in book format by author George R.R. Martin. Kirkman was critical of this decision earlier this summer, saying “I would never do that. That’s the one thing I’m disappointed in George R.R. Martin for doing. He should have just been like, ‘F*ck you. You make it up now, I’ll get to mine when I’m ready.'” Kirkman later recanted his statements, saying “I was just joking about how I would have handled that situation. Love GOT, love GRRM.”
